Discovery Principles in the Attempted Sharing of Explicit Grammatical Knowledge

Although persona non grata during the heyday of the so called 'Communicative revolution' (CLT), grammar is once again becoming acceptable in the English language classroom. This paper outlines the rationale behind a fairly new approach to grammar, which seems to combine elements from both sides of the traditional inductive deductive dichotomy. It will be suggested that discovery principles bow to current cognitive views of second language learning by encouraging active participation rather than passive assimilation on the part of the learner.
