On functions of monolingual English dictionary in college English learning

After learning English in high school, undergraduates generally have possessed basic abilities to use a monolingual English dictionary. Our investigations show their rare use of the monolingual dictionary but excessive dependence on English-Chinese dictionary. Compared with an English-Chinese dictionary, a monolingual English dictionary provides precise definitions and shows the delicate differences among synonyms and words with similar meanings. The use of monolingual English dictionary contributes to users' precise comprehension and mastery of English and thinking in it. College students should be encouraged and guided to use the dictionary recommended.
