In 2001, the global ethylene dichloride (EDC) consumption amounted to about 34.33 million tons, with a production capacity about 45 million tons and the output, 34.33 million tons, respectively.Producing polyvinyl chloride(PVC), via vinyl chlorine monomer(VCM), is the primary end use for EDC, accounting for an estimated 95% of the world EDC consumption.The global demand is to increase at a 3.4% per year from 2001 to 2006.Asia (excluding Japan) will still have the highest EDC growth potential of 9% by 2004.The future growth of EDC consumption will depend on the demand for VCM and PVC.The PVC consumption is expected to grow and will become an increasing factor in the disposition of chlorine.
