Abstract:Objective: To find and confirm the endemic goiter was exist in Henan province and to study the prevalence points and prevention means, and then to observe the prevention effects. Methods:We inquiry the concentration of drinking water in Puyang for finding the endemic goiter.The epidemic inquiries are done to study the prevalence points.The method of improving water to reduce iodine is done to observe the prevention effects. Results:In Linbar,Linlou and Hewa villages of Taiqian,goiter rate is 6.4% and tumefaction rate 22.4% in Linlou,iodine concentration of drinking water is 1059.6±533.8 μg/L,urinary iodine is 924.9±891.8 μg/L.thyroid uptake I rate of 24 hours is under 15% .These are endemic goiter areas according to the standard. In 1993, one drinking-water project was built in Linlou village of Taiqian county. The concentration of drinking water decrease from 420~2000 μg/L to 110 μg/L. After 6 yrars goiter rate decrease from 21.15% to 8.2% ,urinary iodine from 924.9±691.8 μg/L to 172.0±83.1μg/L,and thyroid uptake I rate of 24 improve from 13.3% ±5.8% to 28.6% ±9 7% .Conclusion: The endemic goiter is exist in Henan province. The method of improving water to reduce Iodine can effectively prevent and control the prevalence of endemic goiter in iodine areas of drinking water type.
