Basic Theory and Development Trend of Mobile Communication Terminals Customization

Using resources dependency theory, this study explores the forming process of terminal customization between cell phone manufactures and teleeom operators in telecom industry. With the scarcity and importance of owned resources, telecom operators have the power to affect the terminal customization and so as to control the business cooperation process. Terminal customization, which is based on the locked-on relationships, is also affected by market size, market value, compatibility of customized terminals, complexity of technical specifications and market concentration. Then there exist 3 types of terminal customization, namely branding mode, application-embedded mode and OEM mode. Finally I predict the developing trends of terminal customization in coming 3G era.
