Stationary properties of Nambu strings

It is shown that the string equations and boundary conditions for the open massless string do not follow consistently from the Nambu action. Nevertheless, all solutions are stationary under those variations which result in time-like or null surfaces. For strings with masses attached to the ends no consistency problems arise.
