Abstract:This article investigates the impact of sub-tasks on driving performance by evaluating driver's visual search ability. The driving takeover performance is reflected by driver's reaction time, and driver's visual search ability is evaluated by visual field test and eye movement data. The independent variables are defined as the type of sub-task undertaken by the driver and the length of time of the sub- task. The reaction time and eye movement data were collected from a total of 32 participants under different levels of immersion. The results show that after certain reaction time, participants performed with shorter response time and higher accuracy than the sub-task just started. The types of the sub-task undertaken by the participants have significant impacts on their visual search ability. Compared to the group with the sub-task of game, the participants in the group of cross-talk sub-task reacted faster and performed with higher accuracy. In addition, the immersion time of 5 minutes or 10 minutes had no significant impact on participant's visual search ability.
