Summary Structural features of the principal, urine-secreting cells (type 1 cells) of the Malpighian tubules of Carausius are de scribedquantitatively and discussed in relation to possible mechanisms of water and solute transport. Mitochondria are arranged in two bands of about equal volume near to the basal and apical surfaces, suggesting active processes occur at both surfaces. Basal infoldings and apical microvilli which greatly amplify the cell surface are probably primarily devices to increase the passive permeability of the tissue to solutes. They do not provide functionally significant standing-osmotic-gradients. The extensive endoplasmic reticulum is locally differentiated into several components and ramifies between the infoldings and along microvilli but probably is not an intracellular conduit for the majority of urinary constituents. Vesicles and stages in their formation or liberation are observed both basally and apically although they probably do not contribute significantly to transcellular transport. At present it remains a problem to satisfactorily account for observations that the urine of Carausius can be hypotonic.This investigation formed part of a dissertation for the degree of Ph. Summary In the brain of the cockroach Periplaneta americana, the beta lobes of the corpora pedunculata respond with an intense positive reaction to a specific fluorescence histochemical method for catecholamines. The fluorescence reaction disappears completely after prolonged treatment of the cockroaches with reserpine. An ultrastructural examination of the beta lobes in formaldehyde-glutaraldehyde-osmium fixed preparations reveals the presence of two types of fibres: 1) Fibres and nerve endings containing small clear vesicles and sligthly larger vesicles with a semi-dense content. The appearance and size distribution of these vesicles ist not affected by treatment with reserpine. 2) Fibres containing larger and denser vesicles, but practically no clear vesicles. The size distribution of these dense vesicles is only slightly affected by treatment of the cockroaches with reserpine.If brain slices are incubated in a medium containing noradrenaline or -methyl-noradrenaline and fixed in permanganate, small vesicles with electron-dense central cores show up, similar to those which have been described in vertebrate adrenergic nerve fibres (small granular vesicles). They are confined to one of the two types of fibres (a and b) visible in these preparations, namely to type b, whose correspondence with type 2 fibres of formaldehyde-glutaraldehyde-osmium fixed preparations is discussed.The authors wish to thank Mr. E. Summary Ant assemblages in five closely-spaced point habitats were studied over a three-year period in a subtropical area of South Africa. A total of 20,746 individuals in 56 species were sampled with pitfall traps. Rapid species turnover occurred during short periods after longer intervals of relatively constant species composition. There was annual cycling of total numbers of individuals. The temporal variance for total number of individuals within each habitat increased significantly with mean population size by a logarithmic regression. This indicates that population fluctuations are dependent upon the mean, with a distinctive relationship. The total number of species was cyclical, with annual and approximately half-yearly cycles. Each habitat nevertheless carried a characteristic mean number of species. The temporal variance of species richness showed a highly significant positive logarithmic relationship with the mean number of species. Pheidole megacephala (F.) accounted for 45% of all individuals. Its overall population showed annual cycles. Ph. megacephala population trend was the main determinant for seasonal variation of the whole assemblage in most habitats. Percentage dominance was positively linearly correlated with the variance and with mean population level. Although Ph. megacephala population variance increased with the mean, proportionate variability did not, indicating that high populations are no more variable than low populations. Five variability measures were compared with each other on ant assemblages containing only the common species (1st quartile) and then including the increasingly rare species (1st and 2nd, 1st, 2nd and 3rd, and all quartiles). Williamson's Variability Measure, using logarithmic or inverse sine transformations, gave variable results depending whether or not the rarer species were included in the analysis. The Coefficient of Fluctuation also gave variable results depending on assemblage size. The Coefficient of Variation and Proportionate Variability Measure gave similar and consistent results, indicating that common species are not more variable than rare ones. The rarer species are stenotopic and tend always to be rare, whereas the common species are eurytopic, highly competitive and demographically volatile. Control measures for common ants, and conservation of rare ants, should take cognizance of these trends.  相似文献

Summary We tested the hypothesis that herbivorous insects on desert shrubs contribute to short-term nitrogen cycling, and increase rates of nitrogen flux from nutrient rich plants. Creosotebush (Larrea tridentata) shrubs were treated with different combinations of fertilizer and water augmentations, resulting in different levels of foliage production and foliar nitrogen contents. Foliage arthropod populations, and nitrogen in canopy dry throughfall, wet throughfall and stemflow were measured to assess nitrogen flux rates relative to arthropod abundances on manipulated and unmanipulated shrubs over a one-month period during peak productivity. Numbers and biomass of foliage arthropods were significantly higher on fertilized shrubs. Sap-sucking phytophagous insects accounted for the greatest numbers of foliage arthropods, but leaf-chewing phytophagous insects represented the greatest biomass of foliage arthropods. Measured amounts of bulk frass (from leaf-chewing insects) were not significantly different among the various treatments. Amounts of nitrogen from dry and wet throughfall and stemflow were significantly greater under fertilized shrubs due to fine frass input from sap-sucking insects. Increased numbers and biomass of phytophagous insects on fertilized shrubs increased canopy to soil nitrogen flux due to increased levels of herbivory and excrement. Nitrogen excreted by foliage arthropods accounted for about 20% of the total one month canopy to soil nitrogen flux, while leaf litter accounted for about 80%.  相似文献

Summary Sections of neurosecretory cells fixed in glutaraldehyde and osmium tetroxide were studied by means of an EMMA-4 analytical microscope. Secretory granules in neurosecretory cells of the corpus cardiacum and of the brain, both in the desert locust Schistocerca and in the blowfly Calliphora, as well as neurosecretory granules in posterior pituitaries of the frog Rana and of the albino rat all contain a high concentration of calcium. A distinct sulphur peak was also a constant feature.In neurosecretory cells of the corpus cardiacum of Schistocerca the chromatin contained a high concentration of calcium. The mitochondria also contained much calcium, but part of this disappeared during preparation except when fixative and wash contained calcium chloride. By block staining with uranyl acetate most calcium is displaced from the mitochondria, whereas most of the calcium remains in the neurosecretory granules. Since the calcium peaks in spectra from neurosecretory granules appear of similar size, regardless of variations in the preparative procedure, this calcium must be firmly bound. The possible role of the calcium bound to the neurosecretory substance is discussed.The presence of sulphur in insect neurosecretory granules indicates the presence of a protein besides the hormone, i.e., an insect neurophysin.We wish to thank Dennis Greer for the operation of the analytical microscope. Summary The ultrastructure of the mid-gut cells of aged female Nasonia vitripennis is described. The mid-gut is a shrunken and distorted organ in the aged animal. The individual cells are highly disorganised and the organelle components are altered. The small lipid droplets formed in the apical cell region do not coalesce to form the large central lipid inclusions characteristic of the young animal. The rough endoplasmic reticulum is reduced and some of the mitochondria enlarge. The mid- and apical cell regions also contain large numbers of cytolysosomes. The basal cell region is essentially unchanged, but the channels formed by the infolded basal plasma membranes are dilated. The changes observed are discussed in relation to previous observations on other insect species.We are indebted to Professor E.W. Summary Exocytotic release of the secretory granules of the endocrine cells in the midgut of a cockroach, Periplaneta americana, was studied by means of fixation with tannic acid in combination with glutaraldehyde and osmium tetroxide. A sequence of images indicative of exocytosis suggests the following steps in this process: (1) A delicate connection appears between the granule-limiting membrane and the plasma membrane. (2) The plasma membrane approaches the granule, forming a concave indentation. (3) The granule-limiting membrane fuses with the plasma membrane and opens to give rise to an omega profile. (4) The granule content is voided into extracellular space. Exocytosis occurs not only at the base of the cell but occasionally at its side facing adjacent cells. (5) The exocytotic invagination after release becomes smaller and narrower; sometimes a coated pit with bristles appears. Multiple exocytosis, and exocytosis in the endocrine cells of the nidus, i.e., the regenerative cell mass, are also described.  相似文献

Summary The auditory and tensor nerves of cicadas are mixed nerves containing both afferent and efferent elements. In 17-year cicadas, and in Okanagana rimosa, the auditory nerve contains afferents from body hairs, from the detensor tympani-chordotonal organ, and some 1300–1500 afferents from the hearing organ. Within the fused metathoracic-abdominal ganglionic complex the receptors from both the auditory and tensor nerves form a neuropilar structure that reveals the metameric organization of this complex. A few fibers run anteriorly, projecting into the meso and prothoracic ganglia. Within the ganglionic complex a division of auditory nerve afferents into a dense intermediate and a more diffuse ventral neuropile is observed. In addition, a dorsal motor neuropile is outlined by arborizations of the timbal motor neuron. This neuron is one of several efferent cell types associated with the auditory nerve, and there is an indication that several efferent fibers innervate the timbal muscle. There is anatomical evidence for a possible neuronal coupling between the bilaterally symmetrical large timbal motor neurons. In general, central projections from the auditory and tensor nerves support evidence of a structural layering within the CNS of insects.  相似文献

Summary The ultrastructure of the rectal papillae of the parasitoid hymenopteran, Nasonia vitripennis (Walk), is described. These organs in this insect consist of four distinct cell types arranged as a closed, hollow cone. The majority of the cells are present in the raised cone, and are characterised by large numbers of mitochondria arranged in a membranous labyrinth. A series of cells form a collar around the base of the cone. Junction cells have been identified which are present at the point of insertion of the cone into the rectal epithelium. The base of the cone consists of cells with elaborately folded plasma membranes facing both the central cavity of the cone, and the haemolymph. The structure of this rectal papilla is compared with those found in other insects.We are indebted to Professor E. W. 飞机草挥发油对5种植物幼苗生长有显著的抑制作用,受抑制的大小排序为黑麦草>白菜>萝卜>四季豆>水稻.中等浓度(800mg·L-1)飞机草挥发油对水稻稻温病菌的抑制作用最强,对长春花疫病菌的抑制作用次之,对香蕉枯萎病菌的抑制作用最弱;其抑茵串分别为61.40%、29.27%和14.44%.10-20μl·株^-1的飞机草挥发油对小菜峨和黄曲条跳甲有显著的驱避产卵作用.经GC/MS,飞机草挥发油的化学成分主要是萜类化合物,如反式—石竹烯(16.58%)、δ—杜松烯(15.85%)、α—可巴烯(11.58%)、氧化石竹烯(9.63%)、大根香叶烯(4.96%)和α—Lu草烯(4.32%)。  相似文献
