DNA fragments containing argK-tox clusters and their flanking regions were cloned from the chromosomes of Pseudomonas syringae pathovar (pv.) actinidiae strain KW-11 (ACT) and P. syringae pv. phaseolicola strain MAFF 302282 (PHA), and then their sequences were determined. Comparative analysis of these sequences and the sequences of P. syringae pv. tomato DC3000 (TOM) (Buell et al., Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 100:10181–10186, 2003) and pv. syringae B728a (SYR) (Feil et al., Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 102:11064–11069, 2005) revealed that the chromosomal backbone regions of ACT and TOM shared a high similarity to each other but presented a low similarity to those of PHA and SYR. Nevertheless, almost-identical DNA regions of about 38 kb were confirmed to be present on the chromosomes of both ACT and PHA, which we named “tox islands.” The facts that the GC content of such tox islands was 6% lower than that of the chromosomal backbone regions of P. syringae, and that argK-tox clusters, which are considered to be of exogenous origin based on our previous studies (Sawada et al., J Mol Evol 54:437–457, 2002), were confirmed to be contained within the tox islands, suggested that the tox islands were an exogenous, mobile genetic element inserted into the chromosomes of P. syringae strains. It was also predicted that the tox islands integrated site-specifically into the homologous sites of the chromosomes of ACT and PHA in the same direction, respectively, wherein 34 common gene coding sequences (CDSs) existed. Furthermore, at the left end of the tox islands were three CDSs, which encoded polypeptides and had similarities to the members of the tyrosine recombinase family, suggesting that these putative site-specific recombinases were involved in the recent horizontal transfer of tox islands. Three species of sticklebacks ( Apeltes quadracus, Gasterosteus aculeatus , and Pungitius pungitius ( n = 236) were collected from five ponds on Sable Island. The nematodes Pseudoterranova decipiens, Contracaecum sp., Paracuaria adunca , and Cosmucephalus obvelatus , and the cestode Diphyllobothrium ditremum parasitized three-spined sticklebacks ( G. aculeatus ) and four-spined sticklebacks ( A. quadracus ) inhabiting four brackish water ponds. All the parasites except P. decipiens infected nine-spined sticklebacks ( P. pungitius ) from a freshwater pond. In addition, the cestode Schistocephalus pungitii , the copepod Thersitina gasterostei , and the monogenean Gyrodactylus canadensis occurred in nine-spined sticklebacks from the freshwater pond. The two cestodes, the copepod, and the sealworm, P. decipiens , were the most common parasites encountered. The remaining helminths were relatively rare. Most of the parasite species were larval forms which use gulls or seals as definitive hosts. These parasites probably colonized Sable Island with their definitive hosts, whereas only two species ( T. gasterostei and G. canadensis ) successfully colonized the island ponds with their fish hosts. The low parasite species richness encountered is attributed to the impoverished nature of the host fauna of Sable island, and the difficulty of colonization as a result of the island's isolation with respect to the mainland.  相似文献

A survey of the pteridophytes of Mauritius is presented, including a summary of their habitats, ecology, and phytogeographical affinities. Of the 186 infrageneric taxa recorded from the island, 8 are adventive or naturalized, and 27 are presumed rare or extinct. Identifying the mechanisms underlying invasive plant establishment and native plant decline remains a central goal in ecology, particularly for biodiversity hotspots such as islands. We re‐analyzed a previously published meta‐dataset to test the prediction that neighbor effects are stronger on islands vs. continents because island plants are weaker competitors. Although we detected marginally stronger neighbor effects on islands than continents, this was due, at least in part, to stronger competition among native species. An absence of studies testing neighbor effects between native vs. invasive plants on islands prevents a rigorous test for competition effects on islands, highlighting an important knowledge gap.  相似文献

Rapid climate change across the globe is having dramatic effects on wildlife. Responses of organisms to shifting thermal conditions often include physiological and behavioural accommodations, but to date these have been largely viewed and studied as naturally evolved phenomena (e.g. heat avoidance, sweating, panting) and not necessarily as strategies where animals exploit other anthropogenic conditions or resources. Moreover, the degree to which native versus introduced species show thermal plasticity has generated much conservation and ecological interest. We previously have observed introduced rosy-faced lovebirds (Agapornis roseicollis) perching in the relief-air vents on building faces in the Phoenix, Arizona, USA, metropolitan area, but doing so only during summer. Here, we show that such vent-perching events are significantly associated with extreme outdoor summer temperatures (when daily local highs routinely exceed 40°C). In fact, the temperature threshold at which we detected lovebirds starting to perch in cool air vents mirrors the upper range of the thermoneutral zone for this species. These results implicate novel, facultative use of an anthropogenic resource—industrial air-conditioning systems—by a recently introduced species (within the last 35 years) to cool down and survive extremely hot conditions in this urban ‘heat-island'' environment.  相似文献

Inter-α-trypsin inhibitor heavy chain 5 (ITIH5) is supposed to be involved in extracellular matrix stability and thus may play a key role in the inhibition of tumor progression. The current study is the first to analyze in depth ITIH5 expression as well as its potential clinical and functional impact in colon cancer. Based on 30 tumor and 30 adjacent normal tissues we examined ITIH5 mRNA expression and promoter methylation, whose significance was further validated by independent data sets from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) platform. In addition, ITIH5 protein expression was evaluated using immunohistochemistry. ITIH5 mRNA expression loss was significantly associated (P < 0.001) with hypermethylation of the ITIH5 promoter in primary colon tumors. In addition, treatment of tumor cell lines with demethylating (DAC) and histone acetylating (TSA) agents induced ITIH5 expression. In line, independent TCGA data revealed a significant expression loss of ITIH5, particularly in the MSI-high and CIMP-positive phenotype concordant with an increased ITIH5 hypermethylation in CIMP-positive colon tumors (P < 0.001). In proximal, i.e., right-sided tumors, abundant ITIH5 expression was associated with longer overall survival (OS, P = 0.049) and the CIMP-positive (P = 0.032) subgroup. Functionally, ITIH5 re-expression mediated a reduced proliferation in HCT116 and CaCo2 cells. In conclusion, our results indicate that ITIH5 is a novel putative tumor suppressor gene in colon cancer with a potential impact in the CIMP-related pathway. ITIH5 may serve as a novel epigenetic-based diagnostic biomarker with further clinical impact for risk stratification of CIMP-positive colon cancer patients.  相似文献

The energy expenditure of the tūī (Prosthemadera novaeseelandiae), a meliphagid endemic to New Zealand, was measured and compared with 20 species of honeyeaters (family Meliphagidae) to determine whether its expenditure is influenced either by life in a moist, temperate climate or an island residence. Body mass in the honeyeaters accounted for 91.5% of the variation in basal rate. The combination of body mass, climate and the maximal limit to an altitudinal distribution explained 98.6% of the variation in basal rate with tropical, low-altitude species having the highest mass-independent rate. The basal rates of meliphagids in tropical highlands are similar to those in temperate lowlands, which may reflect similar food supplies. The tūī mass-independent expenditure appears to reflect an active lifestyle in a temperate climate with no evidence that an island residence influenced its rate, whereas sedentary birds on New Zealand have responded to island life with a depressed basal rate. An effective analysis of the variation in energy expenditure requires the inclusion of the ecological and behavioural characteristics that distinguish species.  相似文献

There is growing evidence of changes in the timing of important ecological events, such as flowering in plants and reproduction in animals, in response to climate change, with implications for population decline and biodiversity loss. Recent work has shown that the timing of breeding in wild birds is changing in response to climate change partly because individuals are remarkably flexible in their timing of breeding. Despite this work, our understanding of these processes in wild populations remains very limited and biased towards species from temperate regions. Here, we report the response to changing climate in a tropical wild bird population using a long-term dataset on a formerly critically endangered island endemic, the Mauritius kestrel. We show that the frequency of spring rainfall affects the timing of breeding, with birds breeding later in wetter springs. Delays in breeding have consequences in terms of reduced reproductive success as birds get exposed to risks associated with adverse climatic conditions later on in the breeding season, which reduce nesting success. These results, combined with the fact that frequency of spring rainfall has increased by about 60 per cent in our study area since 1962, imply that climate change is exposing birds to the stochastic risks of late reproduction by causing them to start breeding relatively late in the season.  相似文献
