The spectral properties of the discrimination of pattern orientation in freely flying honeybees (Apis mellifera) were examined. Bees were trained to discriminate between two random black/white gratings oriented perpendicularly to each other, one of which was associated with a reward. Subsequently the bees were tested on two-colour gratings or gratings consisting of grey and coloured stripes, providing a range of different chromatic contrasts, luminance contrasts and specific channel contrasts. The results of these experiments indicate that orientation analysis in the honeybee is mediated almost exclusively by the green receptor channel, although the bee's visual system as a whole is endowed with excellent trichromatic colour vision. 相似文献

Six honey bee colonies hived in Langstroth nuclei were each artificially infested with 100 phoretic Varroa mites. Hive debris on bottom inserts was inspected every 3–4 days. The adult Varroa mites were compared with mounted specimens and catalogued into lightly pigmented and darkly pigmented females. After 4 months, an acaricide treatment was used to estimate the final mite population. Based on light and dark adult counts, we propose a balancing equation that follows the Varroa population increase at 7 day intervals and allows the calculation of experimental population growth rates. The calculated Varroa finite rate of increase is =1.021. Exponential and logistic growth models fitted to the balancing equation data gave R
2=0.986 and R

The behaviour of the endoparasitic tracheal mite, Acarapis woodi (Rennie) on honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) is a challenge to observe because of its small size. Through a microscope, we videotaped this mite's movement on young bees, dead bees and bees exposed to vegetable oil. Previous studies have shown that solid vegetable oil decreases mite infestations in a bee colony. We hypothesized that the oil alters mite behaviour to the detriment of the parasite, thus helping to safeguard the host. Habitat-seeking behaviour, identified as necessary for mites to locate a new host environment, was disrupted on both dead and oil-treated bees. Questing behaviour, which is associated with transfer between hosts, increased significantly on the dead and oily bees. Summary The topography of the antennal afferent path-ways was studied comparatively in the worker bee and the drone of Apis mellifera L. by cellular marking, following localized application of cobalt chloride to the cut end of one antenna. This study dealt principally with the first relay of the afferent pathway in the glomeruli of the antennal lobe. The counting and measurement of all the glomeruli were performed on 5 worker bees and 5 drones. An important sexual dimorphism, represented by 4 large and easily identifiable glomerular complexes, was demonstrated in the drone. In both worker bee and drone, four main regions of the glomerular neuropil were distinguished according to corresponding afferent bundles. The worker possessed 166 glomeruli and the drone 103. The number, position and dimensions of the glomeruli indicated that the glomerular organization was unvarying in worker bees and in drones. Concerning the internal structure of the glomeruli, two types were distinguished: the great majority (95%) exhibited a cortical layer, whereas in the 7 posterior glomeruli the synaptic fields of association seemed to be scattered throughout the whole volume. In honey bees (Apis mellifera), virgin queens may eject a liquid substance from their abdomens while they are engaged in fatal combat. We investigated the functional significance of spraying behavior by staging queen duels within colonies housed in observation hives. Spraying occurred in 39.7% of all interactions between rival queens and was recorded in 12 of 15 duels. Workers were highly attracted to the surfaces and individuals contaminated by spraying, forming tight clusters with hundreds of bees in which movement was severely restricted. One or both queens in a pair became immobilized by the workers in 37.5 and 29.2% of all spraying events, respectively, but the queens were never killed by the workers. Conversely, a mobile queen penetrated the worker aggregation and stung an immobilized queen in one-third of the observed bouts. Thus spraying may serve as a fighting tactic by virgin queens to increase their chances of winning by temporarily immobilizing their rivals. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. The time course of dark adaptation in Apis melifera L. was investigated by analyses of phototactic behaviour and electroretinogram (ERG). The behavioural results give a function for dark adaptation showing that in the dark after strong light adaptation the sensitivity increases exponentially with a time constant of 3 min. The sensitivity changes c. 2.4 log units during the time span of 5–720 s. The electrophysiological results indicate a smaller change in sensitivity at the level of the photoreceptors. Within a time span between 20 and 720 s the sensitivity increases during dark adaptation by a factor of 4.3 on a linear scale. 相似文献

In queen honey bees the free amino acid content in the haemolymph clearly depends on the physiological function and social environment of the individual. While in drones and workers the content of free amino acids increases after emergence until it reaches a peak in 5-day-old animals and decreases afterwards, the amino acid content in queens reaches its highest level (>60 nmol/ microl haemolymph) with the onset of egg laying (10 d of age). This level is about 2.5 times more than the highest level found in workers. Queens maintain this high level also when they are older (>30 d) and continue to lay eggs in average colonies. As in drones and workers, in queens the predominant amino acid is proline, which accounts for more than 50% of the total content of free amino acids in egg-laying individuals. When 10-day-old queens are prevented from mating and do not lay eggs, their amino acid content is significantly lower compared to laying queens of the same age. Also the social environment influences the contents of free amino acids in queens. When virgin queens were kept for 6 days with 20 worker bees and sufficient honey and pollen in an incubator, they had significantly lower concentrations of amino acids than virgin queens living for the same period with about 8000 workers in a colony. Here we describe a new phenomenon, entombed pollen, which is highly associated with increased colony mortality. Entombed pollen is sunken, capped cells amidst “normal”, uncapped cells of stored pollen, and some of the pollen contained within these cells is brick red in color. There appears to be a lack of microbial agents in the pollen, and larvae and adult bees do not have an increased rate of mortality when they are fed diets supplemented with entombed pollen in vitro, suggesting that the pollen itself is not directly responsible for increased colony mortality. However, the increased incidence of entombed pollen in reused wax comb suggests that there is a transmittable factor common to the phenomenon and colony mortality. In addition, there were elevated pesticide levels, notably of the fungicide chlorothalonil, in entombed pollen. Additional studies are needed to determine if there is a causal relationship between entombed pollen, chemical residues, and colony mortality. 相似文献

Abstract. The distribution of coumaphos (the active component of perizin), fed to individual honeybees, in the honey stomach, haemolymph, midgut and rectum was studied over time. Concurrently, we investigated changes occurring in the haemolymph volume due to the ingestion of perizin, and we examined the influence of a Nosema apis infection on the survival of bees that had been fed perizin. The maximum amount of coumaphos in the haemolymph was found 4h after ingestion, but it was only 2–3% of the total amount recovered. After 15 min 55% of the total amount of the coumaphos recovered was in the honey stomach and available for distribution within the colony by trophallaxis, while 45% had already passed the proventriculus. Ultimately the coumaphos accumulated in the rectum. The volume of the haemolymph significantly increased in bees which were fed perizin compared with bees which were fed syrup and with non-fed bees. The lethal dose of coumaphos to 3-day-old bees was three times higher than the lethal dose for 18- and 1-day-old bees. The number of Nosema apis spores in the alimentary canal was not correlated with the survival of the bees that were fed perizin. It is concluded that coumaphos can act as a systemic agent and can be distributed to other individuals in a colony through trophallaxis, but these effects are limited to a maximum period of 12h after ingestion. 相似文献

Octopamine plays important neuromodulatory roles in the honeybee brain. Accordingly, mRNA from a recently identified honeybee octopamine receptor (AmOA1) is distributed throughout the brain. We have evaluated the occurrence of AmOA1 in the antennal lobe (AL) as well as rest of the brain (RB) by western blotting using an antiserum raised against a peptide selected from AmOA1 sequence. In addition to an expected band (78 kDa in the AL), one additional band (72 kDa) was identified from the AL and four bands (48, 60, 72 and 78 kDa) were observed in the RB. These bands were also recognized with antiserum against a different peptide segment from an octopamine receptor ortholog from the fruitfly (OAMB). Significant sequence identity with the peptide segment used to generate the antiserum was only found with OAMB and its splice variants in fruitfly; it was less conserved in other biogenic amine receptors from honeybee and other insects. Furthermore, western blot analysis performed on brains with dsRNA-treated antennal lobes showed a decrease in the intensity of all four bands. This suggests that AmOA1 antiserum specifically recognizes one or more types of AmOA1 receptors in the honeybee brain.
