Social capital and profits of small firms in the French construction industry

The profitability of small businesses in the French construction industry depends partly on their social capital. However, social capital yields advantages as well as constraints. How and under what conditions do social networks improve a company's profit margins? From a socio‐technical perspective and strategic analysis, we defend the idea that return on social capital is conditioned by the nature of the tasks performed and by the interdependencies among firms. Comparing about 160 businesses from four various crafts, we show that loose networks profit relatively specialized businesses working independently on construction sites, while cohesive networks benefit those businesses that are most affected by socio‐technical uncertainties.

Resource Allocation for Concrete Batch Plant Operation: Case Study

A concrete batch plant is an important element in any concrete construction process, whether it is working as a central mixing plant onsite or is offsite supplying ready mixed concrete to a project. This study tackles the problem of optimizing plant production to maximize profit and, if possible, revenue. A linear programming model has been designed to optimize the plant operation. The maximum production rate for each type of concrete can be obtained by solving the model under the given constraints. A sensitivity analysis is conducted to provide management with a flexible range of prices per cubic yard (cubic meter) and material storage limits. In addition, a model has been designed to determine the optimal number of transit mixers based upon the required quantity of concrete. A chart has been developed to determine the quantities of concrete ingredient materials required daily to organize the available storage space and to plan their delivery.     

A QoS-based dynamic pricing approach for services provisioning in heterogeneous wireless access networks

In this paper we propose a simple QoS-based dynamic pricing approach for services provisioning in a heterogeneous wireless access network environment which attempts to increase user’s satisfaction level by firstly, maximizing the provided QoS level, and secondly, by applying dynamic pricing strategies according to the QoS. These strategies will allow service providers to maximize their profits. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed dynamic pricing approach benefits both users and wireless service providers (WSPs). Results also suggest that users have better overall satisfaction due to a better QoS level and fairer prices. The analysis shows that our proposed pricing approach contributes to an increase in WSPs profits compared to the application of the flat-rate pricing model in a competitive market-model.     

Prepayment Ability to Offset Inflation

A model is presented to highlight actions that both owners and contractors, who do construction overseas, need to take in order to obtain costeffective construction projects. The model delineates a clear relationship between inflation, price escalation, time‐lag, prepayment, and the effects of price escalation on the value of the project. To simplify that relationship, the model concentrates inflation, price escalation, time‐lag, and profits into one term, the project's net present value. The analysis reveals three major points. First, the prepayment can be viewed and quantified as an additional markup whose benefits should be shared with the owner. Second, there is, indeed, an equilibrium point that defines the extent to which the prepayment accounts for inflation coverage, and thus no price escalation is needed. Finally, price escalation clauses in countries having high levels of inflation do not encourage prudence in spending. On the contrary, price escalation clauses encourage price escalation.
