During the Audouin's Gull's breeding season at the Ebro Delta in 1993, 24 fresh eggs from eight three-egg clutches (modal clutch-size) were collected at the peak of the laying period. Eggs were processed to obtain formalin-fixed yolks, which were halved and stained using the potassium dichromate method. Digitized images of the yolks were examined to assess the daily rates of yolk deposition. We used these data in combination with egg compositional analysis to build a model of energy demands during the formation of an average clutch in Audouin's Gull. To show how the different parameters of clutch formation affect the daily energy investment peak, we performed a simulation analysis in which the rapid yolk development (RYD) period, the follicle triggering interval (FTI), the laying interval (LI) and the albumen synthesis period (ASP) were allowed to vary simultaneously. In our sample, the mean RYD period was seven days with a range from six to eight days. There were no significant differences in yolk volume among eggs in a clutch, but albumen volume was significantly smaller in third eggs. According to our model the albumen synthesis of the a-egg coincides with the energy demand peak for clutch formation. This peak represents an increase by ca. 42% in female energy requirements. Values obtained from the simulation analysis showed that only the ASP of the a-egg and the RYD durations of the second and third follicles produced noticeable reductions in peak energy investment. We predict that in gulls, whose laying intervals seem to be kept constant, significant increases of the durations of the RYD periods of second and third eggs, or even significant reductions of yolk size of these eggs, may operate simultaneously to match the energy demands during clutch formation to the prevailing food conditions. 相似文献

The changes of stomatal and cuticular transpiration of bean plants were investigated by graphical transpiration curves method (Slavík 1958). Bean leaves were infected by fungusUromyces appendiculatus (Pers.) Link. After the infection the intensity of stomatal transpiration had a decreasing tendency. Beginning with the sixth day after infection, the proportion of stomatal and cuticular transpirations becomes more expressive, i.e. the leaves transpire more by cuticles than by stomata. Persistence of drug-induced chromosome aberrations in peripheral blood lymphocytes of the rat 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We have studied the persistence of pre-clastogenic lesions, detected as induced chromosomal aberrations, in rat peripheral lymphocytes at various time intervals after acute treatment with 3 different antineoplastic drugs: cyclophosphamide (CPA), 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and adriamycin (AM). Single i.p. doses were administered to groups of rats and heart blood samples from each group were taken after 3, 12, 24 or 48 h or weekly up to 20 weeks later. The cytogenetic analysis was performed on lymphocytes cultured for 33 h after sampling. The results for CPA exposure (10 mg/kg) show that the yield of chromosome aberrations is maximal 3 h after the treatment (20 times the control level). For up to 8 weeks the values remain about 6 times the baseline; afterwards a decrease is observed and the control level is reached after 20 weeks. For 5-FU (50 mg/kg) a remarkable increase (13-fold) in chromosomal damage is observed at the first sampling time. Within 48 h the effect is drastically reduced but persistent (3 times the control level), and the level returns to spontaneous values 1 week later. AM treatment (2 mg/kg) induced an increase of about 8 times the control level at 3 h post exposure. The clastogenic effects remained at a detectable level for 1 week (about 6 times the control level at all sampling times); 2 weeks after the treatment the control level was found. A parallel analysis was performed on bone marrow cells. In this tissue the clastogenic effects of the treatments were maximal, as in lymphocytes, at the first sampling time (20-25 times the control level) and were no longer detectable within 72 h after exposure, irrespective of the administered drug. 相似文献

As conventional treatments are unsuccessful, the survival rate of stage D3 prostate cancer patients is poor. Reports have
suggested the existence of humoral and cell-mediated immunity (CMI) against prostate cancer tumour-associated antigens (TAA).
These observations prompted us to treat stage D3 prostate cancer patients with an in vitro produced transfer factor (TF) able
to transfer, in vitro and in vivo, CMI against bladder and prostate TAA. Fifty patients entered this study and received one
intramuscular injection of 2–5 units of specific TF monthly. Follow-up, ranging from 1 to 9 years, showed that complete remission
was achieved in 2 patients, partial remission in 6, and no progression of metastatic disease in 14. The median survival was

A complete series of terminally blocked, monodispersed homo-oligopeptides (to the pentamer level) from the sterically demanding, medium-ring alicyclic Cα,α-disubstituted glycine 1-aminocyclooctane-1-carb oxylic acid (Ac8c), and two Ala/Ac8c tripeptides, were synthesized by solution methods and fully characterized. The preferred conformation of all the oligopeptides was determined in deuterochloroform solution by IR absorption and 1H-NMR. The molecular structures of the amino acid derivative Z-Ac8c-OH, the dipeptide pBrBz- (Ac8c)2-OH and the tripeptide pBrBz-(Ac8c)3-OtBu were assessed in the crystal state by X-ray diffraction. Conformational energy computations were performed on the monopeptide Ac-Ac8c-NHMe. Taken together, the results obtained strongly support the view that the Ac8c residue is an effective β-turn and helix former. A comparison is also made with the conformational preferences of α-aminoisobutyric acid, the prototype of Cα, α-disubstituted glycines, and of the other members of the family of 1-aminocycloalkane-1-carboxylic acids (Acnc, with n=3, 5–7) investigated so far. Plasmids S-a and Rts1 suppress the galactose-sensitive phenotype of galE mutants of Escherichia coli K-12, giving rise to both galactose-fermenting and nonfermenting strains. Fermenting strains produce normal inducible UDP-galactose epimerase. Plasmids extracted from either a fermenting or a nonfermenting strain are indistinguishable when examined by either measurements of length of relaxed circular molecules by electron microscopy or electrophoretic pattern of restriction endonuclease digestion products. Summary Experiments designed to test the olfactory hypothesis of pigeon navigation by application of odorous substances to the birds' beaks and nostrils had shown until now variable results which have been interpreted differently. Using a new procedure, we were able to obtain consistent results. In each of the ten experiments performed, pigeons treated with -pinene were randomly oriented whereas control birds were not. Summary European populations of the turbellarianMesostoma ehrenbergii can produce two types of eggs according to a seasonal cycle. Subitaneous eggs (S eggs) are produced throughout the warm season and develop rapidly inside the parental uteri. They are meant to ensure a fast increase in the number of worms. Dormant eggs (D eggs) are produced during the warm season and are usually deposited in water at the death of the parent. They can hatch at the beginning of the next warm season and are, therefore, meant to ensure the survival of the population throughout the cold season, when adult worms are no longer present.S eggs are bounded by a thin, translucent covering which has a loose structure and is mainly proteinaceous in composition. These characteristics account for the functional role played by the S egg covering during embryonic development. The covering has, in fact, to be permeable to parental nutrients, and to keep pace, by stretching, with the enlargement of the embryo. By contrast, D eggs are bounded by a thick shell, presumably composed of a sclerotin, the precursors of which (polyphenols) are synthesized together with yolk in the vitelline cells.
