Egg mass shows large intraspecific variation in birds and is repeatable within individuals. The mechanisms underlying this variation are unknown. We hypothesized that measures of egg quality (the mass of yolk protein, yolk lipid, and albumen protein) would be positively correlated with the plasma pools of the yolk precursor vitellogenin, and the masses of the oviduct, metabolic machinery (liver, heart, lungs, kidneys, gizzard, small intestine and pancreas), and endogenous stores of protein and lipid. We tested these predictions in European Starlings Sturnus vulgaris collected at the peak of egg production effort. In contrast to our predictions, both yolk protein and yolk lipid were negatively correlated with plasma vitellogenin levels. Albumen protein was positively related to oviduct mass, but other aspects of body composition failed to explain variation in egg quality. Hence, while we observed correlations between egg composition and peripheral systems (circulating precursor pools and the oviduct), we found no evidence that egg quality is determined by more general processes, i.e., the supply and processing of nutrients.  相似文献

An improved method for antibiotic resistance recovery of Bradyrhizobium japonicum from soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) nodules that is simple, time saving, and economical was developed. This technique involves the use of two 96-well microtiter plates as a multinodule sterilization chamber and a template and a third plate as a 16-point replicator constructed with steel nails affixed to the plate with epoxy cement. With this system a team of four technicians could type 3,000 nodules per day. This method was useful in assessing strain establishment and interstrain competition when one or more uniquely labeled strains of B. japonicum were inoculated onto either growth-room- or field-grown soybeans. Contamination was low and reproducibility across replicates approached the theoretical upper limit. Simplicity in design and use made this recovery method especially adaptable for field studies in which large numbers of nodules were required to provide a representative statistical sample offering good precision.  相似文献

Murine stocks with wild-derived hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT) A alleles (Hprt a) have erythrocyte HPRT activity levels that are approximately 25-fold (Mus musculus castaneus) and 70-fold (Mus spretus) higher than those of laboratory strains of mice with the common Hprt b allele (Mus musculus: C3H/HeHa or C57B1/6). Since the purified HPRT A and B enzymes have substantially similar maximal specific activities (64 and 46 units/mg of protein, respectively), we infer that these HPRT activity levels closely approximate the relative levels of HPRT protein in these cells. Red blood cells of HPRT A and B mice have similar levels of adenine phosphoribosyltransferase activity (APRT; EC 2.4.2.7) and reticulocyte percentages, which suggests that the elevated levels of HPRT in erythrocytes of HPRT A mice are not secondary consequences of abnormal erythroid cell development. The HPRT activity levels in reticulocytes of HPRT B mice are approximately 35-fold higher than the levels in their erythrocytes and approach the HPRT activity levels in reticulocytes of HPRT A mice. Thus, the marked differences in the levels of HPRT protein in erythrocytes of HPRT A and B mice result from differences in the extent to which the HPRT A and B proteins are retained as reticulocytes mature to erythrocytes. The substantial and preferential loss of HPRT B activity from reticulocytes is paralleled by an equivalent loss of HPRT immunoreactive protein (i.e., CRM) from that cell, and we infer that the HPRT B protein is degraded or extruded as reticulocytes mature to erythrocytes.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Summary Exhausting activity in the sea raven resulted in a pronounced extracellular acidosis, which consisted of a large, short-lived respiratory component and a small, longer-lived metabolic component. Thi disturbance had been corrected by 12 h. White muscle experienced a pronounced intracellular acidosis of chiefly metabolic origin, with pHi dropping from a resting value of 7.51 to a low of 7.10 immediately post-activity. The recovery of pHi was associated with a reduction in muscle lactate. Despite the large increase in , cardiac muscle pHi remained constant postactivity, actually showing an alkalosis at 30 min into recovery. Maintenance of cardiac muscle pHi was achieved by an accumulation of HCO 3 intracellularly.  相似文献

When angiosperm cells are cultured in a liquid medium they may grow in the form of free, single cells and form small to large groups of cells. This has been shown in earlier papers. This paper deals with the growth of strains of cells (Daucus carota and Haplopappus gracilis cells were used), washed and filtered free from the larger groups, on nutrient agar media in Petri dishes, thus simulating familiar microbiological technique. Each discrete member of a suspension is referred to as a “unit.” On the order of 1–10% of the separate units of a suspension may be induced to grow into viable colonies, depending on the strain and the conditions employed. Whereas at least 30% of the free single carrot cells were shown to be capable of division, only up to about 4% continued their growth to form macroscopically visible colonies when they were widely dispersed. Coconut milk promotes the growth of carrot cells into colonies. Both coconut milk and napthaleneacetic acid, which interact synergistically, arc required for the growth of Haplopappus cells. Various techniques which affect viability (the frequency with which units grow into colonies) were investigated. The viability of carrot units was found (1) to increase with their density on the plates; (2) to decrease upon washing the suspensions prior to plating; (3) to increase with increasing initial size; and (4) to decrease to a vanishingly low value in rigorously filtered suspensions which consist principally of single cells, although the single cells were found to grow with appreciable frequency when the larger units were also present; and (5) to increase dramatically (100-fold) when a rigorously filtered suspension was plated on a medium upon which pieces of growing cultured tissue were placed. Thus, the induction of growth in free cells is enhanced, even in an environment nutritionally optimal for the growth of the larger cell masses, by as yet unknown factors which are contributed by the cells themselves, or by adjacent cells or groups of cells. It is suggested that within a group of cells growing in culture, and perhaps also in the organized growing regions of intact plants, the dividing cells are nourished or stimulated by adjacent but less frequently dividing cells. Summary Thievery of food items among colonies of a ponerine ant,Ectatomma ruidum was common; nonnestmates in colonies or near the colony entrances receive incoming food items and carry them to their own colony. In our study area 7 of 10 colonies were victimized by thief ants. Colonies have discrete home ranges and home range size is correlated with the number of workers in the colony. Worker ants discriminate nestmates from non-nestmates when non-nestmates are presented at colony entrances, but individuals from different colonies were not observed to engage in agonistic interactions away from nest entrances. Non-nestmates gain entrance to colonies when the entrance is unguarded. Many instances of non-nestmates being removed from colonies by residents were observed. The costs and benefits of theft under these circumstances are considered.  相似文献
