Summary Survival of microorganisms (Escherichia coli has been used as an example) is affected by a combination of salinity and high pH induced by the active photosynthesis of marine microalgae (Aphanotece or Dunaliella sp.). This effect can be applied to create a more efficient wastewater treatment process using algal stabilization ponds.  相似文献

The metabolic pathway called the arachidonic acid cascade produces a wide range of eicosanoids, such as prostaglandins, thromboxanes and leukotrienes with potent biological activities. Recombinant DNA techniques have made it possible to determine the nucleotide sequences of cDNAs and/or genomic structures for the enzymes involved in the pathway. Sequence comparison analyses of the accumulated sequence data have brought great insights into the structure, function and molecular evolution of the enzymes. This paper reviews the sequence comparison analyses of the enzymes involved in the arachidonic acid cascade.  相似文献

Summary The structure of hemocytes in the normal state and during blood coagulation, and the intracellular localization of three clotting factors and two antimicrobial factors were examined in the Japanese horseshoe crabTachypleus tridentatus. Two types of hemocytes were found in the circulating blood: non-granular and granular hemocytes. The latter contained numerous dense granules classed into two major types: L- and D-granules. The L-granules were larger (up to 1.5 m in diameter) and less electron-dense than the D-granules (less than 0.6 m in diameter). The L-granules contained three clotting factors and one antimicrobial factor, whereas the D-granules exclusively contained the other antimicrobial factor. After treatment with endotoxin, the L-granules were released more rapidly than the D-granules, although almost all granules were finally exocytosed. The granular hemocyte possessed a single Golgi complex; possible precursor granules of L-granules and D-granules contained tubular and condensed dense material, respectively. These data are discussed in relation to the self-defense mechanisms of the horseshoe crab.  相似文献

Of 127 hypertensive patients aged 12 to 40 investigated by intravenous pyelography, abdominal aortography, and renal biopsy an underlying cause was found in 57%. The proportion with secondary hypertension was higher in young patients and in those with severe hypertension. Primary arteritis of the aorta was an important cause of renovascular hypertension in an Asian population.  相似文献

Zinc ion was found in various kinds of polymerases and involved in the activation of the 3'-hydroxyl group of primer chain's growing end. In order to investigate whether zinc ion was selected for nucleotide synthesizing system inevitably or by historical accident, ab initio molecular orbital calculations were carried out and the results suggest that zinc ion may have been selected inevitably.  相似文献

Droughts are linked to tree die-offs in the biodiverse humid tropics. We assessed drought response of a Dipterocarp Forest and found a marginal decrease in tree survival, indicating drought resistance. Understory and emergent species were sensitive to drought. Urgent focus is needed to understand drought impacts and plant physiological responses in South Asian forests.  相似文献

A capped cyclodextrin, 6-deoxy-6-(p-hydroxy-m-nitrophenacylthio)-β-cyclodextrin, was prepared in order to detect any conformational change of the host upon the guest binding. The association constant between the cyclodextrin and 1-adamantanecarboxylate, cyclohexanecarboxylate, p-methylbenzoate, 3,3-dimethylbutyrate, or 2,2-dimethylpropionate was enhanced 20, 5.3, 3.7, 2.3, or 2.0 times, respectively, by chromophore capping. The changes in the electronic, NMR, and circular dichroism spectra as well as pKa of this cyclodextrin upon binding of the guest strongly indicate a conformational change around the chromophoric moiety of the cyclodextrin.  相似文献

Summary Anti-mitochondrial autoantibody and fluorescent derivatives of insulin stain phase-dense mitochondria in acetone-fixed monolayers of fibroblasts. Double fluorochrome studies show mitochondria in close topographic association with intermediate filaments. In cells treated with vinblastine or colchicine, mitochondria are relocated in sites closely associated with coils of perinuclear intermediate filaments. In contrast, autoantibody to polyribosomes stains granules aligned in the long axis of well spread embryonic cells, in the direction of actin-containing fibrils, an arrangement that is lost in cells pretreated with the actin filament disrupting drug cytochalasin B. In more mature fibroblasts, antiribosomal antibody reacts with phase-dense rough endoplasmic reticulum and this staining pattern is not affected by cytochalasin B. The observations suggest that mitochondria are associated with intermediate filaments and that free polyribosomes, but not polyribosomes attached to rough endoplasmic reticulum, are associated with cytoplasmic actin.Supported by a grant from the Anti-Cancer Council of Victoria.
