The process of electrochemical deposition of zinc in the presence of boron-doped detonation nanodiamonds

The influence of detonation of nanodiamonds doped with boron during the detonation synthesis (DND-boron) on the process of electrochemical deposition of zinc from a zincate electrolytic solution is investigated. It is shown that the throwing power (the coating uniformity) increases 2to 4-fold depending on the DND–boron concentration, the electrolytic conductivity remains unchanged, the corrosion resistance (as measured by the corrosion currents) of the Zn–DND-boron coating grows 2.6 times when tested in the 3% NaCl solution and 3 times in the climatic chamber.

BlobFinder, a tool for fluorescence microscopy image cytometry

Images can be acquired at high rates with modern fluorescence microscopy hardware, giving rise to a demand for high-speed analysis of image data. Digital image cytometry, i.e., automated measurements and extraction of quantitative data from images of cells, provides valuable information for many types of biomedical analysis. There exists a number of different image analysis software packages that can be programmed to perform a wide array of useful measurements. However, the multi-application capability often compromises the simplicity of the tool. Also, the gain in speed of analysis is often compromised by time spent learning complicated software. We provide a free software called BlobFinder that is intended for a limited type of application, making it easy to use, easy to learn and optimized for its particular task. BlobFinder can perform batch processing of image data and quantify as well as localize cells and point like source signals in fluorescence microscopy images, e.g., from FISH, in situ PLA and padlock probing, in a fast and easy way.     

NMR studies on vortices in rotating3He-A

NMR measurements are reported on rotating³He-A in a long cylindrical geometry of 5 mm diameter at a liquid pressure of 29.3 bar and in axial magnetic fields of 14.2, 28.4, and 56.9 mT. At 28.4 mT, NMR studies are also reported in fields inclined by 25° and 90° from the axis of rotation. The frequency shift, the width, and the intensity of the spin wave modes localized on the soft vortex cores, as well as the additional broadening of the main NMR line during rotation, were measured as a function of temperature, angular velocity , magnetic field intensity, and its inclination angle. Also observed were a critical angular velocity of vortex formation, hysteretic behavior in the number of vortices when comparing accelerating rotation to decelerating, and metastable vortex densities, presumably a vortex tangle after rapid oscillatory acceleration. The results can be understood in terms of the continuous 4 vortices first proposed by Seppälä and Volovik.     

Magnetization and torque measurements on rotating niobium cylinders and ellipsoids

The magnetization and torque of niobium samples of different shapes rotating in a magnetic field are studied with emphasis on the behavior near the upper critical field H _c2. The observed rotational magnetization is free of hysteresis and is found to represent a good approximation to the thermodynamic equilibrium magnetization of the samples if pinning is not too strong and the frequency of rotation is sufficiently low. The viscous contribution to the torque exhibits a step at H _c2whose dependence on sample geometry is in good agreement with predictions derived under the simple assumption of a homogeneous arrangement of parallel straight vortices in the rotating sample.
