In this note we consider the stability preserving properties of diagonal Padé approximations to the matrix exponential. We show that while diagonal Padé approximations preserve quadratic stability when going from continuous-time to discrete-time, the converse is not true. We discuss the implications of this result for discretizing switched linear systems. We also show that for continuous-time switched systems which are exponentially stable, but not quadratically stable, a Padé approximation may not preserve stability.  相似文献

Modeling the formation of macroscopic segregation channels during directional solidification processes has important applications in the casting industry. Computations that consider thermosolutal convection involve different length scales ranging from the small solute boundary layer at the dendrite tips to the characteristic size of the casting. In general, numerical models of solidification in the presence of a developing mushy zone are computationally inefficient because of nonlinear transport in an anisotropic porous medium. In the current work, mesh adaptation with triangular finite elements is used in conjunction with an efficient fractional-step solver of the momentum equations to predict the occurrence of channel-type segregation defects or freckles. The triangulations are created dynamically using an unstructured grid generator and a refinement criterion that tracks the position of the channel segregates. The efficiency of mesh adaptation is illustrated with simulations showing channel formation and macrosegregation in directional solidification of a Pb–Sn alloy.  相似文献

Molecular therapy using a small interfering RNA (siRNA) has shown promise in the development of novel therapeutics. Various formulations have been used for in vivo delivery of siRNAs. However, the stability of short double‐stranded RNA molecules in the blood and efficiency of siRNA delivery into target organs or tissues following systemic administration have been the major issues that limit applications of siRNA in human patients. In this study, multifunctional siRNA delivery nanoparticles are developed that combine imaging capability of nanoparticles with urokinase plasminogen activator receptor‐targeted delivery of siRNA expressing DNA nanocassettes. This theranostic nanoparticle platform consists of a nanoparticle conjugated with targeting ligands and double‐stranded DNA nanocassettes containing a U6 promoter and a shRNA gene for in vivo siRNA expression. Targeted delivery and gene silencing efficiency of firefly luciferase siRNA nanogenerators are demonstrated in tumor cells and in animal tumor models. Delivery of survivin siRNA expressing nanocassettes into tumor cells induces apoptotic cell death and sensitizes cells to chemotherapy drugs. The ability of expression of siRNAs from multiple nanocassettes conjugated to a single nanoparticle following receptor‐mediated internalization should enhance the therapeutic effect of the siRNA‐mediated cancer therapy.  相似文献

In the Quadrupole Magnetic Sorter (QMS) magnetic particles enter a vertical flow annulus and are separated from non-magnetic particles by radial deflection into an outer annulus where the purified magnetic particles are collected via a flow splitter. The purity of magnetically isolated particles in QMS is affected by the migration of nonmagnetic particles across transport lamina in the annular flow channel. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations were used to predict the flow patterns, pressure drop and nonspecific crossover in QMS flow channel for the isolation of pancreatic islets of Langerhans. Simulation results were compared with the experimental results to validate the CFD model. Results of the simulations were used to show that one design gives up to 10% less nonspecific crossover than another and this model can be used to optimise the flow channel design to achieve maximum purity of magnetic particles.  相似文献

Conventionally in friction welding, the rubbing or faying ends of the base material rods are square turned. For the case of dissimilar friction welding, this design is not optimum because of differential flow behavior of the materials. When, only one of the materials deforms preferentially, the actions of cleaning and expulsion of oxides and impurities from the interface would not be as effective. This will adversely affect the joint properties. In this study, alternate designs of faying surfaces such as providing taper (external and internal) and smoother surfaces are compared with the square cut design. The aim was to study how the faying surface conditions of the stronger material affect the flow behavior of the weaker material. By affecting better flow behavior, the intention was to expel intermetallics and other impurities from the interface, and thereby improve joint properties. Friction welding of stainless steel with aluminum alloy (aluminum-magnesium-silicon) was studied. The joints were evaluated for strength and it is found that the external tapered system has the best strength. Different characterization techniques such as optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction were carried out to observe different phases, microstructure zones, etc., at the interface. Finally, possible reasons for the better strength of tapered system were discussed.  相似文献

Pallet rack uprights are braced in the cross-aisle direction forming a frame, which behaves like a built-up column. Currently two approaches prevail in the racking industry to determine the shear stiffness of these frames. The Rack Manufacturers’ Institute (RMI) code uses a theoretical formula whereas the Federation Europeenne de la Manutention (FEM) code requires testing. There is a considerable difference in the stiffness values determined by the two approaches. A literature review showed that the stiffness predicted by the RMI code could be up to 20 times higher than the experimental stiffness. The shear stiffness of the frames is influenced by the bracing pattern and the connections between the elements. Local distortion of the thin walled open section upright, joint eccentricity and slip due to bolt clearances all affect the behaviour of the frames. The present paper describes experimental and numerical studies conducted at Oxford Brookes University to evaluate shear stiffness.  相似文献

Our research agenda focuses on building software agents that can employ user modeling techniques to facilitate information access and management tasks. Personal assistant agents embody a clearly beneficial application of intelligent agent technology. A particular kind of assistant agents, recommender systems, can be used to recommend items of interest to users. To be successful, such systems should be able to model and reason with user preferences for items in the application domain. Our primary concern is to develop a reasoning procedure that can meaningfully and systematically tradeoff between user preferences. We have adapted mechanisms from voting theory that have desirable guarantees regarding the recommendations generated from stored preferences. To demonstrate the applicability of our technique, we have developed a movie recommender system that caters to the interests of users. We present issues and initial results based on experimental data of our research that employs voting theory for user modeling, focusing on issues that are especially important in the context of user modeling. We provide multiple query modalities by which the user can pose unconstrained, constrained, or instance-based queries. Our interactive agent learns a user model by gaining feedback aboutits recommended movies from the user. We also provide pro-active information gathering to make user interaction more rewarding. In the paper, we outline the current status of our implementation with particular emphasis on the mechanisms used to provide robust and effective recommendations.  相似文献
