Teaching severely self-abusive and aggressive autistic residents to exit to fire alarms

Fifty-two case-hardened, severely self-abusive and aggressive autistic and retarded students, living in six different community residences, were trained to exit their residences, without the presence or assistance of staff, when a fire alarm sounded at night. On a pretest, prior to an 11-week period of intensive environmental and behavioral interventions, only 25% of the students exited within 2 1/2 minutes and independent of staff assistance. At posttest, 100% exited successfully, in a mean evacuation time of 60 seconds. The study was conducted at the Behavior Research Institute (BRI).

A constant-volume gas pump for gas electrodes

A pump suitable for use with gas electrodes, in which recirculation of the gas is necessary, is described. The system to which the cell with the gas electrode and the pump are connected does not change its volume when the pump is in operation. The pump works as follows: an embolus, consisting of a Tefloncoated magnetic stirring bar, placed inside a glass tube having an internal diameter slightly larger than the diameter of the bar, is moved from the outside with a permanent magnet, which in turn is moved horizontally along the tube by means of a mechanical assembly driven by an electric motor. The motion of the embolus is accompanied by the closing and opening of glass valves which allow the gas to circulate in the desired direction. The pump, used in conjunction with a vacuum line, operates from pressures as low as 60 Torr to above atmospheric pressure. The operation of the pump is unaffected by organic gases and most inorganic gases.

Laboratory abnormalities in thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura. Canadian Apheresis Group

Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura is an uncommon disorder that requires prompt recognition and intervention to prevent death. To date, information regarding the classic laboratory abnormalities in the disease has been derived from small numbers of patients whose laboratory tests have been done at many different sites. We report the laboratory findings in 135 patients who presented with thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura to 17 Canadian centres. 50 men and 85 women had a mean platelet count of 25.3+/-19.4x10(9)/l. The initial platelet count correlated with mortality; 32% of patients with a platelet count of 20x10(9)/l or less died compared with 18% of patients with a platelet count >20x10(9)/l (P=0.058). The platelet-associated IgG was elevated in 88% at presentation whereas the indirect platelet suspension immunofluorescence test was positive in only 18%, 93% of the sera showed reactivity against platelets following protein blotting. All sera tested also showed reactivity against endothelial cells. Immune complexes were seen in all patients, whereas the platelet aggregating factor was detected in 59%. Although the von Willebrand factor was elevated in the majority of patients at entry, the multimer pattern was variable and showed no predictive pattern. Renal dysfunction was common (18%).     

OTTER: The design and development of an intelligent underwater robot

Recent advances in sensing and intelligent control technologies open a whole new dimension in underwater autonomy. However, before truly-capable, autonomous underwater robots can be created for subsea intervention and exploration, many research issues must be first investigated and developed experimentally on testbed platforms.OTTER is an underwater robot designed to be used as a testbed for autonomous technologies. Both OTTER's hardware and software systems are configured to support simultaneous development and testing of different concepts for underwater robotic by independent researchers. A general control-software framework enables common access to all subsystems and avoids the duplication of basic robotic functionality jointly required by all projects. Additionally, the new autonomous technologies enabled by the results of individual research are mutually compatible and can be easily integrated into a single robotic system. Examples of new technologies demonstrated on the OTTER underwater robot include control from a real-time vision-sensing system, coordinated arm/vehicle control, and control from 3D graphical user interfaces.
