Development of a simple microsystems membrane probe card

Presented here are details of the development of a novel membrane integrated circuit (IC) probe card structure based on microsystems technology. The device design allows probing of both solder bumps and pads. A self-limiting sensor was integrated to prolong device lifetime. Comparison with and discussion of the use of modelling is made. Possible enhancements to the probing structure are discussed to improve alignment and measurements. Also shown is data using our microsystems probe card to access a simple IC device. Our device has a contact resistance of less than 0.5 Ω for a force of 0.004 N. A method to implement our probing structure for commercial application and the potential developments which can be made to improve its ease of use are then discussed.     

Partial congenital defect of the left pericardium: angiographic diagnosis and treatment by thoracoscopic pericardiectomy: case report

Twenty-six patients with an intracardiac myxoma underwent surgical resection at our institution from 1977 through 1992. Left atrial myxoma was diagnosed in 22 patients, left ventricular in 1, right atrial in 2, and right ventricular in 1. Six patients were asymptomatic; preoperative symptoms included dyspnea, arrhythmias, embolic episodes, and syncope. The diagnosis was established with transthoracic echocardiography in all cases but one. Surgery was performed in all cases with the aid of cardiopulmonary bypass with moderate hypothermia and cold crystalloid cardioplegia. One patient with a left ventricular myxoma died in a comatose state during the immediate postoperative period. Long-term clinical and echocardiographic evaluation was performed in 19 patients; results were excellent (all the patients were in New York Heart Association functional class I or II), and no recurrences were documented. The clinical characteristics, diagnostic methods, and surgical approach are presented and discussed.     

Ionic transport in amorphous anodic titania stabilised by incorporation of silicon species

Incorporation of silicon species from an alloy substrate into anodic titania is shown to stabilise the structure of the film, facilitating investigation of the ionic transport processes in amorphous titania grown at high efficiency. Thus, an amorphous anodic film developed on a sputtering-deposited Ti-6 at.%Si alloy formed to 100 V in phosphoric acid electrolyte in contrast to a partially crystalline film developed on relatively pure titanium at <20 V. Silicon species, which are immobile and act as marker species in the growing film, are present in the inner 58% of the film thickness. Evidently, the film material forms simultaneously at the film/electrolyte and alloy/film interfaces by co-operative transport of cations and anions, as is usual in amorphous anodic oxides. The phosphate anions incorporated from the electrolyte migrate inward at 0.34 times the rate of O²⁻ ions and hence are present in the outer 62% of the film thickness.     

Social environmental selection as a mediator of gender, ethnic, and personality effects on college student drinking.

Structural equation modeling was used to test the mediational role of social environmental selection on alcohol use in cross-sectional samples of 447 students from a rural state university and 421 students from an urban private university. Results showed that male gender, White ethnicity, and sensation seeking were uniquely associated with greater alcohol use. Mediational analyses indicated that socioenvironmental factors (i.e., Greek involvement, friends' approval of drinking/getting drunk) were positively associated with alcohol use and significantly accounted for parts of the effects of ethnicity and sensation seeking, but not gender, on alcohol use. Results suggest that White students and those high on sensation seeking may drink more heavily in college, in part because they select social environments in which alcohol use is encouraged. Grand theories of personality cannot be integrated.

Comments on the original article "A New Big Five: Fundamental Principles for an Integrative Science of Personality," by Dan P. McAdams and Jennifer L. Pals (see record 2006-03947-002). McAdams and Pals (April 2006) presented a new model to integrate the field of personality psychology. Cultural and evolutionary factors interact with an individual's basic traits, characteristic adaptations, and life narratives, which in turn are linked to roles, demands, and behaviors. The current authors welcome McAdams and Pals's (2006) model for providing a way to integrate much of the previously disparate empirical findings in personality psychology. However, the current authors also think that McAdams and Pals (2006) overstated the inclusiveness of the model, and more generally, the current authors dispute their assertion that the grand theories of personality can be integrated within a single model. Chemokine receptors: structure, function and role in microbial pathogenesis

The chemokine superfamily is composed of at least 20 different leukocyte chemoattractants that act by binding to a family of G protein-coupled receptors. Leukocyte subtypes respond preferentially to unique but overlapping subsets of chemokines as determined by the receptor distribution, yet the receptors appear to signal through a common Gi-type G protein. Since chemokines appear to play major roles in inflammatory pathology, their receptors may be good targets for developing leukocyte selective anti-inflammatory drugs. Two chemokine receptors, CC CKRS and ONCC, function pathologically as cell entry factors respectively for human immunodeficiency virus 1, the cause of AIDS, and Plasmodium vivax, the major cause of malaria.     

Computerized determination of proliferating cell nuclear antigen expression in meningiomas. A comparison with non-automated method

Proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) expression has been proven to be a significant marker of cell proliferation in meningiomas, which correlates with growth rate and, as shown by several authors, possibly provides prognostic information concerning biologic behavior. However, the current method for determining PCNA labeling index (LI) is tedious and time consuming like all the nonautomated methods for evaluating cell kinetics, presenting high interobserver and interlaboratory variability and low reproducibility. In the present study, we introduce a semi-automated computer-assisted image analysis method for determining PCNA LI in 38 meningiomas, in parallel with the current nonautomated method. Image analysis technique permits unbiased cell counting, standardizes the degree of staining intensity and provides instant results. By calculating coefficient of variability, the method proved to be highly reproducible. The correlation between the results provided by the nonautomated and the semiautomated image analysis method showed a high agreement between them, with a correlation coefficient, r, of 0.82. In conclusion, we consider that image analysis contributes to the accuracy, reproducibility, and practicality of PCNA LI determination so that along with other useful parameters this significant marker may serve to predict the clinical behavior in meningiomas.     

Contact dermatitis from cetostearyl alcohol

Emulsifiers are an uncommon cause of allergic contact dermatitis. Five cases of allergic contact dermatitis to cetostearyl alcohol are presented. In all five cases, multiple positive reactions to other allergens were present, usually topical corticosteroid creams.
