The primary aim of this paper is to present results describing in detail the behaviour of ±45° E-glass/MY750 (GRP) tubes, of various wall thicknesses, subjected to equal biaxial tension–compression loading, generated under combined internal pressure and axial compression. The role played by the non-linear lamina shear has also been assessed by comparing various shear stress–strain curves for embedded laminae (extracted from tests on ±45° tubes subjected to circumferential: axial stress ratios SR=1:0, 1:−1 and 2.3:−1) with that of an ‘isolated’ lamina (measured from torsion of 90° tubes). Extracted shear failure strains, for embedded laminae, were more than four fold larger than those measured at ultimate failure for an ‘isolated’ lamina. Soft characteristics were observed in the embedded lamina and these were believed to be due to interaction between early matrix damage initiation (and propagation) and shear. Factors affecting the behaviour of the tubes, such as bulging, scissoring, thermal stresses and stress variation through the thickness are discussed. 相似文献

A new approach for performing FE-shape design sensitivity analyses (DSA) of structural models with both linear elastic and elastoplastic material behaviour is presented. In the formulation of the method the derivation of the FE equilibrium equations is performed analytically leading to various terms. The differentiation of some parts of these terms is determined numerically, therefore the method is semianalytical. The formulation is particularized for isoparametric finite elements for which exact numerical differentiation can be obtained (exact up to round-off error). Examples of some plane stress problems testify that the results of the new method are not dependent either on the size of perturbation of the design variables or on the FE mesh refinement among other factors. 相似文献

A design analysis of a telecentric microchannel relay system developed for use with a smart-pixel-based photonic backplane is presented. The interconnect uses a clustered-window geometry in which optoelectronic device windows are grouped together about the axis of each microchannel. A Gaussian-beam propagation model is used to analyze the trade-off between window size, window density, transistor count per smart pixel, and lenslet ?-number for three cases of window clustering. The results of this analysis show that, with this approach, a window density of 4000 windows/cm(2) is obtained for a window size of 30 μm and a device plane separation of 25 mm. In addition, an optical power model is developed to determine the nominal power requirements of a 32 × 32 smart-pixel array as a function of window size. The power requirements are obtained assuming a complementary metal-oxide semiconductor inverter-amplifier and dual-rail multiple-quantum-well self-electro-optic-effect devices as the receiver stage of the smart pixel. 相似文献

Bone cells, in particular osteoblasts, are capable of communication with each other during bone growth and homeostasis. More recently it has become clear that they also communicate with other cell-types; including chondrocytes in articular cartilage. One way that this process is facilitated is by interstitial fluid movement within the pericellular and extracellular matrices. This stimulus is also an important mechanical signal in skeletal tissues, and is known to generate shear stresses at the micron-scale (known as fluid flow shear stresses (FFSS)). The primary aim of this study was to develop and characterize an in vitro bone–cartilage crosstalk system, to examine the effect of FFSS on these cell types. Specifically, we evaluated the response of osteoblasts and chondrocytes to FFSS and the effect of FFSS-induced soluble factors from the former, on the latter. This system will ultimately be used to help us understand the role of subchondral bone damage in articular cartilage degeneration. We also carried out a comparison of responses between cell lines and primary murine cells in this work. Our findings demonstrate that primary cells produce a more reliable and reproducible response to FFSS. Furthermore we found that at lower magnitudes , direct FFSS produces anabolic responses in both chondrocytes and osteoblasts, whereas higher levels produce more catabolic responses. Finally we show that exposure to osteoblast-derived factors in conditioned media experiments produced similarly catabolic changes in primary chondrocytes. 相似文献

The symmetric self-electrooptic-effect device (S-SEED), a structure consisting of two p-i-n diodes electrically connected in series and acting as an optically bistable set-reset latch, is discussed. Applications and extensions of this device are also discussed. The devices do not require the critical biasing that is common to most optically bistable devices and thus is more useful for system applications. They have been optically cascaded in a photonic ring counter and have been used to perform different NOR, OR, NAND, and AND logic functions. Numerous studies have investigated degradation of individual endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) in lab or natural waters. However, natural variations in water matrices and mixtures of EDCs in the environment may confound analysis of the treatment efficiency. Because chemical based analytical methods cannot represent the combined or synergistic activities between water quality parameters and/or the EDC mixtures at environmentally relevant concentrations (microg L(-1)-ng L(-1)), bioanalytical assessments of residual estrogenic activity in treated water were used to evaluate the performance of the UV based advanced oxidation process for estrogenic contaminants in water. Four EDCs including estradiol (E(2)), ethinyl estradiol (EE(2)), bisphenol-A (BPA) and nonylphenol (NP) were spiked individually or as a mixture at mug L(-1)-ng L(-1) in laboratory or natural river water. The removal rates of estrogenic activity were quantitatively evaluated by in vitro yeast estrogen screen (YES) and in vivo Vitellogenin (VTG) assays with Japanese medaka fish (Oryzias latipes). UV in combination with 10 ppm H(2)O(2) as an oxidation process was capable of decreasing in vitro and in vivo estrogenic activity, however, in vivo estrogenic activity of the EDC mixture in natural water was not completely removed at UV fluence up to 2000 mJ cm(-2). The removal rates of in vitro estrogenic activity of the EDC mixtures were lower than those observed for single compounds, and slower in natural waters, likely due to lower steady-state concentrations of hydroxyl radicals (*OH) in the presence of *OH scavengers from the water matrix and EDC mixture. 相似文献

This paper investigates cognitive and physiological precursors of orthostatic panic (OP), that is, panic upon standing, which is a key complaint among traumatized Cambodian refugees. Prior research links OP to hypotension (lower blood pressure) and catastrophic cognitions. A clinical sample of 102 Cambodian refugees were assessed for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), recent OP attacks, and anticipatory anxiety before engaging in an orthostatic challenge (OC) task during which they were monitored for blood pressure. After the task, they were assessed for OC-induced culture-related catastrophic cognitions, flashbacks, and panic attacks. We found that participants with recent OP (n = 60) had more PTSD, greater anticipatory anxiety before the OC, a larger drop in systolic blood pressure during the OC, more OC-induced catastrophic cognitions and flashbacks, and more severe OC-induced panic attack symptoms. Regression models showed that the severity of OC-induced panic symptoms was predicted by the magnitude of SBP drop and mediated by more severe catastrophic cognitions and flashbacks. Implications of the findings for cross-cultural psychopathology research and the treatment of both panic and PTSD in Cambodian refugees are discussed.
