Two Caribbean hair sheep breeds, the St. Croix (SC) and Barbados Blackbelly (BB), are found in the United States, and the SC has led to the development of the Katahdin (K), a synthetic breed of hair sheep. These breeds have mature ewe BW ranging from 32 to 54 kg (for BB and SC) and from 55 to 73 kg (K). Hair sheep and hair sheep crosses have lower rectal temperatures and respiration rates than wool breeds and a lower DMI and water intake. There are indications of increased resistance to internal parasites in hair sheep. Although hair sheep are seasonal breeders under U.S. photoperiodic conditions, they tend to perform better under accelerated lambing systems than traditional wool breeds. Fertility, prolificacy, and lamb survival is high in BB and SC, but hair x wool crossbred ewes tend to have a higher level of fertility than hair and wool parent breeds. Ewe productivity is also higher in hair x wool crosses than in wool crosses, particularly when adjusted for ewe BW or under accelerated lambing systems. Hair sheep have a lower ADG and intake of high-energy diets, as well as a lower gain/feed ratio, than wool breeds. Growth rates tend to be higher in SC than in BB. Differences in carcass characteristics are inconsistent between hair and wool breeds. Production characteristics of hair sheep, particularly hair x wool crosses, make them suitable for low-input, sustainable production systems that do not require high growth rates and large carcasses. There is a need to preserve the existing U.S. hair sheep germplasm base in support of such systems.  相似文献

Development of the new drugs often involves the screening of compound libraries for biological activity. Currently, the biologically active component can only be identified if either a pure compound is being tested or if the components of a mixture are spatially separated, for example, on beads. Here, we present an NMR technique based on the transferred nuclear Overhauser effect (transfer NOE) that allows identification and structural characterization of biologically active molecules from a mixture. As an example we demonstrate that from mixtures of oligosaccharides only alpha-L-Fuc-(1-->6)-beta-D-GlcNAc-OMe binds to Aleuria aurantia agglutinin. The sign of transferred NOEs is opposite to NOEs of small molecules that do not bind to the protein and, thus, an unequivocal identification of molecules with binding activity is possible. Normally, the selection of bound ligands is further facilitated in that the absolute intensity of transfer NOEs is much greater than that of NOEs of non-binding molecules. In addition, transfer NOEs provide information on the three-dimensional structure of the ligands in the bound state. Therefore, measuring transfer NOEs of mixtures of small molecules in the presence of large molecules, like proteins, should significantly enhance the options for screening mixtures of compounds for biological activity.  相似文献

We have shown that normal and human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16 immortalized human foreskin keratinocytes are growth inhibited by tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), whereas HPV-18- and SV40-immortalized keratinocytes are resistant to this cytokine (1). In this report, we investigated the expression of mitotic regulatory proteins, such as cyclin A, cyclin B, and p34cdc2. After exposure to TNF-alpha, normal and HPV-16-immortalized cells exhibited a dramatic decrease in the expression of these proteins. In contrast, no alteration in the levels of these proteins was observed after treatment of the resistant cell lines, as well as two HPV-positive cervical carcinoma cell lines. Expression of cyclin E does not seem to be modulated by TNF-alpha in any of the cells tested. On the other hand, cyclin D1, expression is slightly increased in normal keratinocytes and in the HPV-16-immortalized cells, whereas no alteration was observed in the HPV-18-transfected cells. The phosphorylation state of pRb correlated with cell growth; sensitive cells, which accumulate in G0-G1, after exposure to TNF-alpha, exhibited an accumulation of hypophosphorylated pRb, whereas no effect on pRb phosphorylation was observed for HPV-18-immortalized cells. These results clearly correlate with TNF-alpha-induced growth arrest in G0-G1.  相似文献

The traveling-wave energy, which multiply diffracts on a straight thin wire, is represented as a sum of terms, each with a distinct physical meaning, that can be individually examined in the time domain. Expressions for each scattering mechanism on a straight thin wire are cast in the form of four basic electromagnetic wave concepts: diffraction, attachment, launch, and reflection. Using the basic mechanisms from P.Ya. Ufimtsev (1962), each of the scattering mechanisms is included into the total scattered field for the straight thin wire. Scattering as a function of angle and frequency is then compared to the moment-method solution. These analytic expressions are then extended to a lossy wire with a simple approximate modification using the propagation velocity on the wire as derived from the Sommerfeld wave on a straight lossy wire. Both the perfectly conducting and lossy wire solutions are compared to moment-method results, and excellent agreement is found. As is common with asymptotic solutions, when the electrical length of wire is smaller than 0.2 λ the results lose accuracy. The expressions modified to approximate the scattering for the lossy thin wire yield excellent agreement even for lossy wires where the wire radius is on the order of skin depth  相似文献

Although accepted surgical techniques for peripheral nerve repair remain largely unchanged over the past three decades, much progress has been made toward understanding the mechanisms involved in nerve regeneration, and consequently toward providing adjunctive measures to enhance this regenerative process. We present a comprehensive review of the significant advances made in several aspects of nerve repair over the past decade, and particularly the past few years, and provide a few examples of facial nerve repair using the standard neurorrhaphy techniques recommended today. Several conclusions were drawn after thorough review of the literature. Early repair of injured nerves is preferred, and there appears to be no benefit to waiting for 3 weeks. Severed nerves should be repaired with monofilament 9-0 nylon suture placed in epineurial fashion. Fibrin glue confers no benefit in reattaching injured nerves. Likewise, theoretical advantages of laser neurorrhaphy have not resulted in improved nerve regeneration. Finally, trophic factors, such as apolipoproteins and nerve growth factor, and tubulization both appear to offer promise for future experimental and clinical progress in nerve repair. However, further work must be done to prove their efficacy.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate ERCP and CT findings of ectopic drainage of the common bile duct into the duodenal bulb. CONCLUSION: Although rare, the diagnosis of ectopic drainage of the common bile duct into the duodenal bulb is important to prevent inadvertent damage during biliary tract or gastric surgery and to clarify the cause of chronic peptic ulcers.  相似文献
