Fertilization in vitro. A review over the medical indications and suggestion to unified guidelines for public fertility clinics in Denmark

Medical indications for in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET) internationally and in Denmark are reviewed. Reports from large international centres document that tubal infertility, unexplained infertility, endometriosis and male infertility are equally good indications for IVF. Traditionally, tubal infertility has been the only medical indication qualifying for IVF treatment within the National Health Service in Denmark. Thus, in this country, couples with unexplained and male infertility and with endometriosis have to pay up to 25,000 D.Kr. per IVF-ET treatment in private fertility clinics. Since there is no scientific basis for this discrimination, it is urged that the present rules are changed, so that couples with unexplained and male infertility and endometriosis are also allowed IVF treatment free of charge in the public fertility clinics.     

Thin-gate oxides prepared by pure water anodization followed byrapid thermal densification

Anodic oxidation at room temperature with pure deionized water as electrolyte and then followed by high-temperature rapid thermal densification was used to prepare high breakdown endurance thin-gate oxides with thicknesses of about 50 Å. It was observed that the oxides prepared by anodic oxidation followed by rapid thermal densification (AOD) show better electrical characteristics than those grown by rapid thermal oxidation (RTO) only. The AOD oxides have a very low midgap interface trap density, Ditm, of smaller than 1×10¹⁰ eV^-1 cm^-2 and negative effective oxide trapped charge. From the smaller leakage currents observed during staircase ramp voltage time-zero dielectric breakdown (TZDB) and constant field time-dependent dielectric breakdown (TDDB) testings, it is supposed that the uniform interfacial property and the pretrapped negative charges in AOD oxides are responsible for the improved characteristics     

Experimental and analytical studies of innovative prestressed concrete box-girder bridges

This paper presents experimental and analytical results of four scaled prestressed concrete box-girder bridges with corrugated steel webs. The location of prestressing strands at both ends of the specimens and the thickness of end diaphragms are the two major parameters. Based on the experimental results of all four specimens, their seismic behavior is critically examined, including hysteretic loops, ductility factor, dissipated energy, and failure mode, etc. It was found that both the thickness of end diaphragms and the location of prestressing strands at both ends of the specimens are insignificant when the specimens failed at the mid-span due to concrete crushing, and the proposed analytical model can be used to predict the load-displacement relationship of such bridges.     

Acute bilateral amaurosis in sphenoid empyema caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae

PATIENT: A 14-year-old boy suffered from an acute bilateral blindness which occurred in 24-h time, accompanied by headache and raised temperature, with inconspicuous optic nerve head and fundus. After diagnosis of empyema with magnet resonance tomography (MRT) the sphenoid sinus was fenestrated and streptococcus pneumoniae isolated. Liquor and serology being inconspicuous, there was no evidence of leucaemic or autoimmune disease, intoxication or intracranial tumor. CLINICAL COURSE: The condition of the patient improved under systemic antibiotic therapy. The bilateral amaurosis remained and opticus atrophy developed. CONCLUSION: A bilateral amaurosis with descending opticus atrophy as a consequence of a sphenoiditis and spreading inflammation to the meninges and the optic nerve in the area of the chiasm is a rare event. The imaging technique of the MRT offers new opportunities for an early and more pointed diagnosis and therapy.     

Scenario normalization techniques - inline stepper coordinator design

In this paper, the scenario normalization technique is addressed, which is very useful in the context of generic equipment control, where an equipment-control system (ECS) is to control several pieces of equipment, possibly of different types. This paper begins with a background introduction to a photolithographic cell and the concept of generic equipment control adopted in semiconductor fabs. The concept of message modulation that translates in semantics context the sequence flows between the high-level ECS and the low-level equipment is presented. The main idea relies on the operational scenarios modeling by the sequence diagram; message translation based on semantics analysis; the derivation of production rules and the implementation of them on an event-triggering platform. Scenarios, thus obtained and presented to the high-level ECS by the coordinator, are then in compliance with the normalized scenario as required by the generic equipment controller. The significance of the proposed normalization techniques has the following implication: when different equipment are included in a cell operation, it is not necessary to rewrite control programs but to add relatively simpler transformation sequences enabling the use of the standard ECS function. From the control point of view, the controlled systems of stepper and track can be modeled as discrete event dynamic ones if operation coordination is considered.     

The base current degradation of poly-emitter BJTs under AC stress

A simple model for the analysis of the ac stress effect in poly-emitter bipolar transistors is presented. Apart from the reverse-bias induced hot-carrier effects, the forward-bias recovery effect is a key factor under ac stress, it obviously suppresses the base current degradation of the device which is caused during the reverse-bias periods. In this work, we derived the relationship between the excess base current and the stress time for different ac stress conditions. This model is verified with experimental results.<>     

Histomorphometric study in children with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome

There is agreement on the clinical diagnostic criteria for acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (AIDP/GBS) however, there is lack of consensus for detection of demyelination. In order to critically evaluate the prevailing criteria, sixty-six patients who fulfilled NINCDS criteria and had typical features of GBS were studied for electrophysiological abnormalities of peripheral nerves by using standard methods (median, common peroneal, sural and ulnar) between 1 to 12 weeks after the onset of symptoms. The commonest abnormality on motor nerve conduction study was prolonged distal latency (75%-83%) followed by reduction in CMAP amplitude (63%-82%), decreased velocity (48%-62%), conduction block (17%-39%) and f-wave abnormalities (37.8%-59%). Sensory conduction abnormalities were detected in over 20% of median, 25% of ulnar and 33% of sural nerves. All the patients had abnormality of at least two motor conduction parameters in one nerve when values beyond 2 SD of the mean were considered abnormal and over 70% of patients had three abnormalities in two nerves or two abnormalities in three nerves. Comparison with the prevailing criteria for demyelination revealed that the number of patients fulfilling them varied widely: Albers et al. (1985): 74.2%, Albers et al. (1989): 40.9% and Cornblath: 30.3%. We believe that the current criteria for detection of demyelination in acute neuropathy are too strict, underestimate the underlying pathology in GBS and need reassessment.
