In many respects international sportsmen are trendsetters for the behaviour of recreational sportsmen. For this reason the attitude of international hockey players towards mouth protectors was studied. The possession and use of mouth protectors vary markedly between different countries. The incidence of dental-facial traumas among international field hockey players is high; 54% had sustained injuries necessitating a visit to a physician and/or a dentist. Of these victims 20% sustained serious dental damage at least once (women 16% and men 22%). Only 20% of the international players wear a mouth protector consistently during training and matches. Women use the apparatus almost twice as much as men. The main argument in rejecting a mouth protector is that it is not felt to be necessary.  相似文献

Summary Impairment of skeletal muscle function is the common feature of distinct clinical forms of glycogenosis type II. In the present study, muscle cultures from different patients were used to investigate the cause of clinical heterogeneity and the feasibility of enzyme replacement therapy. The activity of acid -glucosidase appears to be the primary factor in determining the extent of lysosomal glycogen storage in muscle, and thereby the clinical severity of the disease. Neutral -glucosidases do not seem influencial. Correction of the enzymatic defect was achieved in skeletal muscle cultures from patients by administration of a high-uptake form of acid -glucosidase, purified from human urine. The enzyme reaches the lysosomes, including the glycogen storage vacuoles, and the lysosomal glycogen content is reduced to control level. In normal muscle cells 20% of the total cellular glycogen pool is segregated in lysosomal compartments. This percentage is higher than in fibroblasts, which may partly explain why muscles are more prone to store glycogen. The relevance of this study for enzyme therapy is discussed.  相似文献

The male partners of 20 women with human papilloma virus (HPV) infection (subtypes 6, 11, 16, and 18) were studied. These men were unsuspecting and allowed investigation "for scientific reasons" in the context of the abnormal findings in their female partners. Peniscopy (study of the penis with a colposcope) was abnormal in 17 cases. In the cytologic-brush preparations of the urethra, hyperkeratosis (visualized with the modified Papanicolaou technique) occurred in all cases, but koilocytosis in only one. Both urothelial cells and squamous cells in the urethral samples were positive for HPV, as shown in the immunocytochemistry. In the histologic sections taken from flat lesions there was hyperkeratosis, dyskeratosis, and abnormal nuclear maturation. The authors concluded that, using simple techniques, subtle disturbances in maturation of nuclei and cytoplasm can be established in penile epithelium of these sexual partners. Similar changes are established in other HPV lesions. It seems likely that a significant proportion of the male population is infected in countries were HPV an important factor in cervical carcinogenesis.  相似文献

In this paper it is demonstrated how the optimum composition of a mixture for direct compression consisting of -lactose monohydrate, roller-dried -lactose and microcrystalline cellulose can be found using a systematic optimization technique. The experiments were chosen according to a simplex lattice design. The results of these experiments were used to fit a mathematical model, which then can predict the properties of all possible mixture compositions and enables a graphic representation of these properties in the form of contour plots. At a level of 4% the effect of three disintegrants (sodium starch glycolate, croscarmellose sodium and crospovidone) on the properties of the tablets compressed from these filler-binders, was evaluated by superimposing the contour plots of the different tablet responses. It was found that all the disintegrants used were effective in this combination of filler-binders. In order to evaluate drug dissolution rate an extra experiment with crospovidone as the disintegrant was performed, in which oxazepam was used as a test drug.  相似文献

The consolidation and compaction behaviour of sieve fractions of crystalline -lactose monohydrate were studied. From mercury porosimetry measurements tablet pore surface areas were derived. At a certain compaction load it appeared that tablets compressed from small particles were generally stronger and showed a larger surface area than compacts prepared from coarse sieve fractions. By plotting compact strength against pore surface area, a unique linear relationship was obtained. From these results it can be concluded that the actual tablet surface area, being a function of both the initial particle size and applied compaction pressure, is responsible for the compact strength.  相似文献

Most cases of hairy-cell leukaemia (HCL) involve proliferations of neoplastic B lymphocytes. In rare cases, M-proteins or osteolytic lesions have been documented in patients with HCL. In this study two patients with typical HCL are reported in whom both paraproteinaemia and osteolytic lesions of the femoral neck developed. In one of the patients the production of the M-protein by hairy cells could be established. In the other patient, at autopsy no signs of myeloma were found. The hairy cells from inside the osteolytic lesion had the same immunological phenotype as hairy cells from the peripheral blood, the spleen, and other parts of the bone marrow. These cases once more confirm the B-cell nature of many cases of HCL, and show that hairy cells can have functional capacities usually attributed to much more mature B lymphocytes, i.e. plasma cells.  相似文献

We present a time-saving and objective flow cytometric immunofluorescence assay for the simultaneous detection of antibodies against platelets, granulocytes or lymphocytes using a reconstituted mixture of these cell populations. Platelets, granulocytes and lymphocytes could be distinguished on the basis of their forward (FSC) and sideways (SSC) light scattering properties plotted on scales of 4 log orders. After setting FSC/SSC gates around the platelets, granulocytes and lymphocytes, the reactivity of the sera with the cell populations was determined by histogram analyses of immunofluorescence for each gate. The flow cytometric assay of reconstituted cell mixtures showed a strong, positive correlation with a reference microscopic immunofluorescence assay of separate cell suspensions. The reproducible procedures for the isolation and staining of the cells and the electronic stability of the flow cytometer permitted the use of the same gate and marker settings throughout the experiments. Consequently, the entire analysis of data stored in list mode could be performed using a keystroke, so that time consuming and subjective manual analyses were avoided.  相似文献

The effect of dose and schedule of continuous i.v. rIL-2 infusions on leucocyte subset counts, activation status of CD56+CD3- natural killer (NK) and CD3+ T lymphocytes, and cytolytic activities of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) was studied. A single 4-day course of rIL-2 in escalating doses (0.9-11.5 x 10(6) U/m2 per day) was given to 18 patients with various types of metastatic cancer. The serum IL-2 concentration during rIL-2 therapy ranged between 23 and 64 U/ml and was proportional to the administered rIL-2 dose, as was the rebound lymphocytosis following therapy. Before therapy, the CD56+CD3- NK cells expressed low levels of the p75 chain of the IL-2 receptor (IL-2R) and virtually no IL-2R(p55). Most CD3+ T cells were IL-2R(p55-,p75-). Between 2 and 4 days following therapy, i.e. at the time of lymphocytosis, the percentage of CD56+,CD3- NK cells among the lymphocytes had increased proportional to the administered rIL-2 dose. The levels of IL-2R(p75) expression by the CD56+,CD3- NK cells had increased. The percentages of CD3+ T cells expressing IL-2R(p55), HLA-DR and CD45RO had increased proportional to the administered rIL-2 dose. The level of lymphokine- activated killer (LAK) activity against Daudi cells was also positively correlated with rIL-2 dose. Subsequently, seven patients received 4-weekly cycles of rIL-2 (2.9-4.4 x 10(6) U/m2 per day) during 4 consecutive weeks. This schedule led to marked increments in lymphocyte and eosinophil counts, and to increased cytolytic activities compared with pretreatment. We conclude that CD56+,CD3- NK and CD3+ T cells are activated differentially by continuous i.v. rIL-2 proportional to dose and duration of treatment.  相似文献
