Spatial and temporal variations in vegetation dielectric properties strongly influence the microwave backscatter characteristics of forested landscapes. This paper examines the relationship between xylem tissue dielectric constant, xylem sap flux density, and xylem sap chemical composition as measured in the stems of two Norway Spruce (Picea abies [L.] Karst.) trees in the Fichtelgebirge region of Northern Bavaria, Germany. Dielectric constant and xylem sap flux were monitored continuously from June through October 1995, at several heights along the tree trunks. At the end of the measurement series, each tree was harvested, and its xylem sap extracted and analyzed to determine the concentrations of amino acids and cations. Results show that the sap flux density was correlated with vapor pressure deficit (VPD) at all heights in the stem. In contrast, the xylem tissue dielectric constant is influenced by VPD but can exhibit a significant temporal lag relative to changes in VPD. This lag varies with position along the tree trunk. The temporal variability of the dielectric constant is compared with both trees at several positions along the tree trunks. Results of xylem sap chemical analysis are presented. We show that spatial and temporal variability in the xylem tissue dielectric constant is influenced not only by water content, but by variations in xylem sap chemistry as well. This has important implications for microwave remote sensing of forested landscapes, as useful information may be acquired regarding stand physiology and water relations and where variations in dielectric properties within individual trees and across geographic areas can be significant error sources for forest inventory mapping.  相似文献

A vibrating reed magnetometer with high sensitivity is constructed. Using optical signal pickup, modified excitation coils, and an acoustical reference excitation system, the high sensitivity of former constructions is combined with the detection of the magnetization component perpendicular to the bias field H. The calibration procedure providing increased reliability is simplified and allows hysteresis measurements with the magnetic easy axis of the sample oriented at an arbitrary angle with respect to H. The bipolar electric fatigue behaviour of antiferroelectric ceramics with the composition of Pb0.88Ba0.10La0.02(Zr0.55Sn0.35Ti0.10)O3 was investigated under various cycling fields. The material exhibits a degradation in the maximum field induced strain, a diffuse AFE-FE phase transition and an enhancement in the diffusion character of the FE-AFE phase transition due to electric cycling. Those variations increase with cycle number, indicating a logarithmic fatigue up to 108 cycles. There is no indication for the variations to be recovered, and the symmetry of the negative and positive parts of the strain hysteresis loops still remains. Higher cycling field results in a stronger deterioration of the maximum field induced strain and a larger extent of diffusion in AFE-FE and FE-AFE phase transitions. The normalized maximum strain shows nearly the same scale of degradation when the materials are cycled at various electric fields. After a heat treatment at 500°C for 1 h, the variations in the AFE-FE and FE-AFE phase transition due to cycling disappear, whereas the maximum strain resumes almost to its original value. Electrochemical variations are considered to contribute to the main fatigue mechanism for the material under investigation.  相似文献

Certain bacterial immunostimulatory (i.s.) DNA sequences containing unmethylated CpG motifs stimulate antigen-presenting cells (APC) to express a full complement of costimulatory molecules and to produce cytokines including interleukin (IL)-12 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha. While IL-12 is key to their T helper cell (Th)1-promoting adjuvant activity, secretion of toxic levels of TNF-alpha is harmful in that it promotes toxic shock. Given the beneficial as well as harmful consequences of i.s. DNA, we investigated the possibility of identifying DNA sequences, i.e. CpG oligodeoxynucleotides (ODN) which differentially activate IL-12 versus TNF-alpha cytokine production in APC. Here, we describe an i.s. DNA sequence with these characteristics. While its potential to induce IL-12 is preserved, its ability to trigger TNF-alpha release is strongly curtailed both in vitro and in vivo. I.s. DNA could be segregated into lethal and non-lethal in a mouse toxic shock model. The non-toxic i.s. DNA was useful as an adjuvant, thus allowing cytotoxic T cell responses to the soluble protein ovalbumin and conferring a resistant Th 1 phenotype to BALB/c mice lethally infected with Leishmania major. This i.s. CpG motif may thus be prototypic for a useful immunostimulating DNA sequence that lacks harmful side effects.  相似文献

The efficiency of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was compared with that of culture for detection of Ureaplasma urealyticum and Mycoplasma hominis in 726 clinical specimens comprising 189 gynecological samples, 362 urological samples, and 175 samples from newborn infants. The sensitivity of PCR versus culture was 95% for both organisms, while the sensitivity of culture versus PCR was 91% for Ureaplasma urealyticum and 84% for Mycoplasma hominis. Furthermore, PCR tests were faster than culture tests, allowing the time to diagnosis to be reduced from two to five days to 24 h.  相似文献

Hot electron noise measurements are performed in Si doped Alx Ga1-xAs n+nn+ devices, for three different Al concentrations: x=0.15, 0.2, 0.25. Noise temperatures are obtained using a pulsed measurement technique as functions of electric field and frequency. Longitudinal diffusion coefficients D(E) are deduced at 4 GHz. Results are analyzed through the scattering mechanisms which greatly affect the electron velocity properties of AlxGa1-xAs materials. Comparisons with n+ nn+ GaAs devices are made  相似文献
