Synthesis and evaluation of some functionalized difuran diesters as plasticizers for PVC

Butyl, hexyl, and 2-ethylhexyl diesters of 1,1-bis(5-carboxyl-2-furyl)-2,2-dichloroethene, hexyl and 2-ethylhexyl diesters of 1,1-bis(5-carboxyl-2-furyl) ketone, and the hexyl diester of 1,1-bis(5-carboxyl-2-furyl)methane were synthesized from furfural and evaluated for their plasticizing abilities toward PVC, by the application of dynamic mechanical thermal analysis and [di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate] as a standard of reference. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Laparoscopic operation of a Morgagni hernia

Morgagni hernias are the least common form of diaphragmatic hernias. Although they are congenital, most of them are not diagnosed until later in life. The indication for surgery is based on the patient's symptoms or on the radiological evidence of incarcerated tissue, and until quite recently involved a laparotomy or thoracotomy. Laparoscopy not only permits the suspected diagnosis to be confirmed--which is otherwise often difficult--but also makes it possible to close the hernia site by suturing. For improved security, the hernia site is augmented by fixing in place a non-absorbable mesh. The operative technique employed is described.     

Review of the Robotica software package for robotic manipulators

Robotica is a computer-aided design package for robotic nmanipulators developed at the Coordinated Science Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. The package is a collection of function definitions for the Mathematica symbolic mathematics program. Robotica can be used either with an X- Windows graphical user interface (GUI) on a Sun Workstation or as an included function definition file within Mathematica. The primary feature of Robotica is the ability to compute, symbolically or numerically, the kinematic and dynamic equations of arbitrary robot systems utilizing the standard Denevit-Hartenburg (DH) kinematic convention. Robotica also provides the ability to visualize these arbitrary manipulators using the X- Windows graphical interface to the Mathematica graphics routines. The paper looks at the usage of Robotica at the Air Force Institute of Technology, comments on the features of Robotica, and needs for improvement and suggestions for future development     

The influence of raw material characteristics on the industrial pelletizing process and pellet quality

Industrial pelletizing of sawdust was carried out as a designed experiment in the factors: sawdust moisture content, fractions of fresh pine, stored pine and spruce. The process parameters and response variables were energy consumption, pellet flow rate, pellet bulk density, durability and moisture content. The final data consisted of twelve industrial scale runs. Because of the many response variables, data evaluation was by principal component analysis of a 12 × 9 data matrix. The two principal component model showed a clustering of samples, with a good reproducibility of the center points. It also showed a positive correlation of energy consumption, bulk density and durability all negatively correlated to flow rate and moisture content. The stored pine was more related to high durability and bulk density. The role of the spruce fraction was unclear. The design matrix, augmented with the process parameters was a 12 × 6 matrix. Partial least squares regression showed excellent results for pellet moisture content and bulk density. The model for durability was promising. A 12 × 21 data matrix of fatty- and resin acid concentrations measured by GC–MS showed the differences between fresh and stored pine very clearly. The influence of the spruce fraction was less clear. However, the influence of the fatty- and resin acids on the pelletizing process could not be confirmed, indicating that other differences between fresh and stored pine sawdust have to be investigated. This work shows that it is possible to design the pelletizing process for moderate energy consumption and high pellet quality.     

High yield formation of carbon nanotubes using a rotating cathode in open air

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been synthesized using the arc discharge method with a rotating graphite disc as the cathode. Arcing was carried out in open air and without the use of catalysts. The current density was maintained constant through out the experiment, while, the rate of rotation of the cathode and atmosphere under which arcing was carried out were changed during experimentation. Characterization of the samples produced indicates that rotation of the cathode has a significant impact on the quality and yield of the process. It is proposed that rotation of the cathode drags plasma formed between two electrodes away from high temperature region. This results in a sudden quenching of the reactive plasma. The time available for nucleation and growth phenomena is significantly reduced and thus leads to the formation of highly graphitic multi walled CNTs (yield 60%) and traces of double walled CNTs.     

Forgotten pioneers of color order. Part I: Gaspard Grégoire (1751–1846)

Some 100 years before Albert Munsell developed his color order system, French silk merchant and inventor of a technology for producing works of art in silk velours, Gaspard Grégoire, introduced a color order system based on the color attributes hue, (relative) chroma, and lightness. Conceived in the mid‐1780s, an atlas with 1350 samples was produced before 1813 and found use in French Royal manufacturing operations and educational institutions. It was followed a few years later by one with 343 samples. Grégoire's work was subsequently overshadowed by Michel‐Eugene Chevreul's more complicated and less intuitive hemispherical system of 1839. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fortschritte in der Adsorptionstechnologie

The high purchasing price of organic solvents has stimulated interest in their recovery from emissions. While conventional adsorption units for recovery of monosolvents have been in industrial use for some 70 years, it has hitherto proved impossible to costeffectively desorb solvent fractions sufficiently pure for direct use in the case of emissions of mixtures. The solvent mixtures obtained by desorption had to be separated in expensive rectification steps, with the high costs thus precluding widespread use of adsorption for recovery projects in the chemical and printing industries. After conclusion of development work performed in the USA and Germany over a period of 10 years, it is now possible to control the adsorption steps in such a way that the purities necessary for reutilisation of the individual solvent fractions can be attained without the aid of rectification steps.     

Periodontal management of gingival overgrowth in the heart transplant patient: a case report

Heart transplant patients take several medications that could affect their periodontal health. Gingival overgrowth associated with cyclosporin (immunosuppressant agent) and nifedipine (calcium channel blocker) is well documented. Candidal infections often develop because of immune suppression. This report describes the clinical and histopathological changes in the gingival tissues of a heart transplant patient and their management. The gingival tissues exhibited pronounced enlargement. The gingivae were lobulated, and the surface of the lobulations was pebbly and granular. Biopsies showed lobules of fibrous connective tissue covered by stratified squamous epithelium. The outer surfaces were dotted with numerous smaller papillations. Candidal hyphae were present in the superficial layers of the epithelium. The extensive papillary lesions appear to be related to candidiasis and constitute a condition which is best designated as papillary stomatitis. Hyperplastic gingival tissues were excised, and the patient was placed on periodic maintenance. One-year postoperative follow-up showed minor gingival growth.
