Bamboo strips treated with caustic solutions of different concentrations, e.g., 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, and 50%, were subjected to mechanical testing giving stresses on tensile strength, percent elongation at break, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and toughness. The change in average density was ?15%, and the weight loss value shows a maximum of 21.94% at 50% alkali treatment. The mechanical properties of bamboo strips increase steadily with increasing concentration of caustic soda, showing a comparable increased value at 15 and 20%, and then exhibiting a gradual fall. The percent elongation at break corroborates these observations showing a continuous decreasing trend. The properties under investigation exhibit a clear transition in between 15 and 20% alkali concentration. The morphology of strips was studied by scanning electron microscope and polarizing light microscope. The crystal structure of both untreated and treated strips was compared by XRD analysis. In both cases, the breakdown of the crystal structures of the cellulose fibers and the recrystallization or reorientation of the degraded chains that are devoid of hemicellulose are quite apparent. However, at a very high concentration (to the extent of 25%) the breakdown of structure predominates much more over the reorientation or recrystallization. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Semi1 and semi2 interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) of PVC and in situ formed PMMA have been synthesized using diallyl phthalate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the crosslinkers of PVC and PMMA, respectively. These two types of IPNs have been compared w.r.t their physical, mechanical, and thermal properties and an endeavor has been made to find a correlation of these properties with the morphology generated in these systems. The semi1 IPNs displayed a decrease in their mechanical parameters and the physical properties as well, while in contrast, the semi2 IPNs exhibited a marginal increase in the corresponding values after an initial drop upto about 15% of crosslinked PMMA incorporation when compared to the crosslinked PVC in the case of semi1 IPN and linear PVC in the case of semi2 IPN. The various samples of semi1 and semi2 IPNs showed a two‐stage degradation typical of PVC, while confirming the increased stability with the samples having higher percentages of PMMA. The influence of crosslinking of the major matrix in semi1 IPN was almost counterbalanced by the influence of crosslinking in the dispersed PMMA phase in the case of semi2 IPN. The softening characteristics as detected by the extent of penetration of the probe, as has been detected by thermomechanical analysis, are in conformity with their mechanicals. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In an attempt to toughen the epoxy resin matrix for fiber-reinforced composite applications, a chemical modification procedure of a commercially available bisphenol-A-based epoxy resin using reactive liquid rubber HTBN [hydroxy-terminated poly(butadiene-co-acrylonitrile)] and TDI (tolylene diisocyanate) is described. The progress of the reaction and the structural changes during modification process are studied using IR spectroscopy, viscosity data, and chemical analysis (epoxy value determination). The studies support the proposition that TDI acts as a coupling agent between the epoxy and HTBN, forming a urethane linkage with the former and an oxazolidone ring with the latter. The chemical reactions that possibly take place during the modification are discussed.  相似文献

Researchers have identified network effects as one of the major drivers for the adoption and diffusion of household technologies. However, the mechanisms and social contexts through which network effects induce technology adoption are unclear. In this paper, we investigate the adoption of household computers using the dataset from the 1989-2003 Computer and Internet Supplement to the Current Population Surveys (CPS). We argue that social influence and learning play a dominant role in inducing the adoption of home computers, and workplaces and schools are important channels through which network effects take place. We find that recent adopters have a stronger impact than distant adopters on future computer adoptions. When the adoption rate is low, channels play a more important role, but their effects diminish as the adoption rate grows. We also find that diffusion channels are more effective for first-time adoption than for repeat purchases. Overall, our study provides important theoretical, policy, and managerial implications.  相似文献

Two different varieties of Si3N4 powders were used to prepare SiAlON ceramics. 100% β-Si3N4 was used from refractory grade powders (B1) and another purer 98% α-Si3N4 (50A) powder was used to prepare the SiAlON samples. Since SiC + SiAlON composites reportedly perform better, batches were prepared with 15% SiC addition to the refractory powders (B1) and 17.5% SiC was added to the other SiAlON composition (50A). The samples were gas pressure sintered at 1840 °C and at 22 bar with 1 h dwelling time. Thereby, we could achieve 97–98% theoretical density. The hardness was recorded 14–17 GPa while fracture toughness varied from 4.3 to 5 MPa m1/2. Fretting experiments showed initial running-in period of 300 cycles for all the tribo-couples. After which, the steady state coefficient of frictions (COF) were achieved. Steel ball of 10 mm diameter, fretting against 50A composition, showed 0.6 average steady state COF while the same composition while fretting against alumina ball of the same diameter, showed 0.57 average steady state COF. Results have been compared with SiAlON composition derived from refractory powder (B1) and found that the 50A composition performs better under identical test conditions. Moreover, cytocompatibility study also suggests that the investigated 50A composition can be used as substrate to support cell adhesion and proliferation of L929 mouse fibroblast cell lines whereas B1 composition derived from refractory powders are toxic in nature.  相似文献

Aluminum was electrodeposited from two different ionic liquid electrolytes namely; 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolicum chloride and AlCl3 (EMIC–AlCl3) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BMIC–AlCl3) at 90 ± 2 °C. Nodular morphology of aluminum was obtained at the copper substrate. To evaluate the reaction mechanism, chronoamperometric study was adopted. From the chronoamperometric analysis, it was observed that the reaction was controlled by instantaneous three-dimensional diffusion process. The diffusion coefficient (D) of Al2C7 was found to be 5.2–6.6 × 10−11 m2 s−1 and 2.2 × 10−11 m2 s−1 for EMIC–AlCl3 and BMIC–AlCl3 ionic liquid electrolytes, respectively. The nuclei density of electrodeposited aluminum on the copper was also confirmed by scanning electron microscope wherein uniformly distributed aluminum nodules were observed.  相似文献

Polymer gels undergoing the oscillating Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction exhibit an autonomous, periodic swelling and deswelling, where the mechanical oscillations are driven by the chemical reaction within the polymer network. Using computer simulations, we show that these BZ gels can undergo a form of auto-chemotaxis, enabling the gels to spontaneously move in response to self-generated chemical gradients. Focusing on four millimeter-sized pieces of these BZ gels, we show that the pieces can organize into self-rotating clusters that resemble a moving pinwheel or gear. By analyzing the factors that promote the formation of a single self-rotating cluster, we attempt to design systems of multiple, interacting gears. We show that light, which suppresses the oscillations of the gels, can be harnessed to promote the formation of two self-rotating clusters. These studies point to a novel form of photo-chemo-mechanical transduction, where light is utilized to control the conversion of chemical and mechanical energy in the system. Moreover, the interaction between the BZ gel gears reveals a new form of entrainment between these moving units. Namely, their coordinated motion is achieved through chemical coupling or communication, rather than a mechanical coupling. These findings can lead to the formation of chemically “communicating” devices that can be programmed to perform autonomous work through the use of light.  相似文献

Bamboo strips [10 cm × 1.5 cm × (1?1.5) mm] were treated with caustic solutions for 1 h at different concentrations e.g., 0, 10, 15, 20, and 25%. Bamboo strips reinforced polyester resin composites were fabricated by hand‐lay‐up technique using both alkali‐treated and untreated bamboo strips, using a room temperature curing system for the polyester resin. This study aims at the evaluation of the influence of caustic concentration on the mechanical properties of bamboo strips reinforced polyester resin composites at a constant 50% loading of reinforcement. Maximum improvement in property was achieved possibly with 20% of caustic treated strip reinforcements. Beyond 20%, there was degradation in all the strength properties because of failure in mechanical properties of the reinforcements itself. The effect of fiber loading variation upon mechanical properties was also studied.
