Formation of GaAsP interface layers monitored by reflectance anisotropy spectroscopy

Reflectance anisotropy spectroscopy (RAS) has been used to study As-by-P exchange during metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. The study focuses on the processes occurring during switching from GaAs to GaInP, especially the effect of purging PH₃ over a GaAs surface. GaAsP/GaAs superlattices of different periodicity were grown and the P-content was determined by high-resolution x-ray diffraction and correlated to the RAS spectra. From the temperature dependence of the P-content, an activation energy of 0.56 eV was estimated for the incorporation mechanism. In addition to the insights into the processes at mixed group-V heterointerfaces, our study demonstrates the reproducibility of RAS transients that thus can be used for process monitoring.     

PYY in developing murine islet cells: comparisons to development of islet hormones, NPY, and BrdU incorporation

Exhaustive characterizations of antisera to the structurally related peptides pancreatic polypeptide (PP), neuropeptide Y (NPY), and peptide YY (PYY) enabled us to establish the developmental pattern of these peptides in rat and mouse pancreas. PYY was the earliest detectable peptide and was present in all early appearing endocrine cell types. NPY appeared later and occurred exclusively in a subpopulation of insulin cells, whereas PP cells arose latest. At the earliest stage studied, all endocrine cells stored PYY. Most of these cells also contained glucagon. Subsequently, the endocrine cells comprised glucagon+PYY cells and glucagon+PYY+insulin cells. Later, cells storing either only insulin or insulin+PYY appeared. Quantitations of the relative numbers of these cell populations during development were consistent with a precursor role of triple-positive (insulin+glucagon+PYY) cells. Moreover, bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) injections at E15.5 showed that a large percentage of triple-positive cells were in S-phase and therefore were actively dividing, whereas almost no pure insulin cells or insulin+PYY cells synthesized DNA at this time. These results suggest that PYY-positive endocrine cells may represent precursors for mature islet cells.

Modeling and experimentation of a passive low frequency nanoforce sensor based on diamagnetic levitation

This paper is focused on the study of a new low frequency micro and nanoforce sensor based on diamagnetic levitation. The force sensitive part is a 10-cm long macroscopic capillary tube used as a levitating seismic mass. This tube presents a naturally stable equilibrium state with six degrees of freedom thanks to the combination of diamagnetic repulsive and magnetic attractive forces. It is only used as a one-direction force sensing device along its longitudinal axis. This force sensor is passive. The force measurement is based on the displacement of the capillary tube and in steady-state this displacement is proportional to the force. This sensor is characterized by an under-damped second-order linear force-displacement dynamic which remains linear on several hundred micrometers and can thus measure a wide range of microforces. Because of the magnetic springs configuration used, the capillary tube presents a horizontal mechanical stiffness that can be adjusted between 0.01 and 0.03 N/m (similar to the stiffness of a thin AFM cantilever). The measurement range typically varies between ±50 μN. Bandwidth is 4 Hz. The resolution depends on the sensor used to measure the capillary tube displacement and on noises induced by environmental conditions (ground and air vibrations). The resolution typically reached with a STIL confocal chromatic sensor is 5 nN inside a test chamber located on a anti-vibration table. This study is illustrated by a pull-off force measurement.     

Pairwise testing for software product lines: comparison of two approaches

Software Product Lines (SPL) are difficult to validate due to combinatorics induced by variability, which in turn leads to combinatorial explosion of the number of derivable products. Exhaustive testing in such a large products space is hardly feasible. Hence, one possible option is to test SPLs by generating test configurations that cover all possible t feature interactions (t-wise). It dramatically reduces the number of test products while ensuring reasonable SPL coverage. In this paper, we report our experience on applying t-wise techniques for SPL with two independent toolsets developed by the authors. One focuses on generality and splits the generation problem according to strategies. The other emphasizes providing efficient generation. To evaluate the respective merits of the approaches, measures such as the number of generated test configurations and the similarity between them are provided. By applying these measures, we were able to derive useful insights for pairwise and t-wise testing of product lines.     

The composite structure of peak 5 in the glow curve of LiF:Mg,Ti (TLD-100): confirmation of peak 5a arising from a locally trapped electron-hole configuration

The hypothesis that glow peak 5a arises from localised e-h capture is confirmed by the following experimental observations: (i) The high conversion efficiency (CE) (CE5a-->4 = 3 +/- 0.5) of peak 5a to peak 4 (a hole-only trap) deduced from detailed Im-Tstop optical bleaching studies at 310 nm compared to the much lower CE of peak 5 (an electron-only trap) (CE5-->4 = 0.0026+/-0.012). (ii) The lack of an increase in the sensitivity of glow peak 5a following 2.6 MeV and 6.8 MeV He ion irradiation in 'sensitised' material compared to the factor two increase in the sensitivity of peak 5; (S/S0)5a = 0.86+/-0.12, compared to (S/S0)5 = 2.0+/-0.2. (iii) The late entry into saturation of the 2.6 MeV and 6.8 MeV He ion TL-fluence response curves for peak 5a compared to peak 5 in sensitised and normal material resulting in the following values for the track radial saturation parameter: (r50)5a = 100+/-20) Angstroms compared to (r50)5 = 380+/-30 Angstroms. (iv) The low value of 0.1 for the 'track-escape' parameter of peak 5a deduced from the Extended Track Interaction Model analysis of He ion TL fluence response compared to order of magnitude greater values for peaks 5 and 5b.     

Search for ionisation density effects in the radiation absorption stage in LiF:Mg,Ti

Optical absorption (OA) dose-response of LiF:Mg,Ti (TLD-100) is studied as a function of electron energy (ionisation density) and irradiation dose. Contrary to the situation in thermoluminescence dose-response where the supralinearity is strongly energy-dependent, no dependence of the OA dose filling constants on energy is observed. This result is interpreted as indicating a lack of competitive process in the radiation absorption stage. The lack of an energy dependence of the dose filling constant also suggests that the charge carrier migration distances are sufficiently large to smear out the differences in the non-uniform distribution of ionisation events created by the impinging gamma/electron radiation of various energies.     

Improved exercise tolerance following enhanced external counterpulsation: cardiac or peripheral effect?

Tissue damage, inflammation and necrosis are hallmarks of myocardial infarction. In the present study significant elevations of serum alpha-1-antitrypsin were noted in coronary artery disease and angina cases. Interestingly chronic rheumatic heart disease which is also characterized by tissue injury. Inflammation revealed normal levels of serum alpha-1-antitrypsin. The level in chronic rheumatic heart disease was 3.37 +/- 0.57 mumol/mt/ml (control level was 3.37 +/- 0.54 mumol/mt/ml). The corollary of these observations is that in heart diseases acute phase response in terms of enhanced levels of alpha-1-antitrypsin differ depending on the causative factors. Except chronic rheumatic heart disease, in all other stressful states studied there is (to a certain degree) an altered systemic homeostasis and haemostasis. On the other hand chronic rheumatic heart disease encompass certain amount of acute phase status in terms of tissue damage and inflammation does exist unaccompanied by altered systemic homeostasis and haemostasis. However, bacteriological etiologies predominate the triggered immune responses. It is hypothesised that serum alpha-1-antitrypsin enhancement will not occur even though acute phase state exists if specific immune responses are also a part of the disease manifestation.
