Herein, we report antibacterial and antifungal evaluation of a series of previously prepared (+)-tanikolide analogues. One analogue, (4S,6S)-4-methyltanikolide, displayed promising anti-methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus activity with a MIC of 12.5 µg/mL. Based on the antimicrobial properties of the structurally related (−)-malyngolide, two further analogues (4S,6S)-4-methylmalyngolide and (4R,6S)-4-methylmalyngolide bearing a shortened n-nonyl alkyl side chain were prepared in the present study using a ZrCl4-catalysed deprotection/cyclisation as the key step in their asymmetric synthesis. When these were tested for activity against anti-methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, the MIC increased to 50 µg/mL. 相似文献

An atmospheric pressure microwave digestion method has been developed for the combined analysis of total phosphorus and Kjeldahl nitrogen in complex matrices. In comparison to the digestion steps in EPA Methods 365.4 (total phosphorus) and 351.x (Kjeldahl nitrogen), this method requires less time, eliminates the need for a catalyst, and reduces the toxicity of the waste significantly. It employs a microwave-assisted digestion step, using refluxing borosilicate glass vessels at atmospheric pressure. Traditionally, this method has a time-consuming sample preparation step and generates toxic waste through the use of heavy metal catalysts. These advantages are gained by the combination of a high boiling point acid (sulfuric acid) and the application of focused microwave irradiation, which enhances the digestion process by direct energy coupling. NIST standard reference materials 1572 (citrus leaves), 1577a (bovine liver), and 1566 (oyster tissue) and tryptophan were analyzed to validate the method. Phosphorus concentrations were determined by the colorimetric ascorbic acid method outlined in EPA Method 365.3. Kjeldahl nitrogen concentrations were determined using EPA Method 351.1. The two-point bend strength and the fracture toughness of a series of soda–potassia–silicate and soda–potassia–calcia–silicate glass fibres have been measured. There is a clear variation of mean strength with composition for the soda–potassia–silicate glasses, however, there is much less variation of mean strength with composition for the soda–potassia–calcia–silicate glasses. There is also a greater variation of fracture toughness with composition for the soda–potassia–silicate glasses than for the soda–potassia–calcia–silicate glasses. The mean strength, fracture toughness and inferred flaw sizes for the soda–potassia–calcia–silicate glasses are all less than the equivalent values for the soda–potassia–silicate glasses. This paper reports an efficient solution dip coating method for the fabrication of highly transparent and conductive single-walled
carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) based thin films. The key to achieve this is properly preparing the polymer surfaces. In this paper
we report a surface pretreatment approach of combining air plasma treatment and silane water solution rinsing for polyethylene
terephthalate substrate. After this surface pretreatment, one dip (using a home-made dip coater) of SWCNT solution can yield
a thin film of the sheet resistance less than 100 ohms/square (Ω/□) and transparency around 90% at the wavelength of 550 nm;
while two dips can produce a thin film of the sheet resistance less than 80 Ω/□ and transparency around 80% at the wavelength
of 550 nm. The carbon nanotube thin film performances achieved are close to those of the ITO coatings reported in the literature

The effectiveness of commercial oilsands separation processes relies on the water wettability of the solids. Consequently, the interaction between the mineral and organic matter types present in oilsands is of interest. In this work, we report results related to the adsorption of a pentane insoluble fraction from bitumen on kaolinite and illite, the major clay types present in oilsands. We determined adsorption from toluene solution by illite and kaolinite and use a combination of spectroscopic techniques to probe the organic coated clay surfaces to different depths. Twenty-five affected women of reproductive age known to the North West Regional Genetics Family Register (NWRGFR) were interviewed. A semistructured questionnaire, completed by the interviewer, was used to assess understanding and experience of the clinical and genetic aspects of myotonic dystrophy (MD) and attitudes to prenatal diagnosis (PND). Characteristic features of MD (muscle weakness and wasting and myotonia) were well known. Knowledge of other features and complications reflected experience. All subjects were aware that MD is inherited, but only 56% (14/25) knew the risk to their own children and subjects tended to overestimate this risk. Anticipation and maternal transmission of congenital myotonic dystrophy (CMD) were often misunderstood. Almost half of the subjects (12/25) perceived themselves to be moderately or severely affected and 40% (10/25) felt that their symptoms restricted daily life. Feelings of devastation, depression, worry about the future, and guilt at the risk of transmission to their children were described. Many subjects (10/25) said that the worst aspect of MD is the risk of transmission to their children. Over half (14/25) said that the risk of transmitting MD had influenced or would influence their own reproduction. Three-quarters of subjects who felt that MD had influenced their reproductive decisions (9/12) chose to limit their family or have no children; only 25% (3/12) requested PND. Subjects felt that the lack of information concerning clinical severity made PND for MD difficult to consider. 相似文献
