Academically selective schools are intended to affect academic self-concept positively, but theoretical and empirical research demonstrates that the effects are negative. The big-fish--little-pond effect (BFLPE), an application of social comparison theory to educational settings, posits that a student will have a lower academic self-concept in an academically selective school than in a nonselective school. This study, the largest cross-cultural study of the BFLPE ever undertaken, tested theoretical predictions for nationally representative samples of approximately 4,000 15-year-olds from each of 26 countries (N=103,558) who completed the same self-concept instrument and achievement tests. Consistent with the BFLPE, the effects of school-average achievement were negative in all 26 countries (M beta=-.20, SD=.08), demonstrating the BFLPE's cross-cultural generalizability. PURPOSE: To determine the efficacy, dose-response relationship, and safety of 30, 60, and 90 mg of a single intravenous dose of an aminobisphosphonate, pamidronate (APD), for the treatment of moderate to severe hypercalcemia of malignancy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with histologically proven cancer and a corrected serum calcium level of at least 12.0 mg/dL after 48 hours of normal saline hydration were enrolled in a double-blind, multicenter, randomized clinical trial. Pamidronate in 30-, 60-, or 90-mg doses was administered as a single 24-hour infusion. Serum calcium corrected for albumin, urine hydroxyproline, and calcium excretion, and serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) (1-84) were determined before and after pamidronate therapy. RESULTS: Thirty-two men and 18 women entered the study. A dose-response relationship for normalization of corrected serum calcium was seen after pamidronate administration. Corrected serum calcium normalized in 40% of patients who received 30 mg, in 61% of patients who received 60 mg, and in 100% of patients who received 90 mg of pamidronate. The decline in the serum calcium level was associated with decreased osteoclastic skeletal resorption evidenced by a decrease in urine calcium and hydroxyproline excretion. Among those with a normalized corrected serum calcium level, the mean (median) duration of normalization of the corrected serum calcium value was 9.2 (4), 13.3 (5), and 10.8 (6) days in the 30-, 60-, and 90-mg treatment groups, respectively. The response of hypercalcemia to pamidronate was not significantly influenced by the presence of skeletal metastases. PTH 1-84, suppressed in patients on entry into this study, increased to a greater extent in those patients with osteolytic skeletal metastases compared with those with humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy. Clinical improvement, including improved mental status and decreased anorexia, accompanied the decline in the corrected serum calcium level in all three treatment groups. Side effects included low-grade fever, asymptomatic hypocalcemia, hypomagnesemia, and hypophosphatemia. CONCLUSIONS: A single-dose infusion of 60 to 90 mg of pamidronate was highly effective and well tolerated and normalized corrected serum calcium in nearly all patients (61% to 100%) with hypercalcemia of malignancy.  相似文献

In the field of micro-technology the production of metallic and ceramic micro-components by powder injection molding (PIM) has become a more and more established fabrication method. But in order to fulfill the demand for more complex-shaped high-precision micro-components further development work has to be performed. This is especially true if more efficient production routes for multi-component-micro-assemblies consisting of different materials or sub-components are envisaged. To meet these challenges, investigations are performed to realize and to establish two primary shape micro-processes. These are two-component micro-injection molding (2C-MicroPIM) and sinter-joining. The realization of these technologies will lead to a markedly reduction of the efforts for handling, adjustment, and assembling of metallic and ceramic micro-assemblies. Furthermore, an increased integration level and functionality can be yielded. For an effective transfer of scientific results to industrial applications the whole process chain must be considered, from development and construction of the tooling as well as of the components to the quality assurance and determination of the properties of the assemblies after sintering. These primary shape processes shall enable the mutual processing of different materials within the fabrication process, so avoiding separate mounting or assembling steps. Additionally fixed and loose junctions between at least two components shall be realized. The progress in research and development will be demonstrated especially by the implementation of shaft-to-collar connections between micro-gearwheels and corresponding shafts. Regarding two-component micro-injection molding, the tool construction for shaft-to-collar connections will be presented as well as first experimental results on the properties of selected ceramic powders and feedstocks for the special requirements of the 2C-MicroPIM process. With the assembly step being performed outside the injection molding tool before sinter-joining different parts and geometries can be combined quite easily. The presented article gives an overview on the concept and on preliminary testing results for the fabrication of a shaft-to-collar-connection. Additionally, a solution for an automated assembly of a shaft and a toothed wheel outside the injection molding tool is presented.  相似文献

In overlay networks, the network characteristics before and after a vertical handoff would be drastically different. Consequently, in this paper, we propose an end‐to‐end based scheme to support protocol and application adaptation in vertical handoffs. First, we proposed a Vertical‐handoff Aware TCP, called VA‐TCP. VA‐TCP can identify the packet losses caused by vertical handoffs. If segments losses are due to vertical handoffs, VA‐TCP only retransmits the missing segments but does not invoke the congestion control procedure. Moreover, VA‐TCP dynamically estimates the bandwidth and round‐trip time in a new network. Based on the estimated bandwidth and round‐trip time, VA‐TCP adjusts its parameters to respond to the new network environment. Second, during a vertical handoff, applications also need to be adapted accordingly. Therefore, we design a programming interface that allows applications to be notified upon and adapt to changing network environments. To support our interface, we utilize the signal mechanism to achieve kernel‐to‐user notification. Nevertheless, signals cannot carry information. Thus, we implement the shared memory mechanism between applications and the kernel to facilitate parameters exchange. Finally, we also provide a handoff‐aware CPU scheduler so that tasks that are interested in the vertical‐handoff event are given preference over other processes to attain a prompt response for new network conditions. We have implemented a prototype system on the Linux kernel 2.6. From the experimental results, our proposed protocol and application adaptation mechanisms are shown to effectively improve the performance of TCP and applications during vertical handoffs. In scenes with collectively moving objects, to disregard the individual objects and take the entire group into consideration for motion characterization is a promising approach with wide application prospects. In contrast to studies on the segmentation of independently moving objects, our purpose is to construct a segmentation of these objects to characterize their motions at a macroscopic level. In general, the collectively moving objects in a group have very similar motion behavior with their neighbors and appear as a kind of global collective motion. This paper presents a joint segmentation approach for these collectively moving objects. In our model, we extract these macroscopic movement patterns based on optical flow field sequences. Specifically, a group of collectively moving objects correspond to a region where the optical flow field has high magnitude and high local direction coherence. As a result, our problem can be addressed by identifying these coherent optical flow field regions. The segmentation is performed through the minimization of a variational energy functional derived from the Bayes classification rule. Specifically, we use a bag-of-words model to generate a codebook as a collection of prototypical optical flow patterns, and the class-conditional probability density functions for different regions are determined based on these patterns. Finally, the minimization of our proposed energy functional results in the gradient descent evolution of segmentation boundaries which are implicitly represented through level sets. The application of our proposed approach is to segment and track multiple groups of collectively moving objects in a large variety of real-world scenes.  相似文献

Two operational formats namely mass customization and mass production can be implemented to satisfy customer preference-based demand. The mass customization system consists of two stages: the initial build-to-stock phase and the final customize-to-order phase. The mass production system has a single stage: building products with pre-determined specifications to stock. In each case, the company makes decisions on the number of initial product variants, product specifications, production quantities and product pricing. Under a uniform customer preference distribution, the optimal number of base-product variants resembles the well known economic order quantity solution, and the optimal product specifications are equally spaced. We characterize three possible benefits of mass customization: (i) the gained surplus from offering each customer her ideal product; (ii) extra revenue from price discrimination; and (iii) reduced costs due to risk pooling under stochastic demand.  相似文献

In a 2-wave study of a cohort of 108 Chinese students (10- to 11-year-olds) learning English as a second language, the authors examined the relative effects of three Time 1 latent constructs-- orthographic knowledge, phonological sensitivity, and word identification (reading and spelling of regular and exception words)--on the respective Time 2 performance. The authors posited autoregressive effects, in which Time 1 constructs affected their matching Time 2 performance (e.g., Time 1 orthographic knowledge on Time 2 orthographic knowledge), as well as reciprocal cross-domain effects (e.g., orthographic knowledge on word identification and vice versa). The model converged to a proper solution with reasonably good fit. The results suggest (a) strong stability in the children's word identification and phonological sensitivity, (b) substantial effects of word identification on subsequent orthographic knowledge and phonological sensitivity, particularly the former; and (c) greater variations in individuals' growth of orthographic knowledge. In this paper, we describe a Knowledge-Based railway scheduling system (called RSS) for Taiwan Railway Administration's (TRA) railway scheduling operations. In our approach, the scheduling process is divided into two levels: global scheduling and local scheduling. In global scheduling, an initial train diagram is established by the Global Scheduler according to the master scheduling plan without considering conflicts. In local scheduling, scheduling conflicts are repaired by Local Scheduler. An embedded knowledge base provides advice for conflict resolution. Since cycles may exist among a sequence of repairs during the repair process, we also propose a cycle detection and resolution scheme in this paper. Through a graphic user interface, the user can interact with the Automatic Scheduler to solve the large-scale complex train scheduling problem in a cooperative and flexible fashion.  相似文献

The internal/external frame of reference (I/E) model explains a seemingly paradoxical pattern of relations between math and verbal self-concepts and corresponding measures of achievement, extends social comparison theory, and has important educational implications. In a cross-cultural study of nationally representative samples of 15-year-olds from 26 countries (total N = 55,577), I/E predictions were supported in that (a) math and verbal achievements were highly correlated, but math and verbal self-concepts were nearly uncorrelated; (b) math achievement had positive effects on math self-concept, but negative effects on verbal self-concept; and (c) verbal achievement had positive effects on verbal self-concept, but negative effects on math self-concept. Supporting the cross-cultural generalizability of predictions, multigroup structural equation models demonstrated good support for the generalizabilify of results across 26 countries participating in the Programme for International Student Assessment project sponsored by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Identification of presumptive foodborne pathogens grown on selective media may take one to several days and requires a different battery of biochemical tests for each microorganism. A molecular identification method was developed in which universal primers were used to amplify the 16S to 23S rDNA intergenic spacer of target microorganisms, and PCR products were hybridized to a panel of species-specific oligonucleotides that were immobilized on a nylon membrane. The seven target microorganisms were Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella, Staphylococcus aureus, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus. After testing a large collection of target bacteria (29 to 51 strains) and nontarget bacteria (> 500 strains), the performances (sensitivity and specificity) of the oligonucleotide array were as follows: B. cereus (100 and 77%), E. coli (100 and 100%), L. monocytogenes (100 and 90%), P. aeruginosa (100 and 100%), Salmonella (100 and 100%), S. aureus (100 and 100%), and V. parahaemolyticus (100 and 94.2%). Other species in the B. cereus group cross-hybridized to the probes used for identification of B. cereus, and positive results should be confirmed by additional morphological observation of colonies. Listeria innocua cross-reacted with probes used to identify L. monocytogenes, but a simple hemolysis test was used to differentiate the two species. Some strains of Vibrio harveyi and Vibrio mimicus cross-hybridized with probes used for identification of V. parahaemolyticus and caused false-positive reactions. The advantage of the array is that a common protocol was used to identify the seven target microorganisms and multiple different microorganisms could be simultaneously identified on a single array.  相似文献
