The paper illustrates the novel concept of Cognitive UWB Radio, a wireless system based on UWB transmission able to self-adapt to the characteristics of the surrounding environment. First, salient features of UWB transmission are reviewed, and then, application of UWB characteristics to the problem of cognitive radio systems is discussed. Current ongoing studies and achieved results on a possible physical layer based on Prolate Spheroidal Wave Functions and consistent with the Cognitive UWB Radio paradigm are presented and analyzed, and their application to the sensor network scenario is discussed.  相似文献

The paper deals with the problem of improving co-ordination between the online economic dispatch (ED) function and the very short-term advance dispatch (AD). Both procedures are formulated as optimal dispatching problems, but while a static model is used for the ED function, a dynamic model is employed in AD. The need to account for ramp-rate limits of thermal power generation even in the ED phase is satisfied by adding suitable penalty terms to the objective function of the classical ED problem. These penalties are proportional to the Lagrange multipliers associated with ramp-rate limits that are active at the AD solution. An efficient updating procedure is used to correct the penalization by taking the load forecast errors into account. The proposed co-ordination procedure can provide the snapshot ED with the long range perspective of AD without resorting to heuristic approaches. The procedure is validated by extensive testing carried out both on a small CIGRE test case and on a medium-large scale network representative of the Italian EHV system. Moreover, test results show that the CPU time requirements of the modified ED procedure are still suited to online applications  相似文献

The IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol provides a reliable link layer using Stop & Wait ARQ. The cost for high reliability is the overhead due to acknowledgement packets in the direction opposite to the actual data flow. In this paper, the design of a new protocol as an enhancement of IEEE 802.11 is proposed, with the aim of reducing supplementary traffic overhead and increasing the bandwidth available for actual data transmission. The performance of the proposed protocol is evaluated through comparison with IEEE 802.11 as well as with a SSCOP-based protocol. Results underline significant advantages of the proposed protocol against existing ones, thus confirming the value and potentiality of the approach.Dzmitry Kliazovich received his Masters degree in telecommunication science from Belarusian State University of Informatics and Radioelectronics in 2002. Providing reliable and efficient routing in presence of relative movement motivates the introduction of movement awareness to improve performance of existing position-based routing schemes in vehicular ad-hoc networks. The proposed algorithm represents a modification of well-known GPSR which exploits information about movement in order to improve the next forwarding node decision. Performance evaluation of the proposed protocol underlines a promising and robust basis for designing a routing strategy suitable for the automotive scenario.  相似文献

A procedure for solving the capacitor placement problem is presented. The objective is to determine the minimum investment required to satisfy suitable reactive constraints. Due to the discrete nature of reactive compensation devices, optimal capacitor placement leads to a nonlinear programming problem with mixed (discrete and continuous) variables. It is solved with an iterative algorithm based on successive linearizations of the original nonlinear model. The mixed integer linear programming problem to be solved at each iteration of the procedure is tackled by applying both a deterministic method (branch and bound) and genetic algorithm techniques. A hybrid procedure, aiming to exploit the best features of both algorithms is also considered. The proposed procedures are tested and compared with reference to a small CIGRE system and two actual networks derived from the Italian transmission and distribution system  相似文献

Cross-layer design has been proposed to optimize the performance of networks by exploiting the interrelations among parameters and procedures at different levels of the protocol stack. This paper introduces a quantitative framework for the study of cross-layer interactions, which enables design engineers to analyze and quantify interlayer dependencies and to identify the optimal operating point of the system, by using network economic theory principles. The framework is then used for performance optimization of a single-cell Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) system. Insights gained from the considered scenario enable us to define a novel cross-layer Call Admission Control (CAC) scheme. The multistage CAC takes into account Quality of Service (QoS) criteria, which provide satisfaction to the end user, as well as revenue criteria that maximize the possible profit of the WiFi provider.  相似文献

Smart grids are expected to provide various benefits to society by integrating advances in power engineering with recent developments in the field of information and communications technology. One of the advantages is the support to efficient demand‐side management (DSM), for example, changes in consumer demands for energy based on using incentives. Indeed, DSM is expected to help grid operators balance time‐varying generation by wind and solar units, and the optimization of their usage. This paper focuses on DSM considering renewable energy generation and proposes an auction, in which consumers submit bids to renewable energy usage plans. An additional model is introduced to allow consumers to compute their bid for a given usage plan. Both models have been extended to include energy storage devices. The proposed model is compared to a system with time‐varying pricing for energy, where it is shown to allow consumers to use more appliances, to lead to a larger profit, and to reduce the peak‐to‐average ratio of energy consumption. Finally, the impact of the use of energy storage in households and in the energy provider is also considered.  相似文献

Spectrum crowding, spectrum management, quality of service, and user support are the topics of vigorous research in the cognitive and dynamic spectrum access network communities. As research matures, standardization provides a bridge between research results, implementation, and widespread deployment of such networks. This article reports recent developments within the IEEE Standardization Coordinating Committee 41, "Dynamic Spectrum Access Networks." It outlines possible future standardization topics for IEEE SCC41, in the framework of other related standardization activities, and discusses open research issues that present future challenges for the standardization community.  相似文献

Wireless networks are being increasingly employed to provide mobile access to network services. In most existing standards, reliable transmission on the wireless medium is achieved through the introduction of ARQ schemes at MAC layer, a strategy which is also employed by TCP for reliable end‐to‐end data delivery. The paper proposes an approach to overcome the performance degradation deriving from the duplicate ARQ strategies implemented at the transport and MAC layers by introducing a cross‐layer solution to reduce un‐necessary transmissions on the wireless medium. Furthermore, the paper describes how the proposed scheme, called ARQ Proxy, can be deployed in three different wireless technologies (3G Long‐Term Evolution, Wi‐Fi, and WiMAX) and provides extensive validation of the achievable improvement through simulations.
