A method for using a time interval counter to measure frequency stability

An interval timer is used in a single-mixer frequency-stability measurement system in place of an event timer. The dead-time problem is avoided with the aid of a reference pulse train and an algorithm for ambiguity resolution. The noise floor test and the unfolding algorithm are described. Advantages of the technique are high precision, convenient interfacing, and low cost. A disadvantage is the vulnerability of the technique to missing data.     

Responses of the Aphids Phorodon humuli and Rhopalosiphum padi to Sex Pheromone Stereochemistry in the Field

Gynoparous female and male damson-hop aphids, Phorodon humuli (Schrank), were caught in the field by water traps that were releasing the sex pheromone of this species, (1RS,4aR,7S,7aS)-nepetalactol. No behavioral activity was elicited by (4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactone, the major sex pheromone component of other aphid species such as Megoura viciae Buckton, even though olfactory cells were found in the secondary rhinaria on the third antennal segment of P. humuli that responded strongly to this compound. Gynoparous female P. humuli in the field responded less strongly to (1R,4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactol, the sex pheromone of the bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi (L.), than they did to the (4aR,7S,7aS)-nepetalactols, but males responded only to the latter. The (4aR,7S,7aS)-nepetalactone showed no electrophysiological activity so was not used in field trials. Releasing either the (4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactone or the (1R,4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactol with the (4aR,7S,7aS)-nepetalactols did not inhibit the response of P. humuli gynoparous females and males to the latter. Males of R. padi responded as strongly to the (4aR,7S,7aS)-nepetalactols as they did to (1R,4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactol. Males of P. humuli and R. padi responded positively to an increased concentration of the (4aR,7S,7aS)-nepetalactols released from two vials compared with that from a single vial, as did P. humuli (in one of two experiments) and R. padi to the (1RS,4aR,7S,7aS)- and (1R,4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactols when released together.     

Surface plasmon resonance evaluation of various aminoglycoside-RNA hairpin interactions reveals low degree of selectivity

Aminoglycoside antibiotics, which are able to selectively bind to RNA, are considered to be an important lead in RNA-targeting drug discovery. In this study, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) was employed to explore the interaction of aminoglycosides with known tobramycin-binding RNA hairpins (aptamers) and an unrelated RNA hairpin. It was established that aminoglycosides have multiple interactions with RNA hairpins. Unexpectedly, the different hairpins showed comparable affinity for a set of related aminoglycosides. The observed absence of selectivity presents an extra hurdle in the discovery of novel aminoglycosides as specific drugs that target defined RNA hairpins.     

Albumin stimulates lysophosphatidic acid acyltransferase activity in T-lymphocyte membranes

Phosphatidic acid (PtdOH) and lysophosphatidic acid (lysoPtdOH) have been shown to enhance T-lymphocyte function. However, the FA preference and influence of acyl-CoA binding proteins on lysoPtdOH and PtdOH biosynthesis are not known. Therefore, we determined glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase (GPAT) and lysophosphatidic acid acyltransferase (LAT) activity in rat T-lymphocyte and liver membrane preparations in the presence of palmitoyl-CoA and oleoyl-CoA with or without BSA. We found two different properties of GPAT and LAT in whole T-lymphocyte membrane preparations relative to liver. First, T-lymphocyte basal GPAT and LAT activities were similar, whereas in liver membranes LAT activity was 10-fold higher than GPAT. Second, T-lymphocyte LAT, but not GPAT, activity was inducible (fivefold) by the addition of albumin in the presence of palmitoyl-CoA but not oleoyl-CoA. In contrast, albumin stimulated GPAT, but not LAT, activity in liver membranes in the presence of palmitoyl-CoA. These results show, for the first time, that T-lymphocyte LAT activity can be increased by the presence of an acyl-CoA binding protein, which may indicate a new important control mechanism for regulating intracellular lysoPtdOH and PtdOH levels in T-lymphocytes.     

Quantization improvement in MRI using dual quantizers

The quantization of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data can cause information loss due to quantizer/data mismatch. The authors address a method for improved quantization as well as techniques for measuring the improvement in such methods. A dual quantizer scheme is described and simulated which is fast and more accurately quantizes MRI data than conventional methods. The approach is to use two quantizers, one for the high-level data and one for the low-level data. This adaptive, dual quantization scheme is simple and provides significant improvements in image quality, especially for three-dimensional (3-D) acquisition. Results are given which show how well the low frequencies are represented and indicate the increased fidelity of the high-frequency components. These results show a significant improvement in signal-to-noise ratio as well as in detection tasks for both noiseless data and data which include varying amounts of system noise.
