The preparation and properties of cyanobiphenyl liquid crystal droplets encapsulated by the polymerizable lecithin 1,2-bis(10,12-tricosadiynoyl)-sn-glyero-3-phosphocholine (DC8,9PC) are described. Under a wide variety of preparation conditions the droplets obtain a diameter of approximately 10 mum. These droplets are stable for periods of over one year at room temperature. Furthermore, they are stable upon temperature cycling between the nematic and isotropic phases and between the smectic A to nematic to isotropic phase transitions.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The discovery of the oblique chiral (or, the twist-bend, NTB) nematic phase predicted for bent-core mesogens has engendered much interest due to its unique structure and physical properties, and the possibility of use in the next generation of fast electro-optic technology. Bimesogenic calamitic as well as bent-core mesogens are found to form the NTB phase. Here, we report direct measurements of the temperature dependence of the conical tilt and the evidence of volcano-like orientational distribution of molecules in the NTB phase. Optical and x-ray scattering investigations of two single-component calamitic bimesogens and their mixtures show that, while the Maier–Saupe orientational distribution function (ODF) is valid for the higher temperature nematic phase, a generalised expansion in terms of even Legendre functions is needed for the NTB phase. Temperature dependence of the ODFs and the order parameters 〈P2(cosβ)〉, 〈P4(cosβ)〉, and 〈P6(cosβ)〉 has been measured in both phases. The parameters 〈P2(cosβ)〉 and 〈P4(cosβ)〉 increase/decrease in the N/NTB phase with decreasing temperature, while 〈P6(cosβ)〉 remains vanishingly small for all samples. The value of 〈P4(cosβ)〉 becomes negative in the NTB phase confirming a conical distribution of molecules as they follow a helical trajectory keeping the local director tilted at an angle α wrt the macroscopic director. The heliconical tilt calculated from ODFs, exhibits a power law behaviour with temperature, vanishing at the transition to the N phase.  相似文献

The optical and electro-optical properties of filled nematic liquid crystals, nematic systems with added colloidal silica nanoparticles (? 6%), have been studied. The macroscopic near IR birefringence of cells constructed from these materials was measured for wavelengths between 2 and 5 mum, and a wavelength independent value of 0.16 was obtained. The visible optical behaviour of cells formed with untreated ITO substrates using both filled nematic, and filled nematic and dichroic dyes was similar to those observed in polymer dispersed liquid crystals. At an electric field of 1–2 V μm -1, the cells were highly transmitting, while at low fields they were highly scattering. The effects of colloidal silica nanoparticle concentration, cell thickness, electric field and substrate preparation (rubbed polyimide versus no surface treatment) on the electro-optical behaviour of these cells were studied.  相似文献

The typical sidewalls produced in the fabrication of protrusion electrodes are proposed to create a low voltage (4.5 Vrms) and high transmittance (93%) blue-phase liquid crystal display (BP-LCD). The tilted electrodes produce a strong horizontal electrical field that reduces the operating voltage considerably. The common problem of the ‘dead zones’ is solved by reflecting the light onto the electrodes. In order to estimate the phase retardation of the reflected light, a ray tracing simulation program for anisotropic mediums has been developed. The proposed device is more competitive than vertical field switching based BP-LCD and also, has the advantages of protruded in-plane-switching structures. These facts make this technology a potential candidate for the next generation of BP-LCDs.  相似文献

Measurements of synchrotron radiation emitted by 30-MeV runaway electrons in the TEXTOR-94 tokamak show that the runaway population decays after switching on neutral beam injection (NBI). The decay starts only with a significant delay, which decreases with increasing NBI heating power. This delay provides direct evidence of the energy dependence of runaway confinement, which is expected if magnetic modes govern the loss of runaways. Application of the theory by Mynick and Strachan [Phys. Fluids 24, 695 (1981)] yields estimates for the "mode width" (delta) of magnetic perturbations: delta<0.5 cm in Ohmic discharges, increasing to delta = 4.4 cm for 0. 6 MW NBI.  相似文献
