An ASE Reduction Filter Using Cascaded Optical Fiber Grating Couplers in EDFA Repeater

A new configuration for an ASE reduction filter in EDFA repeaters for WDM optical transmission systems using optical fiber grating couplers (FGCs) was proposed and first demonstrated. The filtering characteristics of the proposed filter for amplified single wavelength signal and 2-channel WDM signals using EDFA were identified. It was found that the filter was effective to improve SNR in optical domain by reducing ASE noise. The required FGC characteristics for the filter were theoretically predicted under the condition that the total filter loss did not exceed 3 dB. More than 70% of drop efficiency was required in each FGC for the application of the proposed filter to an 8-channel WDM system using EDFA repeaters.     

A potentiometric microbial sensor based on immobilized escherichia coli for glutamic acid

The sensor consists of immobilized E. coli (which contains glutamate decarboxylase) and a carbon dioxide gas-sensor. Continuous introduction of sample solution into a flow system incorporating the sensor gives a potential which increases until a steady state is reached after 5 min. Measurements can also be made with only a 1- or 3-min introduction period with little loss of sensitivity. Calibration plots of mV measurements vs. logarithmic glutamic acid concentration are linear in the range 100–800 mg l^-1. The sensor is highly selective, stable and reproducible. It has been applied to the determination of glutamic acid in fermentation broths.     

Crystal structures of V3S4 and V5S8

Crystal structures of the ordered phases of V₃S₄ and V₅S₈ were refined with single crystal data. Both are monoclinic. Chemical compositions, space groups and lattice constants are as follows: VS_1.47, $\text{I2}\text{m}$ (No. 12), a = 5.831(1), b = 3.267(1), c = 11.317(2)Å, β = 91.78(1)° and VS_1.64, $\text{F}\text{2}\text{m}$ (No. 12), a = 11.396(11), b = 6.645(7), c = 11.293(4), Å, β = 91.45(6)°. In both structures, short metal-metal bonds were found between the layers as well as within them. In comparison with the structure of Fe₇S₈, the stability of NiAs-type structure was discussed based on the detailed metal-sulfur distances.     

PtCl2-catalyzed cycloisomerizations of 5-en-1-yn-3-ol systems

5-En-1-yn-3-ol substrates bearing a free hydroxyl group or an acyl group are highly versatile partners for PtCl2-catalyzed cycloisomerizations. Electrophilic activation of the alkyne moiety triggers at wish a hydride or an O-acyl migration yielding at the end to regioisomeric keto derivatives. The efficient preparation of Sabina ketone, an important monoterpene precursor, has been worked out.     

Stark effects on the phosphorescence spectra of p-benzoquinone

Stark effects on the phosphorescence spectra of p-benzoquinone have been studied in naphthalene crystals at temperatures between 1.7 and 30 K. The experimental data establish that the band splitting of 24 cm^?1 arises from a double minimum potential in the T₁ state.     

Conformational Analysis of the Anti‐obesity Drug Lorcaserin in Water: How To Take Advantage of Long‐Range Residual Dipolar Couplings

The conformational state of 8‐chloro‐1‐methyl‐2,3,4,5‐tetrahydro‐1H‐3‐benzazepine hydrochloride (lorcaserin) in water has been determined on the basis of one‐bond and long‐range C? H residual dipolar coupling (RDC) data along with DFT computations and ³J_HH coupling‐constant analysis. According to this analysis, lorcaserin exists as a conformational equilibrium of two crown‐chair forms, of which the preferred conformation has the methyl group in an equatorial orientation.     

Orientation Control of Photo‐Immobilized Antibodies on the Surface of Azobenzene‐Containing Polymers by the Introduction of Functional Groups

In our photo‐induced immobilization technique for an antibody (IgG) using azopolymers, the introduction of COOH and NMe₂ into the azopolymers, which can introduce surface charges, strongly affected the immobilization properties such as the efficiency of immobilization and the activity of the immobilized IgG (i.e., the orientation of the immobilized IgG). The introduction of COOH promoted a more active orientation of the immobilized IgG. The orientation was determined during the adsorption process onto the azopolymer surface in solution before photo‐immobilization, and was maintained during the photo‐immobilization. The surface charge of the azopolymer appears to be an important factor for IgG orientation, which involves electrostatic interactions between its Fab and the azopolymer surface.

     

Design, synthesis, evaluation, and structure of vitamin D analogues with furan side chains

Based on the crystal structures of human vitamin D receptor (hVDR) bound to 1α,25-dihydroxy-vitamin D(3) (1,25 D) and superagonist ligands, we previously designed new superagonist ligands with a tetrahydrofuran ring at the side chain that optimize the aliphatic side-chain conformation through an entropy benefit. Following a similar strategy, four novel vitamin D analogues with aromatic furan side chains (3a, 3b, 4a, 4b) have now been developed. The triene system has been constructed by an efficient stereoselective intramolecular cyclization of an enol triflate (A-ring precursor) followed by a Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of the resulting intermediate with an alkenyl boronic ester (CD-side chain, upper fragment). The furan side chains have been constructed by gold chemistry. These analogues exhibit significant pro-differentiation effects and transactivation potency. The crystal structure of 3a in a complex with the ligand-binding domain of hVDR revealed that the side-chain furanic ring adopts two conformations.
