Infrared Spectroscopic Analysis of Chrysene and 1.2-Benzanthracence in Wax films

Chrysene and 1.2-benzanthracene are successfully doped in a solid wax film and their vibrational spectra in gooo--400cm^-1 are discussed. The harmonic frequencies and relative intensities of both the molecules observed in the film are compared with theoretical values calculated by the density functional theory （DFT） model as well as with the previous experimental data. The effects on spectra due to change of matrix and some additional bands observed in the wax film are also reported. Excellent agreement in the spectral positions and strengths between the experiments and DFT values are found.

In this paper, we generalise the above works for any formal power series f in with f(0)=1, by constructing a set such that the generating function of is congruent to f modulo 2, and by showing that if f=P/Q, where P and Q are in with P(0)=Q(0)=1, then for all k≥0 the sequence is periodic on n.     

Synthesis,proton NMR stereochemical study and diels-alder reaction of (E)-7-arylidene-2H,6H-naphtho[1,8-bc]furan-2,6-diones

7-Arylidene-2H,6H-naphtho[1,8-bc]furan-2,6-diones 3 were prepared by a retro-Diels-Alder reaction of the corresponding dihydro 1,3-oxazines 2 or in a one pot synthesis from 6-hydroxy-2H-naphtho[1,8-bc]furan-2-one 1 . Their E configuration was established from the chemical shift's values of the vinylic proton and by ¹H nmr NOE difference spectroscopy. Cycloadditions of 3b upon styrene or stilbene were catalyzed by boron trifluoride etherate. The cycloadducts were obtained with the relative trans configuration.     

Determination of trace elements in coffee beans and instant coffee of various origins by INAA

Summary Extensive use of coffee, by one-third of world's population, entails the evaluation of trace element contents in it. Instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) was successfully employed to determine the concentration of 20 trace elements (essential, toxic and nonessential) in four samples of coffee beans of various origins and two instant coffee brands most commonly consumed in Pakistan. This study provides the base-line values of certain toxic and essential elements in coffee. The daily intake of essential and toxic elements through coffee was estimated and compared with the recommended values. The cumulative intake of Mn is four times higher than the recommended value and that of toxic elements is well below the tolerance limits.     

In situ tissue pathology from spatially encoded mass spectrometry classifiers visualized in real time through augmented reality

Integration between a hand-held mass spectrometry desorption probe based on picosecond infrared laser technology (PIRL-MS) and an optical surgical tracking system demonstrates in situ tissue pathology from point-sampled mass spectrometry data. Spatially encoded pathology classifications are displayed at the site of laser sampling as color-coded pixels in an augmented reality video feed of the surgical field of view. This is enabled by two-way communication between surgical navigation and mass spectrometry data analysis platforms through a custom-built interface. Performance of the system was evaluated using murine models of human cancers sampled in situ in the presence of body fluids with a technical pixel error of 1.0 ± 0.2 mm, suggesting a 84% or 92% (excluding one outlier) cancer type classification rate across different molecular models that distinguish cell-lines of each class of breast, brain, head and neck murine models. Further, through end-point immunohistochemical staining for DNA damage, cell death and neuronal viability, spatially encoded PIRL-MS sampling is shown to produce classifiable mass spectral data from living murine brain tissue, with levels of neuronal damage that are comparable to those induced by a surgical scalpel. This highlights the potential of spatially encoded PIRL-MS analysis for in vivo use during neurosurgical applications of cancer type determination or point-sampling in vivo tissue during tumor bed examination to assess cancer removal. The interface developed herein for the analysis and the display of spatially encoded PIRL-MS data can be adapted to other hand-held mass spectrometry analysis probes currently available.

The synthesis and ligand properties of the dihydro-bis-(1-indazolyl)borate anion

Summary Potassium dihydro-bis-(1-indazolyl)borate, synthesized from potassium borohydride and indazole, has been used as a reagent to yield complexes with copper(II), nickel(II), cobalt(II), manganese(II) and iron(III) ions. From i.r. spectral studies the ligand is uninegative and bidentate and coordination occurs through the nitrogen atom at position 2 of the indazole ring system in all cases. With the sole exception of the copper(II) complex, the nitrogen atom at position 1 is also involved in forming a bridge with an adjacent metal ion. On the basis of electronic spectral studies and magnetic susceptibility measurements a distorted square planar structure involving chlorine bridges has been proposed for the copper complex. An octahedral geometry with ligand bridges for all complexes is tentatively proposed and it appears that all are polymers.

An efficient novel synthesis of beta-(azuleno[1,2-b]benzothienyl)- and beta-(azuleno[2,1-b]benzothienyl)-alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones by the tropylium ion-mediated intramolecular furan ring-opening reaction and X-ray investigation of methyl ketone derivative

Intramolecular reaction of 2-tropylio-3-(5-substituted 2-furyl)benzothiophenes (3), prepared from the corresponding 2-cycloheptatrienyl-3-(5-substituted 2-furyl)benzothiophenes (2), afforded the beta-(azuleno[1,2-b]benzothienyl)-alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones (4), which are otherwise difficult to obtain, in moderate yields. The reaction involves a ring-opening process of the furan ring by intramolecular attack of the tropylium ion onto the 2-position of the furan ring. Similarly, beta-(azuleno[2,1-b]benzothienyl)-alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones (8) were obtained from the corresponding 3-tropylio-2-(5-substituted 2-furyl)benzothiophenes (7) albeit in lower yields. The molecular and crystal structures of the methyl ketone derivative, 8a, are discussed on the basis of X-ray structure analysis.
