Meiosis is a specialized cell division in which two chromosome segregation phases follow a single DNA replication phase. The budding yeast Polo-like kinase Cdc5 was found to be instrumental in establishing the meiosis I chromosome segregation program. Cdc5 was required to phosphorylate and remove meiotic cohesin from chromosomes. Furthermore, in the absence of CDC5 kinetochores were bioriented during meiosis I, and Mam1, a protein essential for coorientation, failed to associate with kinetochores. Thus, sister-kinetochore coorientation and chromosome segregation during meiosis I are coupled through their dependence on CDC5.  相似文献

  1. The ocean crisis is urgent and central to human wellbeing and life on Earth; past and current activities are damaging the planet's main life support system for future generations. We are witnessing an increase in ocean heat, disturbance, acidification, bio‐invasions and nutrients, and reducing oxygen levels. Several of these act like ratchets: once detrimental or negative changes have occurred, they may lock in place and may not be reversible, especially at gross ecological and ocean process scales.
  2. Each change may represent a loss to humanity of resources, ecosystem function, oxygen production and species. The longer we pursue unsuitable actions, the more we close the path to recovery and better ocean health and greater benefits for humanity in the future.
  3. We stand at a critical juncture and have identified eight priority issues that need to be addressed in unison to help avert a potential ecological disaster in the global ocean. They form a purposely ambitious agenda for global governance and are aimed at informing decision‐makers at a high level. They should also be of interest to the general public.
  4. Of all the themes, the highest priority is to rigorously address global warming and limit surface temperature rise to 1.5°C by 2100, as warming is the pre‐eminent factor driving change in the ocean. The other themes are establishing a robust and comprehensive High Seas Treaty, enforcing existing standards for Marine Protected Areas and expanding their coverage, especially in terms of high levels of protection, adopting a precautionary pause on deep‐sea mining, ending overfishing and destructive fishing practices, radically reducing marine pollution, putting in place a financing mechanism for ocean management and protection, and lastly, scaling up science/data gathering and facilitating data sharing.
  5. By implementing all eight measures in unison, as a coordinated strategy, we can build resilience to climate change, help sustain fisheries productivity, particularly for low‐income countries dependent on fisheries, protect coasts (e.g. via soft‐engineering/habitat‐based approaches), promote mitigation (e.g. carbon storage) and enable improved adaptation to rapid global change.

ABSTRACT

The present on-farm study assessed the effect of different stocking densities on growth, production, and financial benefits of African sharptooth catfish (Clarias gariepinus) in earthen ponds for 180 days. Low stocking density (LSD), medium stocking density (MSD), and high stocking density (HSD) of 3, 6, and 9 fish m?2, respectively, were tested. C. gariepinus stocked at LSD and MSD showed significantly higher weight gain, specific growth rate, and final mean weight than those cultured at HSD (P < .05). There was a significant linear relationship between the stocking density and the yields and financial variables (P < .05). Net fish yields were significantly higher for C. gariepinus reared at HSD and MSD than those stocked at LSD (P < .05). Similarly, C. gariepinus raised at MSD and HSD generated significantly more profit than those cultured at LSD (P < .05). Results demonstrated that farmers can achieve high net yield and financial benefits by stocking C. gariepinus at HSD of 9 fish m?2.  相似文献

Animal welfare and environmental protection are increasingly important. Housing systems must be found that offer animal welfare while minimizing the overall emissions of ammonia and greenhouse gases. The straw flow system is an animal friendly housing system for fattening pigs, which can be operated economically on commercial farms. Emissions from conventional slurry based pig houses have been intensively studied, but more research is needed into straw based systems. In this study, we quantified emissions of ammonia and greenhouse gases from a straw flow system with or without daily removal of slurry to an outside store. The effect of applying a solid cover during outside storage was also examined.

Emissions of NH3, N2O, CH4, and volatile organic C (VOC) from a commercial straw flow system for fattening pigs in Upper Austria were measured between June 2003 and March 2004. Emissions of CH4 during housing were 1.24 and 0.54 kg CH4 per pig place per year without and with daily manure removal, respectively. The corresponding N2O emissions amounted to 39.9 and 24.5 g N2O per pig place per year, and NH3 emissions to 2.10 and 1.90 kg NH3 per pig place per year without and with daily manure removal. Emissions of CH4, N2O and NH3, and of total greenhouse gases, from the straw flow system were lower than literature reference values for forced ventilated fully slatted floor systems. Daily removal of the manure to an outside store reduced emissions from the pig house.

Emissions during storage of pig slurry derived from a straw flow system were quantified between June 2004 and June 2005. Slurry was stored in pilot scale stores with or without a solid cover and emissions quantified by a large open dynamic chamber. The solid cover reduced NH3 and greenhouse gas emissions by 30 and 50%, respectively. During cold climatic conditions stored pig manure emitted less NH3 and greenhouse gases than when stored under warm climatic conditions. We recommend the use of separate emission factors for slurry storage in the colder and warmer periods in the national emission inventory, and the use of covers on pig slurry stores.

Overall, it is concluded that the straw flow system may combine recommendations of animal welfare and environmental protection.  相似文献

The Bavarian Turnip (Bayerische Rübe, Brassica rapa L. em. Metzg. var. rapa) is a nearly lost crop today. Until 1900, this local variety was commonly grown in Bavaria for human consumption. The special and very distinct characters of this variety in comparison with recent breeds are preferred by the farmers families and assured the persistence and survival of this turnip in situ (on farm). In the region of Dachau and Freising, located north of Munich, only four farms are known, where this old crop is still grown and maintained. Urgent measures have to be taken to safe this cultural relict for future generations.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In an Artemia survey conducted along the coast of Tanzania between March and July 2017, 32 salt pans in Tanga, Dar es salaam, Pwani, Lindi, and Mtwara were assessed. Of all visited salt pans, 16 (50%) had either Artemia biomass or cysts or both. Body length ranged from 4.0 mm to 9.5 mm, while the mean and modal lengths were 6.2 mm and 6.0 mm, respectively. Temperature ranged from 27.2°C to 48.7°C, salinity from 20 g L?1 to >140 g L?1, pH from 5.8 to 7.8, dissolved oxygen (DO) from 3.1 mg L?1 to 4.9 mg L?1, water depth from 10 cm to 75 cm and conductivity from 42.0 ms cm?1 to 176.6 ms cm?1. A bisexual population of Artemia franciscana is suggested. Observed cyst states included concave, biconcave, spherical and cracking cysts. This is the first to report on the occurrence of Artemia in Tanzania.  相似文献

This study explored the yield and economic benefits of African sharptooth catfish, Clarias gariepinus, and Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus polyculture, reared in earthen ponds for 270 days integrated with Chinese cabbage, Brassica rapa chinensis, farmed for 45 days to small‐scale farmers in Tanzania. An integrated aquaculture–agriculture (IAA) system involving fishes and vegetables resulted in three and 2.5 times higher net yield than the culture of fishes alone and farming of non‐integrated vegetables respectively. Vegetables irrigated with pond water resulted in 1.8 times higher net and annual yields than those irrigated with stream water. The practice of fish–vegetable integration and growing of vegetables irrigated with pond water produced 14 and 13 times higher net annual yield, respectively, than the culture of fishes alone. The integrated system produced 20 and 150 times more net returns compared with vegetables irrigated with pond and stream water respectively. Integrating fishes with vegetables resulted in significantly higher annual net cash flow than the farming of fishes and vegetables separately. The study revealed that integrating fishes with Brapa chinensis increases yields, income and food production to small‐scale farmers. Thus, small‐scale farmers can adopt IAA technology to meet the increasing demand of fish and vegetables, stabilize their incomes and diversify food production, consequently improving food security. These benefits will be realized by providing proper training in IAA technology and management skills to small‐scale farmers.  相似文献

Flow cytometric DNA analysis was used to study changes in nuclear DNA content induced by the gain or loss of chromosomes or chromosome arms in wheat-rye addition lines and in triticale. The amount of DNA present was determined by comparison with internal reference values obtained from euploid plants. The smallest difference in the DNA level which could be detected between aneuploid and euploid plants was 1.84%. Thus, it was possible to determine aneuploidy in all cases, except when very short telocentric rye chromosomes were added to wheat (addition line 1RS). The study has proved that flow cytometry is an efficient and simple way to discriminate between euploid and aneuploid plants in wheat and triticale.  相似文献
