The Anaerobic digestion model 1 (ADM1) framework can be used to predict fermentative hydrogen production, since the latter is directly related to the acidogenic stage of the anaerobic digestion process. In this study, the ADM1 model framework was used to simulate and predict the process of fermentative hydrogen production from the extractable sugars of sweet sorghum biomass. Kinetic parameters for sugars’ consumption and yield coefficients of acetic, propionic and butyric acid production were estimated using the experimental data obtained from the steady states of a CSTR. Batch experiments were used for kinetic parameter validation. Since the ADM1 does not account for metabolic products such as lactic acid and ethanol that are crucial during the fermentative hydrogen production process, the structure of the model was modified to include lactate and ethanol among the metabolites and to improve the predictions. The modified ADM1 simulated satisfactorily batch experiments although further modifications could be made in order to further improve the predictions for the hydrogenogenic process. 相似文献

Pumpkin seeds have been implicated in providing health benefits. However their antioxidant or anti-inflammatory activity of their extracts has never been studied. Therefore, four commercially available pumpkin seeds were treated with two different extraction methodologies in order to obtain fractions with different content. The extracts were screened for their antioxidant activity using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay and for their inhibitory activity against lipid peroxidation catalyzed by soybean lipoxygenase.Most extracts tested have demonstrated radical scavenging activity, which depends on their total phenolic content, with fractions rich in phenolics showing the strongest activity. On the other hand, the phenolic content of extracts does not determine their activity against lipoxygenase, as acetone and polar lipid fractions are its strongest inhibitors. The presence of molecules being able to scavenge radicals and inhibit lipoxygenase in pumpkin seeds may in part explain the health benefits attributed to them. 相似文献

Oleuropein Inhibits LDL Oxidation Induced by Cooking Oil Frying By-products and Platelet Aggregation Induced by Platelet-Activating Factor 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Oleuropein, a polyphenolic glucoside, constituent of olive fruit and oil, has been previously shown to exhibit, in vitro, potent properties as a biological antioxidant. In the present paper, two new properties are demonstrated in vitro as well, concerning its vascular protection activity, against the atheromatic lesion formation and its blood antithrombotic effect. Firstly, it was found that the oxidation of low-density lipoproteins (LDL), induced by different quantities of total polar materials (TPM), was inhibited by 10 μ M (final concentration) of oleuropein, revealing approx. 50% protection. Secondly, platelet-rich human plasma aggregation, induced by either the platelet-activating factor or adenosine diphospate or arachidonic acid, was inhibited by oleuropein. The 10 μ M (final concentration) of oleuropein was proven to be the most effective among the tested concentrations against LDL oxidation, while an IC50=0.41 mM was calculated for its inhibitory activity against platelet aggregation induced by 0.7 μ M platelet-activating factor. 相似文献

The aim of the present study was to assess the influence of substrate concentration on the fermentative hydrogen production from sweet sorghum extract, in a continuous stirred tank bioreactor. The reactor was operated at a Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) of 12 h and carbohydrate concentrations ranging from 9.89 to 20.99 g/L, in glucose equivalents. The maximum hydrogen production rate and yield were obtained at the concentration of 17.50 g carbohydrates/L and were 2.93 ± 0.09 L H2/L reactor/d and 0.74 ± 0.02 mol H2/mol glucose consumed, corresponding to 8.81 ± 0.02 L H2/kg sweet sorghum, respectively. The main metabolic product at all steady states was butyric acid, while ethanol production was high at high substrate concentrations. The experiments showed that hydrogen productivity depends significantly on the initial carbohydrate concentration, which also influences the distribution of the metabolic products. 相似文献

A simple and precise method is described for the measurement of platelet-activating factor (PAF) in blood and urine. The method
involves the isolation of PAF from blood samples by two successive steps. In the first step, blood proteins are precipitated
with ethanol and the “free” PAF, i.e. the PAF which is extractable with ethanol, is recovered. In the second step, “bound”
PAF, i.e., PAF not extractable with ethanol, is extracted from the protein precipitate with chloroform/methanol/water. The
extraction of PAF from urine samples requires only the ethanol extraction step. “Free” and “bound” PAF are then each fractionated
by silicic acid column chromatography, and the methanol/water eluent containing PAF is then further fractionated by high-performance
liquid chromatography using an isocratic solvent system of acetonitrile/methanol/water. PAF is then quantitated by measuring
its ability to induce platelet aggregation in an aggregometer. Application of the method to blood and urine samples from twenty-three
healthy volunteers revealed PAF levels in blood of 140–480 pg/mL (630–254.4 pg “free” PAF/mL and 64–225.6 pg “bound” PAF/mL),
and of 1.2–4.0 pg PAF/mL in urine. The method overcomes various technical problems and was shown to be very precise. It should
prove useful for monitoring PAF levels in various disease conditions. 相似文献

Presents the results from the 1st empirical study on domestic violence in Greece. Surveys containing questions about domestic violence were obtained from 676 students in a social psychology class (80% between the ages of 25 and 55 yrs). 230 Ss reported that they have been exposed to or had been victims of domestic violence. Lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Lp-PLA2 activity is positively associated with male sex, Caucasian race, the presence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, but it is negatively associated with high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol. Associations with other cardiometabolic risk factors, inflammation markers, and lifestyle factors are few or inconsistent. We investigated potential determinants of Lp-PLA2 activity among both nonmodifiable and modifiable CVD risk factors in a middle-aged Greek cohort without overt CVD. Two hundred eighty four subjects (159 men, 53 ± 9 years and 125 women 52 ± 9 years) participated in a cross-sectional study carried out during 2011–2012 in Athens, Attica. Cardiometabolic risk factors, inflammation markers, lifestyle factors, and Lp-PLA2 activity were evaluated with established methods. The American Heart Association/National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (AHA/NHLBI) criteria were used to define MetS. Lp-PLA2 activity was not associated with MetS, but was associated with MetS components, markers of liver function, and macronutrient intake. Increased total energy intake was associated with increased Lp-PLA2 activity (odds ratio, 95% confidence interval: 1.07, 1.01–1.14 and 1.10, 1.03–1.16 for the 4th and 3rd quartiles, respectively, compared to the 1st quartile) after adjustments for sex, pack-years of smoking, LDL-cholesterol, and statin treatment. Adiponectin tended to be inversely associated with Lp-PLA2 activity (0.91, 0.82–1.00, and 4th versus 1st quartile). Our results suggested that total energy intake and adiponectin levels are potential determinants of Lp-PLA2 activity. 相似文献
