Smart phones and interactive reports leave traffic in the rearview mirror

To convey the dynamic information related to traffic conditions in various parts of a city, we propose an environment utilizing the technology of smart phones to provide information anywhere and anytime. Called ";The Interactive Traffic Beat Project,"; it uses a Web-based service to deliver this information to people through their cell phones at the right time so that valuable time can be saved and the chaos on the roads can be managed.     

The effect of adding devulcanized rubber on the thermomechanical properties of recycled polypropylene

This work aims to investigate the effect of adding vulcanized or partially devulcanized rubbers on recycled polypropylene (PPr), considering thermomechanical and morphological properties. The study proposes to better understand how structural changes underwent by rubber (after the devulcanization) contributed to improving the mechanical properties of the PPr. The PPr/rubber blends were prepared by a co-rotating twin-screw extruder and then were injected. The blends composed of the most devulcanized rubbers by microwaves with refined microstructure showed higher values of elongation at break and toughness. Data showed that the devulcanization process applied to the rubber interfered positively in its adhesion to the PPr. Data from dynamic mechanical analysis and atomic force microscopy indicated that the most devulcanized rubbers presented an interface more connected to PPr. These chemical interactions possibly impacted the mechanical properties of the PPr. Moreover, dilatation processes favored the fracture mechanisms of the PPr when rubber was added to it.

BirdVis: visualizing and understanding bird populations

Birds are unrivaled windows into biotic processes at all levels and are proven indicators of ecological well-being. Understanding the determinants of species distributions and their dynamics is an important aspect of ecology and is critical for conservation and management. Through crowdsourcing, since 2002, the eBird project has been collecting bird observation records. These observations, together with local-scale environmental covariates such as climate, habitat, and vegetation phenology have been a valuable resource for a global community of educators, land managers, ornithologists, and conservation biologists. By associating environmental inputs with observed patterns of bird occurrence, predictive models have been developed that provide a statistical framework to harness available data for predicting species distributions and making inferences about species-habitat associations. Understanding these models, however, is challenging because they require scientists to quantify and compare multiscale spatialtemporal patterns. A large series of coordinated or sequential plots must be generated, individually programmed, and manually composed for analysis. This hampers the exploration and is a barrier to making the cross-species comparisons that are essential for coordinating conservation and extracting important ecological information. To address these limitations, as part of a collaboration among computer scientists, statisticians, biologists and ornithologists, we have developed BirdVis, an interactive visualization system that supports the analysis of spatio-temporal bird distribution models. BirdVis leverages visualization techniques and uses them in a novel way to better assist users in the exploration of interdependencies among model parameters. Furthermore, the system allows for comparative visualization through coordinated views, providing an intuitive interface to identify relevant correlations and patterns. We justify our design decisions and present case studies that show how BirdVis has helped scientists obtain new evidence for existing hypotheses, as well as formulate new hypotheses in their domain.     

Dr. Jekyll vis-à-vis Mr. Hyde: Personality variation between virtual and real worlds

Organizations use virtual-worlds to enhance group discussion; it allows an individual to decouple his or her rendered from actual behavior; resulting in others perceiving him or her to have two or more personalities. Building on self-regulation theory, we examined how satisfaction in the virtual-world was affected by these personality differences. A field study was conducted to attempt to understand this; it involved 297 students engaged in a virtual tutorial group using Second Life. We found that small variations in personality between the virtual and real world groups (such as being helpful, sociable, seeking recognition, or submissive) could lead to greater satisfaction of the discussion.     

VisComplete: automating suggestions for visualization pipelines

Building visualization and analysis pipelines is a large hurdle in the adoption of visualization and workflow systems by domain scientists. In this paper, we propose techniques to help users construct pipelines by consensus--automatically suggesting completions based on a database of previously created pipelines. In particular, we compute correspondences between existing pipeline subgraphs from the database, and use these to predict sets of likely pipeline additions to a given partial pipeline. By presenting these predictions in a carefully designed interface, users can create visualizations and other data products more efficiently because they can augment their normal work patterns with the suggested completions. We present an implementation of our technique in a publicly-available, open-source scientific workflow system and demonstrate efficiency gains in real-world situations.     

Querying and creating visualizations by analogy

While there have been advances in visualization systems, particularly in multi-view visualizations and visual exploration, the process of building visualizations remains a major bottleneck in data exploration. We show that provenance metadata collected during the creation of pipelines can be reused to suggest similar content in related visualizations and guide semi-automated changes. We introduce the idea of query-by-example in the context of an ensemble of visualizations, and the use of analogies as first-class operations in a system to guide scalable interactions. We describe an implementation of these techniques in VisTrails, a publicly-available, open-source system.     

Academic trajectories of newcomer immigrant youth.

Immigration to the United States presents both challenges and opportunities that affect students' academic achievement. Using a 5-year longitudinal, mixed-methods approach, we identified varying academic trajectories of newcomer immigrant students from Central America, China, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and Mexico. Latent class growth curve analysis revealed that although some newcomer students performed at high or improving levels over time, others showed diminishing performance. Multinomial logistic regressions identified significant group differences in academic trajectories, particularly between the high-achieving youth and the other groups. In keeping with ecological–developmental and stage–environment fit theories, School Characteristics (school segregation rate, school poverty rate, and student perceptions of school violence), Family Characteristics (maternal education, parental employment, and household structure), and Individual Characteristics (academic English proficiency, academic engagement, psychological symptoms, gender, and 2 age-related risk factors, number of school transitions and being overaged for grade placement) were associated with different trajectories of academic performance. A series of case studies triangulate many of the quantitative findings as well as illuminate patterns that were not detected in the quantitative data. Thus, the mixed-methods approach sheds light on the cumulative developmental challenges that immigrant students face as they adjust to their new educational settings. Effect of cavosurface angle beveling on the exposure angle of enamel prisms in different cavity sizes

The quality of the micromechanical retention between the enamel prisms exposed through acid etching and adhesive system can be influenced by the relationship between the angle of the exposed enamel prisms and the external surface/restorative material. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine the influence of the enamel cavosurface beveling in different cavity sizes on the angle relation between enamel prisms and the restorative material. For this research, 30 human permanent molars were used and divided into three groups according the isthmus aperture of class I cavities (1/4, 1/3, and 1/2 of the intercuspal distance). Cavosurface angle beveling was performed in each tooth buccal or palatal/lingual side, and a resin composite restoration was placed. Each restored tooth was sectioned in buccal/palatal direction followed by analysis in scanning electron microscope. Means of the angles observed between enamel prisms and the restorative material were registered and statistically analyzed by Kruskal‐Wallis test. Results showed higher mean angle values for beveled groups when comparing with the values observed in the unbeveled margins (p < .05) regardless of the isthmus aperture, being 1/4 (beveled = 48.36°; unbeveled = 20.71°), 1/3 (beveled = 39.75°; unbeveled = 29.15°), and 1/2 (beveled = 37.02°; unbeveled = 26.34°). It was also observed that in some unbeveled cavities, there were the presence of laterally exposed enamel prisms (0°), mainly in more conservative cavities. It was concluded that the presence of higher angles values occurred in the samples with beveled margins, without presence of laterally exposed enamel prisms.
