BACKGROUND: Biological systems that show threshold phenomena are candidates for stochastic resonance as a mechanism to explain what appears to be biovariability. Stochastic resonance is the amplification of weak signals by "noise." OBJECTIVE: This review discusses the areas of contact dermatitis in which threshold events have been documented. The purpose is to point out the mechanism by which stochastic resonance may affect patch test results. METHODS: A literature review technique was used. RESULTS: The recent finding of a neurological influence on contract dermatitis provides a mechanism for stochastic resonance to affect patch test results. CONCLUSION: Stochastic resonance is likely to affect patch test results when more than one patch test result is positive.  相似文献

Gelatin is a very promising matrix material for in vitro cell culture and tissue engineering, e.g. due to its native RGD content. For the generation of medical soft tissue implants chemical modification of gelatin improves the mechanical properties of gelatin hydrogels and the viscous behavior of gelatin solutions for liquid handling. We present a systematic study on the influence of high degrees of methacrylation on the properties of gelatin solutions and photo-chemically crosslinked hydrogels. Changes from shear thinning to shear thickening behavior of gelatin solutions were observed depending on mass fraction and degree of methacrylation. Degrees of swelling of crosslinked hydrogels ranged from 194 to 770?% and storage moduli G′ from 368 to 5?kPa, comparable to various natural tissues including several types of cartilage. Crosslinked gels proofed to be cytocompatible according to extract testings based on DIN ISO 10933-5 and in contact with porcine chondrocytes.  相似文献

Rice bran is considered in Mexico as “waste”, useful only for feeds. As considerable amounts of oil are available in rice bran, it might be worthwhile to stabilize it and extract the edible oil before using it for feedstuffs. Precisely these oils are responsible for rice bran rapid deterioration, particularly in climatic conditions such as those prevalent in Mexico's tropical areas (high humidity and high temperature). This paper deals with the study of the effect of pH during extrusion of fresh rice bran in order to inactivate lipid‐breaking enzymes. Hydrochloric acid or calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2, were added at 0, 1, 5, 10% (dry basis), and moisture content of the bran samples was varied (20, 30, 40%, dry basis) in a 32 factorial design to corroborate its effect at acid and alkaline pH range. Free fatty acids (FFA) increase was the control variable. Extruded samples were stored at room temperature (between 20 and 28 °C) using a non‐extruded sample as control to assess the shelf life effects. Results indicate that in acid‐extruded samples, the increase in FFA concentration after 98 days was much less than in the unmodified‐pH or alkaline samples. The lowest FFA increase after 3 months of storage time was <10 mg FFA/g rice bran using extrusion with no water or chemicals added or using extrusion adding HCl, irrespective of the moisture content of rice bran.  相似文献

Reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions in the transport sector is a priority for Great Britain and other European countries as part of their agreements made in the Kyoto protocol and the Voluntary Agreement. To achieve these goals, it has been proposed to increase the market share of diesel vehicles which are more efficient than petrol ones. Based on partial approaches, previous research concluded that increasing the share of diesel vehicles will decrease CO2 emissions (see 1 and 18; Zervas, 2006). Unlike these approaches, I use an integral approach based on discrete choice models to analyse diesel vehicle penetration in a broader context of transport in Great Britain. I provide for the first time, empirical evidence which is in line with Bonilla's (2009) argument that only improvements in vehicle efficiency will not be enough to achieve their goals of mitigation of energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The model shows the technical limitations that the penetration of diesel vehicles faces and that a combination of improvements in public transportation and taxes on fuel prices is the most effective policy combination to reduce the total amount of energy consumption and CO2 emissions among the analysed dieselisation polices.  相似文献

Commonly used catalysts in industry are compositions of highly dispersed particles. Typical systems consist of precious metals or transition metal oxides like V2O5 on oxide supports, especially TiO2, Al2O3 and SiO2. Support and active compound show a different chemical and material behaviour. A very important influence of the support on the active compound is the formation of microstrains due to the different thermal expansion behaviour. On the surface of a stiff linear elastic support the active compound is certainly strain hindered. In order to monitor the development of strain hindrance and further effects, in situ experiments were carried out at temperature both in an X-ray and in a neutron powder diffractometer. The width of the reflexes indicated a strong influence of the thermal expansion mismatch on peak width. The strain hindrance creates mismatch stresses high enough to overcome the yield stress of V2O5. The Williamson–Hall plots showed both a particle size effect as well as a stress widening but the measurements were difficult because of the materials anisotropy. The TEM work showed again very fine particles which agrees with the X-ray measurements. The support effect may be seen as thermal stress induced formation of a mosaic structure in the active compound. Moreover, the peak width correlated with the catalytic activity. The low ordered regimes in the mosaic structure are acting as further active centres for the catalytic reaction.  相似文献

Trypanothione reductase (TR), a flavoprotein oxidoreductase central to the unique thiol-redox system that operates in trypanosomatid protozoa, has been proposed as a potential target for the chemotherapy of trypanosomatid infections. In this study, targeted gene replacement was used to obtain evidence that TR is an essential cellular component and that its physiological function is crucial for parasite survival. Precise replacement of the Leishmania donovani tryA gene encoding TR was only possible upon simultaneous expression of the tryA coding region from an episome; in its absence, attempted removal of the last tryA allele invariably led to the generation of an extra copy of tryA, seemingly as a result of selective chromosomal polysomy. Partial replacement mutants were drastically affected in their ability to survive inside cytokine-activated macrophages in a murine model of Leishmania infection. As no compensatory mechanism for the partial loss of TR activity was observed in these mutants and as it was not possible to obtain viable Leishmania devoid of TR catalytic activity, specific inhibitors of this enzyme are likely to be useful anti-leishmanial agents for chemotherapeutic use.  相似文献

Tropical roots and tubers (TRT) are important staple foods in the tropics. TRT are produced by small farmers and have received only limited attention. The objective of this paper was to evaluate nutritionally important carbohydrate fractions and proximal composition of cooked cassava (Manihot esculenta), cocoyam- or tannia- (Xantosoma sp) and yam (Dioscorea alata) grown in Costa Rica. Twenty boiled samples of each TRT were analyzed for proximal composition, following AOAC protocols. Carbohydrate fractions (dietary fiber, available and resistant starch) and alpha-amylolysis rate were assessed by enzymatic methods. All TRT analyzed consisted mainly of water and carbohydrates, representing moderate dietary fiber and energy sources. They show a low protein level and contain no fat. Moisture, protein, ashes and dietary fiber contents vary significantly (p<0.01) among the three species. In terms of their proximal composition, these locally grown TRT differ from TRTs cultivated in the South Pacific area, but appear similar to other Latin American varieties. In all samples most of the dietary fiber (84-88%) is insoluble; available starch ranges between 74 and 84% of the dry matter, whereas resistant starch content varied between 0.7 and 1.7%. Amylolysis rate was similar for cassava and cocoyam, whereas a significantly slower digestion (p<0.01) was recorded for yam. Compared to values reported in the literature for other starchy foods and to gelatinized potato starch, used as reference sample, the studied TRT showed intermediate amylolysis rates. It is concluded that consumption of these TRT may be promoted in Costa Rica and other countries with a similar nutritional situation.  相似文献
