Gigabit pulse position bistability in semiconductor lasers

The paper briefly reviews the major forms of optical bistability in active optical devices compatible for use in gigabit optical communication systems, and reports an entirely new optical bistability for the first time. Unlike previous devices, the two bistable states of the optical device are each a series of picosecond optical pulses at 1 GHz or greater repetition rates, and are distinguished by a half period temporal shift between their temporal positions in relation to a clock pulse. The bistable device is based on a gain switched semiconductor laser. Theoretical studies suggest 100-ps switching speeds might be achieved, and experimental results are reported indicating optically triggered switching times of 500 ps.     

Normality and impairment following profound early institutional deprivation: A longitudinal follow-up into early adolescence.

Longitudinal analyses on normal versus impaired functioning across 7 domains were conducted in children who had experienced profound institutional deprivation up to the age of 42 months and were adopted from Romania into U.K. families. Comparisons were made with noninstitutionalized children adopted from Romania and with nondeprived within-U.K. adoptees placed before the age of 6 months. Specifically, the validity of the assessment, the degree of continuity and change in levels of functioning from 6 to 11 years, and the factors in the pre- and postadoption environment accounting for heterogeneity in outcome were examined. Pervasive impairment was significantly raised in children experiencing institutional deprivation for ≥6 months of life, with a minority within this group showing no impairment. There was no additional significant effect of duration of deprivation beyond the 6-month cutoff, and few other predictors explained outcome. The pattern of normality/impairment was mainly established by 6 years of age, with considerable continuity at the individual level between 6 and 11 years. A hybrid formulation for the probe-to-patch attachment-mode currentfor rectangular microstrip antennas

We present a hybrid representation for the attachment-mode current existing on the surface of a coaxially fed rectangular microstrip patch antenna. The hybrid representation consists of a one- or two-term residue and an eigenfunction series which gives the attachment-mode current at all points on the patch surface, including the probe-to-patch junction. It is numerically demonstrated that the residue and eigenfunction series blend smoothly in the close vicinity of the Stokes region which includes the probe-to-patch junction. The Stokes region is a very narrow region over which the attachment-mode current changes rapidly. The residue and eigenfunction series are used outside and within this Stokes region, respectively. This hybrid representation can be used in either spectral- or space-domain techniques for a full-wave solution to the microstrip antenna problem. The residue series is obtained by using an equivalent contour integral representation of the infinite eigenfunction series, which subsequently reduces to the Watson transform under the assumption of a slightly lossy substrate. At or near the Stokes regions the residue series is inadequate, as it cannot model the rapidly varying junction currents there. Examination of the residue series shows that the attachment mode is a superposition of exponentially attenuated, leaky, surface-traveling modes. This hybrid representation is expected to provide the optimum trade-off between speed and accuracy for computations involving electrically large finite arrays

美国大学和学院，学生对教师教学进行有效性评估。不同大学对教学有不同要求和标准；美国学术界对教学评估体系利与弊展开过辩论，而学生和老师的背景特征可能引起偏见。美国学生对老师进行教学评估的体系，对中国高等教育教学可能有一定的他石意义，但是，评估体系的现实条件有差异，中国不应当照抄或照搬美国教学评估，尤其应该摒弃将教与学关系扭曲为买方和卖方关系的观念。取其精华而弃其糟粕，建立适应中国的教学评估体系才能提高高等教育质量。     

Unifying Functional User Interface Design Principles

ABSTRACT

Many designers and User Interface (UI) educators discuss principles to be followed when designing the functional aspects of a UI. However, many UI principles have been proposed, scattered in scientific papers and teaching books. Some principles are different, and many are somehow similar or overlapping with others. This makes it very difficult to comprehend where to pay attention to when designing a UI. In this paper, we perform a systematic literature review to first identify the most relevant authors in the domain of functional UI design principles. Focusing on the three most cited works of these authors, we extracted 257 principles. We next analyzed all these principles, unified their variants, and, considering their scientific influence, finally derived a shorter and core selection of 36 principles. This core selection provides educators and UI designers with a clear path to teach, evaluate, learn and improve the UI functional design.     

An investigation of phase transformation behavior in sputter-deposited PtMn thin films

Sputter-deposited, equiatomic PtMn thin films have application in giant magnetoresistive spin valves, tunneling magnetoresistive spin valves, and magnetic random access memory. However, the as-deposited films are found to be a disordered A1 phase in a paramagnetic state rather than an antiferromagnetic phase with L1₀ structure, which is needed for device operation. Therefore, a postannealing step is required to induce the phase transformation from the asdeposited A1 face-centered-cubic phase to the antiferromagnetic L1₀ phase. The A1 to L1₀ metastable transformation was studied by x-ray diffraction and differential-scanning calorimetry. An exothermic transformation enthalpy of −12.1 kJ/mol of atoms was determined. The transformation kinetics were simulated using the Johnson-Mehl-Avrami analysis.
