Risk management in safety critical areas

This paper examines the lessons to be learned from recent disasters. From these and other evidence it deduces good practice in managing risk in safety critical areas. It explains some methods which may be used to aid decision-making for implementing risk control measures. The paper uses examples drawn from the UK rail transport sector with specific reference to current BR practice.     

Materials for permanent magnets

Until the middle 50's, both magnetically soft and hard materials were produced mostly by melting, casting and hot manipulation. Powder techniques were being applied on a pilot plant scale only, but during the last two decades these have become predominant and in the future almost all permanent magnets will be produced by this route. The development of new compositions and processes is traced, with examples of applications, with emphasis on the impact which the latest rare earth cobalt or iron super energy magnets are having in this field. They are penetrating into existing markets and expanding into new ones not possible hitherto.

Stages in developing engineering projects within the water industry are reviewed, with particular reference to the construction of wastewater treatment plants by adopting a design and construct approach. This is compared with the involvement of consulting engineers and the more traditional practices. The effect on responsibilities and the influence of the approaches to the management, engineering and outcome of the project are considered.
