BANK LENDING TO MINORITY AND LOW-INCOME HOUSEHOLDS AND NEIGHBORHOODS: Do Community Reinvestment Agreements Make A Difference?

ABSTRACT: This article marks a new direction in research on the Community Development Act (CRA) by examining the outcomes of CRA agreements, comparing the mortgage and home improvement lending of banks with and without agreements. The analysis examines Home Mortgage Disclosure Act data for all the states and metropolitan areas with CRA agreements in effect and compares mortgage and lending to low-income and minority households and neighborhoods by banks with and without agreements and by banks with different types of agreements. Banks with CRA agreements appear to be more responsive than other banks to the credit needs of minority and low-income households and neighborhoods, especially when independent mortgage banks, which are not subject to the CRA, are removed from the analysis. Few significant differences, however, were found in the lending practices of banks with different types of agreements, including banks with negotiated and voluntary agreements.     

TOXICITY, MUTAGENICITY AND TERATOGENICITY OF BREVIANAMIDE, VIOMELLEIN AND XANTHOMEGNIN; SECONDARY METABOLITES OF PENICILLIUM VIRIDICATUM

The three major secondary metabolites of Penicillium viridicatum, brevianamide, xanthomegnin, and viomellein were tested for mutagenicity by the Salmonella/microsome test and for toxicity and teratogenicity by the chick embryo test. None were mutagenic. Viomellein was mildly toxic and teratogenic, xanthomegnin was the most toxic and was not a teratogen, and brevianamide was not toxic yet was the most teratogenic.

Chemical, Physical, and Sensory Properties of a Sweet Potato French-Fry Type Product During Frozen Storage

Chemical, physical, and sensory properties of a sweet potato Frenchfry type product were determined after 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12 months frozen storage. Analyses included measurements of dry matter, sugars, alcohol insoluble solids, carotene, vitamin C, color, texture and sensory panel scores for color, flavor and texture. Few changes were observed except for an appreciable loss (58%) in vitamin C and an apparent increase in carotene (27%). A partial drying treatment before freezing increased the rate of ascorbic acid loss. For the fried product, no appreciable storage-induced changes were noted in the sensory scores for color, flavor and texture thus indicating that the product had good stability in frozen storage.     

Combining Neural Network Forecasts on Wavelet-transformed Time Series

We discuss a simple strategy aimed at improving neural network prediction accuracy, based on the combination of predictions at varying resolution levels of the domain under investigation (here: time series). First, a wavelet transform is used to decompose the time series into varying scales of temporal resolution. The latter provides a sensible decomposition of the data so that the underlying temporal structures of the original time series become more tractable. Then, a dynamical recurrent neural netork is trained on each resolution scale with the temporal-recurrent backpropagation algorithm. By virtue of its internal dynamic, this general class of dynamic connections network approximates the underlying law governing each resolution level by a system of non-linear difference equations. The individual wavelet scale forecasts are afterwards recombined to form the current estimate. The predictive ability of this strategy is assessed with the sunspot series.     

Supercritical CO2 Extraction of β-Carotene from Sweet Potatoes

Using supercritical CO₂ to extract β-carotene there was approximately a five-fold or a three-fold increase in amount of carotenoids extracted from freeze-dried tissue relative to the amount extracted from oven-dried or fresh tissue, respectively. The most efficient conditions were at 48°C and 41.4 MPa. Of the total carotenoid content ～20% was inaccessible to supercritical CO₂. The HPLC carotenoid profile of sweet potatoes showed that the unextracted tissue contained 90%β-carotene, primarily as all-trans (ca. 99%). Supercritical CO₂ extracts contained up to 94%β-carotene. The isomer composition of β-carotene of supercritical extracts showed ～ 14% 13-cis and 11% 9-cis.

RETARDATES WERE, BUT ORGANIC SS WERE NOT, JUDGED AS PROCESS MORE THAN REACTIVE SCHIZOPHRENIC. REACTIVES WERE CALLED NORMAL MORE OFTEN THAN ORGANIC OR RETARDATE.
