DNA double-strand breaks are very genotoxic lesions that can result in chromosome aberrations. The current view is that DNA double-strand breaks are repaired most efficiently through homologous recombination in yeast and simple end-joining in mammalian cells. However, recent experiments reveal that both repair pathways are conserved from yeast to mammals, including humans. The challenge ahead is to put the different pieces of the jigsaw together into coherent mechanisms for both pathways and to determine their relative contributions to ionizing-radiation resistance and to the prevention of genetic instability and carcinogenesis. 相似文献

An experimental study is made of the time decay of activity of the CO–NO reaction on a Pd/Al2O3 looking at the effect on reaction order and apparent activation energy. Thirteen patients who developed restrictive subdeltoid adhesions after rotator cuff repair were identified. These patients underwent second-look arthroscopy and takedown of adhesions at an average of 37 weeks after their index surgery. Clinical findings include pain and restricted motion that does not yield to manipulation under anesthesia. Arthroscopic findings are subdeltoid adhesions and a chondral lesion (companion lesion) of the humeral head articular surface. Patients were reevaluated at 26 weeks after their release of adhesions. Prerelease and postrelease University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) scores average 14.8 and 30.1, respectively. Prerelease and postrelease UCLA pain scores averaged 2.6 and 7.7, respectively. Prerelease and postrelease range of motion was as follows: Flexion, 141/158; abduction, 123/141; internal rotation, 47/69; and external rotation, 53/74. The authors have proposed a theory to explain the clinical and arthroscopic findings in this subgroup of patients who are dissatisfied after rotator cuff repair. A study to evaluate the tensile mechanical properties of sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) and BPO4/SPEEK composite membranes has been carried out. It is aimed to give an assessment of these materials for applications in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The stress–strain response of the membranes was measured as a function of the degree of sulfonation (DS) and the filler–matrix ratio. In addition, the effects of immersion in water at various temperatures were explored in situ by means of a homemade testing chamber fitted to the tensile analyzer. The results indicate that the DS has an important influence on the final mechanical behavior of the membranes. The introduction of the BPO4 solid filler leads to deterioration in mechanical performance compared to unfilled SPEEK. A general picture of the microstructural features influencing the mechanical properties of SPEEK and BPO4/SPEEK membranes is proposed. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Short fibers and fine particles of β-SiC were obtained by pyrolysis of Colombian rice husk (RH). The synthesis of SiC was carried out in a gas furnace: a mathematical model was developed in order to design and build this equipment and the process was optimized using an experimental design that included variables such as temperature, pyrolysis time, type of catalyst, and process atmosphere. Silphinene sesquiterpenes are established chrysomelid antifeedants. In this work, nine silphinene analogs, 11-acetoxy-5-angeloyloxysilphinen-3-one (1), 11-acetoxy-5-tigloyloxysilphinen-3-one (2), 11-acetoxy-5-iso- butyryloxysilphinen-3-one (3), 11-hydroxy-5-angeloyloxysilphinen-3-one (4), 11,5-dihydroxysilphinen-3-one (5), 11,5-diacetoxysilphinen-3-one (6), 5,11-diisobutyryloxysilphinen-3-one (7), silphinen-3,5,11-trione (8), and O-methyl-5-epicantabrenolic acid methyl ester (10), and a presilphiperfolane sesquiterpene (9) were tested against several divergent insect species, including the lepidopteran Spodoptera littoralis, the chrysomelid Leptinotarsa decemlineata, and five aphid species, and their antifeedant effects were compared with those of picrotoxinin, a GABA-antagonist, and thymol, an allosteric modulator for insect GABA receptors. All insects tested responded to at least one silphinene analog and/or GABA antagonist. Compound 3 and thymol were effective antifeedants against all species tested except S. littoralis, with varying potencies according to their feeding ecologies.
