Most of the commonly used hydrological models do not account for the actual evapotranspiration (ETa) as a key contributor to water loss in semi-arid/arid regions. In this study, the HEC-HMS (Hydrologic Engineering Center Hydrologic Modeling System) model was calibrated, modified, and its performance in simulating runoff resulting from short-duration rainfall events was evaluated. The model modifications included integrating spatially distributed ETa, calculated using the surface energy balance system (SEBS), into the model. Evaluating the model’s performance in simulating runoff showed that the default HEC-HMS model underestimated the runoff with root mean squared error (RMSE) of 0.14 m3/s (R2?=?0.92) while incorporating SEBS ETa into the model reduced RMSE to 0.01 m3/s (R2?=?0.99). The integration of HECHMS and SEBS resulted in smaller and more realistic latent heat flux estimates translated into a lower water loss rate and a higher magnitude of runoff simulated by the HECHMS model. The difference between runoff simulations using the default and modified model translated into an average of 95,000 m3 runoff per rainfall event (equal to seasonal water requirement of ten-hectare winter wheat) that could be planned and triggered for agricultural purposes, flood harvesting, and groundwater recharge in the region. The effect of ETa on the simulated runoff volume is expected to be more pronounced during high evaporative demand periods, longer rainfall events, and larger catchments. The outcome of this study signifies the importance of implementing accurate estimates of evapotranspiration into a hydrological model.
Congestion is one of the most important challenges in optical networks. In a Passive Optical Network (PON), the Optical Line Terminal (OLT) is a bottleneck and congestion prone. In this paper, a framework is proposed with Forward Error Correction (FEC) at the IP layer combined with Weighted Round Robin (WRR) at the scheduling level to overcome packet-loss due to congestion in the OLT in order to achieve efficient video multicasting over PON. In the FEC scheme, Reed-Solomon (RS(n,k)) with erasure coding is used, where (n−k) erroneous symbols per n symbol blocks can be corrected. In our framework, an Internet Protocol TeleVision (IPTV) service provider uses the mentioned RS coding and generates redundant packets from regular IPTV packets in such a way that an Optical Network Unit (ONU) can recover lost packets from received packets, thus resulting in a better video quality. Simulation results show that using the proposed framework, an ONU can recover many lost packets and achieve better video quality under different traffic loads for its users. For instance, the proposed method can reduce packet loss rate by almost 55% and 10% under traffic load 0.9, respectively, compared with the Round Robin (RR) and WRR methods under symmetric traffic load. When High Receivers Queue (HRQ) traffic (i.e., traffic received by many users) is twice Low Receivers Queue (LRQ) traffic (i.e., traffic received by a small number of users), this reduction is almost 86% and 30% under traffic load 0.9. Finally, when LRQ traffic is twice HRQ traffic, the reduction in packet loss rate is almost 70% and 91% at traffic load 0.5. 相似文献
The temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficient of ethanol-soluble substances from ground cloves (particle size 250
μm) during extraction was estimated by fitting batch extraction data at several temperatures (27.8, 40, 50, and 60°C) to a
previously developed mass transfer model. The model was based on spherical geometry of particles. Nonlinear regression analysis
was used to develop an equation that describes the diffusivity as a function of temperature. The temperature dependence ofDA was of the Arrhenius type. 相似文献
Grafting of acrylamide (AAm) onto oil palm empty fruits bunch fiber using hydrogen peroxide as initiator and methyl acrylate as comonomer was investigated. The amount of comonomer needed to make grafting of acrylamide possible was determined. The percentage of poly(acrylamide) and the comonomer in the final graft copolymer was estimated by elemental analysis. Results obtained indicated that methyl acrylate facilitated the incorporation of acrylamide monomer onto OPEFB. The reactivity ratios for both monomers were determined by using Fineman–Ross plot. The effects of reaction temperature and period as well as amount of the initiator, solvent, monomer and comonomer on the percentage of grafting at fixed amount of comonomer (11 mmol) were studied. Maximum percentage of grafting was achieved when the amount of initiator and solvent 3.98×10−3 mol and 50 mL respectively. The optimum reaction temperature was 50 ○C and the reaction period was 90 min. Highest percentage of grafting was 232% when 25.6 mmol of acrylamide was used under these optimum conditions. The presence of functional group in the grafted polymer is characterized by infrared spectroscopy and the surface morphology is observed by scanning electron microscopy. Thermoanalytic investigation on OPEFB and OPEFB-g-PAAM were carried out to evaluate the thermal stability and respective activation energy of the materials. 相似文献
Haptic technologies and applications have received enormous attention in the last decade. The incorporation of haptic modality into multimedia applications adds excitement and enjoyment to an application. It also adds a more natural feel to multimedia applications, that otherwise would be limited to vision and audition, by engaging as well the user’s sense of touch, giving a more intrinsic feel essential for ambient intelligent applications. However, the improvement of an application’s Quality of Experience (QoE) by the addition of haptic feedback is still not completely understood. The research presented in this paper focuses on the effect of haptic feedback and what it potentially adds to the experience of the user as opposed to the traditional visual and auditory feedback. In essence, it investigates certain issues regarding stylus-based haptic education applications and haptic-enhanced entertainment videos. To this end, we used two haptic applications: the haptic handwriting learning tool to experiment with force feedback haptic interaction and the tactile YouTube application for tactile haptic feedback. In both applications, our analysis shows that the addition of haptic feedback will increase the QoE in the absence of fatigue or discomfort for this category of applications. This implies that the incorporation of haptic modality (both force feedback as well as tactile feedback) has positively contributed to the overall QoE for the users. 相似文献
A microarray machine offers the capacity to measure the expression levels of thousands of genes simultaneously. It is used
to collect information from tissue and cell samples regarding gene expression differences that could be useful for cancer
classification. However, the urgent problems in the use of gene expression data are the availability of a huge number of genes
relative to the small number of available samples, and the fact that many of the genes are not relevant to the classification.
It has been shown that selecting a small subset of genes can lead to improved accuracy in the classification. Hence, this
paper proposes a solution to the problems by using a multiobjective strategy in a genetic algorithm. This approach was tried
on two benchmark gene expression data sets. It obtained encouraging results on those data sets as compared with an approach
that used a single-objective strategy in a genetic algorithm.

Gene expression technology, namely microarrays, offers the ability to measure the expression levels of thousands of genes
simultaneously in biological organisms. Microarray data are expected to be of significant help in the development of an efficient
cancer diagnosis and classification platform. A major problem in these data is that the number of genes greatly exceeds the
number of tissue samples. These data also have noisy genes. It has been shown in literature reviews that selecting a small
subset of informative genes can lead to improved classification accuracy. Therefore, this paper aims to select a small subset
of informative genes that are most relevant for cancer classification. To achieve this aim, an approach using two hybrid methods
has been proposed. This approach is assessed and evaluated on two well-known microarray data sets, showing competitive results.

Project-based learning is a student-centered comprehensive instructional approach where students collectively engage themselves in complex learning tasks. Recent advances in educational technologies have made student-centered learning in a technology rich environment both possible and feasible. This paper will report part of a larger study carried out at a school in the United States of America on the use ofconstructivism and technology in project-based learning. Data collection techniques included those typically associated with qualitative field research. In this paper, the technological infrastructure of the school and how technology is used in one of the project-based learning classes will be provided. Based on this study, some suggestions are also provided on how technology can be used in the context of other countries including in Malaysia. 相似文献

This article introduces a novel magnetic bead-based DNA extraction and purification device using active magnetic mixing approach.
Mixing and separation steps are performed using functionalised superparamagnetic beads suspended in cell lysis buffer in a
circular chamber that is sandwiched between two external magnetic coils. Non-uniform nature of magnetic field causes temporal
and spatial distribution of beads within the chamber. This process efficiently mixes the lysis buffer and whole blood in order
to extract DNA from target cells. Functionalized surface of the magnetic beads then attract the exposed DNA molecules. Finally,
DNA-attached magnetic beads are attracted to the bottom of the chamber by activating the bottom magnetic coil. DNA molecules
are extracted from magnetic beads by washing and re-suspension processes. In this study, a circular PMMA microchamber, 25 μL
in volume, 500 μm in depth and 8 mm in diameter was fabricated to purify DNA from spiked bacterial cell cultures into the
whole blood sample using Promega Magazorb DNA extraction kit. The lysis efficiency was evaluated using a panel of Gram-positive
(Bacillus subtilis) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) bacterial cells cultures into the blood sample to achieve approximately 100,000 copy levels inside the chip. Manufacturer’s
standard extraction protocol was modified to a more simplified process suitable for chip-based extraction. The lysis step
was performed using 5 min incubation at 56 °C followed by 5 min incubation at room temperature for binding process. Temperature
rise was generated and maintained by the same external magnetic coils used for active mixing. The yield/purity and recovery
levels of the extracted DNA were evaluated using quantitative UV spectrophotometer and real-time PCR assay, respectively.
Real-time PCR results indicated efficient chip-based bacterial DNA extraction using modified extraction protocol comparable
to the standard bench-top extraction process. 相似文献
