Frequency and temperature dependence of electrical properties of barium and gadolinium substituted SrBi<Subscript>2</Subscript>Nb<Subscript>2</Subscript>O<Subscript>9</Subscript> ceramics

Barium strontium gadolinium bismuth niobate (Ba_0.1Sr_0.81Gd_0.06Bi₂Nb₂O₉, BSGBN) ceramics were prepared by using the conventional solid-state reaction method. The dielectric permittivity, modulus and impedance spectroscopy studies on BSGBN were investigated in the frequency range, 45 Hz–5 MHz and in the temperature range from room temperature (RT) to 570 °C. The dielectric anomaly with a broad peak was observed at 470 °C. Simultaneous substitution of Ba²⁺ and Gd³⁺ increases the transition temperature of SrBi₂Nb₂O₉ (SBN) from 392 to 470 °C. XRD studies in BSGBN revealed an orthorhombic structure with lattice parameters a = 5.4959 Å, b/a = 1.000, c = 25.0954 Å. Impedance and modulus plots were used as tools to analyse the sample behaviour as a function of frequency. Cole-Cole plots showed a non-Debye relaxation. Also, dc and ac conductivity measurements were performed on BSGBN. The electric impedance which describes the dielectric relaxation behaviour is fitted to the Kohlrausch exponential function. Near the phase transition temperature, a stretched exponential parameter β indicating the degree of distribution of the relaxation time has a small value.     

Serial cytological assay of micronucleus induction: a new tool to predict human cancer radiosensitivity

The role of the propeptide sequence and a disulfide bridge between sites 1 and 122 in chymotrypsin has been examined by comparing enzyme activities of wild-type and mutant enzymes. The kinetic constants of mutants devoid of the Cys1-Cys122 disulfide-linked propeptide show that this linkage is not important either for activity or substrate specificity. However this linkage appears to be the major factor in keeping the zymogen stable against non-specific activation. A comparison of zymogen stabilities showed that the trypsinogen propeptide is ten times more effective than the chymotrypsinogen propeptide in preventing non-specific zymogen activation during heterologous expression and secretion from yeast. This feature can also be transferred in trans to chymotrypsinogen; i.e. the chymotrypsin trypsin propeptide chimera forms a stable zymogen.     

Exposure to enriched environment improves spatial learning performances and enhances cell density but not choline acetyltransferase activity in the hippocampus of ventral subicular-lesioned rats.

The authors demonstrated the efficacy of enriched housing conditions in promoting the behavioral recovery and neuronal survival following subicular lesion in rats. Chemical lesioning of the ventral subiculum impaired the spatial learning performances in rats. The lesion also induced a significant degree of neurodegeneration in the CA1 and CA3 areas of the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex. Exposure to enriched housing conditions improved the behavioral performance and partially attenuated the neurodegeneration in the hippocampus. The choline acetyl transferase (ChAT) activity in the hippocampus remained unchanged following ventral subicular lesion and also following exposure to an enriched environment. The study implicates the effectiveness of activity-dependent neuronal plasticity induced by environmental enrichment in adulthood following brain insult. A new algorithm for 2-D DOA estimation

In this paper we present a new algorithm to estimate the 2-D direction of arrival (DOA) of narrowband sources lying in the far field of the array. The array consists of matched co-directional triplets, and can be considered as an extension of the 1-D ESPRIT scenario to 2-D. The proposed approach is simple and direct and does not require a search procedure or initialization. Existing algorithms require a search to match the correct elevation and azimuth angles and are computationally more expensive. This technique automatically pairs the azimuth and elevation angles by marking them. The computational complexity is twice that of 1-D ESPRIT. Simulation results and comparisons with other existing algorithms are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed technique.     

Development and optimization of fish‐fortified instant noodles using response surface methodology

Proper and sensible formulation of ingredients in noodles facilitates its calorie cut down thus making it healthier. Fish being a source of cheap and quality protein can serve in the fortification of noodles. Hence, a study was done to formulate and develop fish noodles from Nemipterus japonicus. D‐optimal mixture experimental design with 15 runs was formulated to optimise the different levels of ingredients for noodles. Influence of different ingredients, viz. fish mince, wheat and refined wheat flour (maida) and potato starch, on the physical, cooking and sensory properties of fish noodles was evaluated. The protein content of noodles increased with increase in the fish mince incorporation. Water absorption capacity (WAC) was found to be directly related to the potato starch concentration. Positive correlation was observed between noodle protein content and cooking time. Desirability function scores revealed a noodle combination of 45% fish mince, 47% wheat: maida (1:1) mix and 8% potato starch as optimum.     

Single-Step Synthesis of Chemically Cross-Linked Polysilastyrene and Its Conversion to β-Silicon Carbide

A new method for chemically cross-linking polysilastyrene using divinylbenzene as the cross-linking agent is reported. The procedure involves a single-step synthesis using the alkali-metal sodium to promote the polymerization of dimethyldichlorsilane in the presence of the comonomers phenylmethyldichlorosilane and divinylbenzene. The cross-linked polymer can be readily converted to β-SiC on pyrolysis at 1500°C. The β-SiC obtained by this procedure is nanocrystalline and has a grain-size distribution of 8–20 nm.
