Transport properties of polyphenylquinoxalines

The correlation between chemical structure and gas transport properties is considered for a new class of membrane materials based on structurally similar polyphenylquinoxalines that are characterized by different numbers of flexible-O-ether bonds in the repeating unit and different chain rigidities. Permeability, diffusion, and solubility coefficients have been estimated for the gases H₂, He, O₂, N₂, CO, CO₂, and CH₄; separation factors for various gas pairs have been determined. For the materials with a similar level of cohesive energy density, which characterizes interchain interactions, permeability decreases with a decrease in chain rigidity, whereas selectivity of gas separation increases.     

Relations for extrema of the work of aggregation in micellar solutions

Exact relations for the dependence of the positions of extrema of the aggregation work on the aggregation number axis on the surfactant monomer concentration are found for a dilute micellar solution. Relations for the half-widths of the vicinities of the extrema of the aggregation work are determined also. These half-widths are determined by the condition that, within the boundaries of their values, the aggregation work deviates from its extreme values by a thermal unit. The relations derived are illustrated by calculations based on the droplet and quasi-droplet models of spherical aggregates of nonionic surfactant. Some important applications of the obtained results to the theory of relaxation in micellar solutions are considered.     

Hydrolytic degradation and thermal stability of poly(naphthylimides) based on naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic dianhydride and bis(naphthalic anhydrides)

The molecular properties of a number of new poly(naphthylimides) derived from naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic dianhydride and bis(naphthalic anhydrides) have been studied. On the basis of hydrodynamic studies of the polymers at various stages of their thermal degradation in 96% H₂SO₄ and thermogravimetric measurements, the hydrolytic stability and thermooxidative resistance of the polymers have been compared. A correlation between the experimental data and the chemical structure of molecular chains has been established.     

Achievements in the field of proton-conductive portion electrolyte membranes

The 2000–2006 achievements in the field of synthesis, property examination, and application of proton-exchange membranes are reviewed on the basis of more than 120 papers.     

Synthesis and crystal structure of 1,3,5-tris [4-(phenylethynyl)phenyl]benzene

The crystal structure of 1,3,5-tris[4-(phenylethynyl)phenyl]benzene (1) has been investigated. Compound1 represents a model of the repeating unit of the most typical polyphenylene, which contains 1,3,5-trisubstituted benzene rings (chain centers) and acetylenic groups (complex-forming and cross-linking centers) in the main chain. The acetylene groups of neighboring molecules have a tendency to close mutual arrangement, which is favorable for their topochemical interaction. However, the relative conformational rigidity of molecules1 restricts not only the possibility of the optimal adjustment of the reactive sites of neighboring molecules to one another, but also hampers the close packing of molecules in the crystal, which contains channels filled by the solvent molecules (chloroform).Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. X-ray crystallographic investigation of the adduct of 1-demethylamino-2-(4-bromophenyl-2H-isoindole with N-phenylmalemide

Investigation of the chemical heterogeneity of polyphenylenes using the condensation of methyl aryl ketones as a model reaction

The chemical heterogeneity of polyphenylenes obtained by trimerization poiycycio-condensation of acetylaromatic compounds has been investigated by GLC-MS analysis of the products of trimerization cyclocondensation of acetophenone. The mechanism for the formation of side products of the reaction is discussed. The presence of dypnone fragments in the polyphenylene structure results in a decrease in the thermal stability of these polymers.Deceased March, 1993.Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. Untersuchungen zum Mechanismus der Mechanochemischen Synthese von Verbindungen aus dem System SnS mit Hilfe des Mössbauer-Effektes

By means of Mössbauer and X-ray structural investigation it was shown that the compounds Sn₃S₄ and Sn₂S₃ can be synthesized mechanochemically. The influence of an inert additive on the explosive character of the mechanochemical synthesis of tin sulfides was investigated. A transition from the explosive way of synthesis to the nonexplosive one upon adding great quantities of inert material was observed. A mechanism explaining this phenomenon was suggested. The initiation of a high-temperature synthesis reaction by the heat effect of a mechanochemical explosive reaction was observed for the first time.     

Synthesis and Crystal Structure of 5-Amino-4-cyano-8-isobutyl-7-isopropyl-6-thiocarbamoyl-2-azabicyclo[2.2.2]oct-5-en-3-thione

5-Amino-4-cyano-8-isobutyl-7-isopropyl-6-thiocarbamoyl-2-azabicyclo[2.2.2]oct-5-en-3-thione was synthesized by the condensation of isovaleryl aldehyde with cyanothioacetamide. The structure of the product was established by X-ray crystallography.
