Plasma effects and the modulation of white light spectra in the propagation of ultrashort, high-power laser pulses in barium fluoride

We report the results of a study of white light generation in a 7.5 cm long crystal of a high band-gap material, barium fluoride, using ultrashort (<42 fs) laser pulses over a range of values of incident laser power that extend up to more than three orders of magnitude larger than the critical power for self-focusing (P_cr). We explore white light generation and the intensity and spectral distributions within filaments that are formed as a result of the interplay of self-focusing and plasma-induced defocusing. The onset of plasma effects occurs at power levels in excess of 7 GW for ultrashort pulses in BaF₂. For incident power levels that are three orders of magnitude larger than the critical power, blue-shifting of the incident laser wavelength is observed in addition to asymmetric continuum generation. The blue shift enables us to estimate the temporal variation of the electron density in the plasma that is generated within the BaF₂ crystal. Measurement of two-photon absorption cross-section in organic molecular salt with linear and circular polarized radiation

We report on the investigation of two-photon absorption (TPA) in 4-Diethylamino-N-Methyl-4-Stilbazolium Tosylate (DEST) with 40 picosecond, 1064 nm linear and circular polarization laser radiation. The TPA cross-section ₂ measured is larger for linear polarized radiation (948 GM) than that for the circular polarized radiation (840 GM). The large TPA cross-section of DEST facilitates highly directional and efficient TPA induced upconverted emission in the range of 590–640 nm even though the fluorescence efficiency of DEST is very low (0.5%). The net single pass efficiency of upconversion is 7%. PACS 42.65.-k; 42.70.Jk

Estimation of the scale parameter of a power law process using power law counts

Analogous to Kingman's Poisson Counts, power law counts are defined. Further, these are used to obtain the maximum likelihood estimator of the scale parameter of a power law process. Comparison of this estimator is done with those obtained by using other sampling schemes. Also, cost comparisons are done under the assumption of equal asymptotic variances under different sampling schemes.Work done while the author was with the Department of Statistics, University of Poona. White-light-induced fragmentation of methane

We experimentally probe molecular ionization and dissociation of methane molecules in the gas phase upon their irradiation by intense pulses of white light that spans the wavelength range 500-850 nm. White light pulses are generated upon irradiation of BK7 glass by 36-fs-long pulses of intense 820 nm laser light. Comparison is made of the molecular fragmentation patterns obtained using white light that is depolarized with those obtained using single-color (820 nm) light that is highly chirped. On the basis of such comparison, we make hitherto-unavailable estimates of the in situ intensity of white light pulses. Results obtained using white light also indicate that resonances apparently do not play any role in the ionization dynamics that ensue upon irradiation by intense, broadband light; neither are the dynamics affected by the polarization properties of the 820 nm light that is used to generate the white light.     

On the choice of initial conditions of difference schemes for parabolic equations

We study finite difference schemes to approximate the first initial-boundary value problem for linear second order parabolic equations and obtain some convergence rate estimates. When difference schemes are constructed for such problems, in the process of obtaining convergence rate estimates compatible with smoothness of the solution, various authors assume that the solution of the problem can be extended to the exterior of the domain of integration, preserving the Sobolev class. Our investigations show that this restriction can be removed if, instead of using the exact initial condition, we use certain approximations of the initial conditions. Image sequence inpainting: Towards numerical software for detection and removal of local missing data via motion estimation

Film restoration aims to remove or reduce various types of film and video defects in order to provide visual enhancements of image sequences. The automatic treatment of these defects is a challenge. Restoration is still performed by hand even if by using numerical techniques for retouching. This is a very intensive activity and great improvements, both in quality and in speed, can be obtained by using automatic or semiautomatic software.
