Syntheses, characterization and study of the use of cobalt (II) Schiff-base complexes as catalysts for the oxidation of styrene by molecular oxygen

Schiff-Base complexes of bis-5-phenylazosalicylaldehyde ethylenediimine and bis-5-phenylazosalicylaldehyde-O-phenylenediimine ligands with Co(II) (I and II) have been synthesized and characterized by their IR spectra and elemental analyses. These complexes catalyze the oxidation of styrene in the presence of dioxygen and excess pyridine. The effect of the reaction conditions on the oxidation of styrene was studied by varying solvent, nature and amount of the catalyst and substrate. The catalytic behavior of the studied complexes was shown to be dependent on the conditions applied. In all reactions, acetophenone and 1- phenylethanol were the only observed products.     

Highly Selective Ion-Sensitive Electrodes Based on Dibenzo-Crown Ethers Containing Functional Groups for the Determination of Potassium in Biological Fluids

The electrochemical properties of membranes based on dibenzo-crown ethers bearing hydroxyl and chloromethyl groups in polyether rings were studied. These substances were tested as membrane ionophores for ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) reversible to potassium ion. The developed ISEs were used for determining potassium in blood plasma samples. The generalized results of determining potassium in the blood of different patients with cardiovascular diseases revealed quantitative regularities that allowed the diseases to be diagnosed early.     

Aspect-ratio dependent oscillatory thermocapillary convection in the floating half zone

Non-Gravitational Effects with Density-Matching in Evaluating the Influence of Sedimentation on Colloidal Coagulation

The method of density matching between the solid and liquid phases is often adopted to effectively eliminate the effect of sedimentation of suspensions in studies on dynamic behaviour of a colloidal system. However, the associated changes in the solvent composition may bring side effects to the properties investigated and therefore might lead to a faulty conclusion if the relevant correction is not made. To illustrate the importance of this side effect, we present an example of the sedimentation influence on the coagulation rate of suspensions of 2μm （diameter） polystyrene. The liquid mixtures, in the proper proportions of water （H2O）, deuterium oxide （D2O） and methanol （MeOH） as the liquid phase, density-matched and unmatched experiments are performed. Besides the influence of viscosity, the presence of methanol in solvent media, used to enhance the sedimentation effect, causes significant changes （reduction） in rapid coagulation rates compared to that in pure water. Without the relevant corrections for those non-gravitational factors it seems that gravitational sedimentation would retard the coagulation. The magnitude of the contribution from the non-gravitational factor is quantitatively determined, making the relevant correction possible. After necessary the influence of the sedimentation on coagulation rates at corrections for all factors, our experiments show that the initial stage of the coagulation is not observable.     

Synthesis,characterization, electrochemical behaviour and X-ray crystal structures of nickel(II) complexes with a N2O4 donor set macrocyclic Schiff base ligand

Two nickel(II) complexes of [1 + 1] macrocyclic Schiff base ligand (L) have been prepared by cyclocondensation reactions between 1,3-diamino-2-propanol and 2-[3-(2-formylphenoxy)-2-hydroxypropoxy] benzaldehyde, using NiX₂ (X = Br, and I) salts as template agents, and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, molar conductivity and electronic spectra in both solid and solution states. The single-crystal X-ray diffractions of the complexes are also reported that contain nickel(II) ion in a distorted octahedral geometry coordination of N₂O₃X (X = Br, I and NO₃). In all complexes the ligand behaves as a pentadentate ligand. Cyclic voltammetric studies of nickel(II) complexes indicate a quasi-reversible redox wave in the negative potential range.
