Sustainability challenges rarely align with the conventional boundaries of our disciplines, institutions and means of communication. To address these challenges amid real-world complexity, we need to think holistically and collaborate across disciplines. In this paper, we synthesise three themes: (1) more integrated conceptual frameworks; (2) digital visual communication which provides fluid expression of complex ideas and perceptions; and (3) online networks which can empower sustainability initiatives and communicate them across social and institutional barriers at a global scale. Each of these tools can help to overcome persistent barriers to sustainability. When used together, they provide a strategic basis for the design of digital collaboration platforms for addressing sustainability challenges. Using design thinking, we developed a Synergy Map which identifies relationships among a number of barriers to sustainability and conceptual and digital tools which help to address them. The Map identifies the potential for synthesising these tools into effective digital artefacts. We provide several examples and identify characteristics of particular value for overcoming barriers to sustainability. Combining new theoretical developments in sustainability sciences with recent advances in communication and networking technologies offers substantial potential for advancing sustainability on multiple fronts.  相似文献

Design disciplines have a long history of creating well-integrated solutions to challenges which are complex, uncertain and contested by multiple stakeholders. Society faces similar challenges in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals, so design methods hold much potential. While principles of good design are well established, there has been limited integration of design thinking with sustainability science. To advance this integration, we examine the process of designing MetaMAP: an interactive graphic tool for collaborating to understand social–ecological systems and design well-integrated solutions. MetaMAP was created using Research through Design methods which integrate creative and scientific thinking. By applying design thinking, researchers and practitioners from different backgrounds undertook multiple cycles of problem framing, solution development, testing and reflection. The testing was highly collaborative involving over 150 people from diverse disciplines in workshops, case studies, interviews and critique. Reflecting on this process, we discuss design principles and opportunities for integrating design thinking with sustainability science to help achieve Sustainable Development Goals.  相似文献

Anthropogenic effects such as contamination affect the genetic structure of populations. This study examined the temporal and geographical patterns of genetic diversity among populations of the benthic crustacean amphipod Melita plumulosa in the Parramatta River (Sydney, Australia), following an industrial chemical spill. The spill of an acrylate/methacrylate co-polymer in naphtha solvent occurred in July 2006. M. plumulosa were sampled temporally between December 2006 and November 2009 and spatially in November 2009. Genetic variation was examined at the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I locus. Notably, nucleotide diversity was low and Tajima’s D was significantly negative amongst amphipods collected immediately downstream from the spill for 10 months. We hypothesize that the spill had a significant localized effect on the genetic diversity of M. plumulosa. Alternate explanations include an alternate and unknown toxicant or a localized sampling bias. Future proposed studies will dissect these alternatives.  相似文献

To examine the link between corn agriculture and the observed decline of the endangered southern bell frog (SBF), the effects of two corn crop pesticides on larval growth and development were investigated. Tadpoles were exposed to terbufos sulfone (10 μg/L), a major breakdown product of the insecticide terbufos, and the herbicide atrazine (25 μg/L) individually and as a mixture until the completion of metamorphosis. Atrazine did not interact synergistically with terbufos sulfone or result in significant effects on growth and development alone, although there was some indication of accelerated metamorphosis in the pilot study. Terbufos sulfone alone and as a mixture (terbufos/atrazine) significantly slowed larval development and ultimately delayed metamorphosis. The observed developmental effects from an environmentally relevant concentration of terbufos sulfone indicates a risk posed by this persistent degradation product to the endangered SBF, which breeds and develops in the rice bays adjacent to corn fields treated with pesticides.  相似文献

Stable carbon isotope ratios (13C) of eelgrass Zostera marina and of kelp Laminaria longicruris showed considerable variation in time and space. The isotopic composition of Z. marina varied seasonally from a mean of-6 for leaves formed in June to a mean of-10 for leaves formed in February. The maximum range for individual leaves was from-5 to-11.4. Once a leaf was fully formed, its isotopic composition appeared not to change. In L. longicruris there was no clear seasonal pattern of variation, but in any given blade there was a spatial pattern of variation, with the thickened central band tending to be least negative and the margins most negative. In one blade the range was from-12 to-20. Since this range overlaps values that are found in various other macrophytes and in seston, the value of the stable carbon isotope ratio as a tracer in food webs involving macroalgae is questioned. For Z. marina, in which the values are seasonally predictable, the technique may be useful if interpreted with care. The most probable explanation of variation in the ratios is differential storage of biochemical components of different isotopic compostion.  相似文献

Daytime observations on the isopods Idotea phosphorea and I. baltica and the amphipod Gammarus oceanicus held in laboratory microcosms showed that I. phosphorea and G. oceanicus spent 45% and 30% respectively, of their active time feeding on dead, intact eelgrass leaves which had been recently released from plants. I. baltica spent 41% of its active time consuming intact green leaves. The shredding of intact dead leaves by I. phosphorea and G. oceanicus resulted in production of small detrital particles which were liberated from the faeces of the invertebrates and this type of feeding led to the breakdown of whole leaves. Field experiments which separated the effects of shredding by invertebrates and grinding by waves and ice on the loss of weight from leaf packs showed that relative to controls isopods significantly increased weight loss from dead leaves. Loss of weight from leaf packs exposed to both biotic and physical shredding forces was not significantly different from that found on those exposed only to shredding by isopods. However, trends in the data indicated that fragmentation of whole, dead leaves in the field probably is a result of the synergistic effects of shredding by invertebrates and physical factors, particularly ice grinding. The role played by invertebrates in fragmenting intact, dead leaves is discussed in the light of energy flow and nutrient cycling within seagrass systems.  相似文献

An intertidal and underwater survey of the zonation of seaweed in St. Margaret's Bay, NovaScotia, Canada showed 8 major zones as one proceeded away from shore: (1) Fucus and Ascophyllum; (2) Chorda with filamentous browns; (3) Chondrus crispus; (4) Zostera marina; (5) Laminaria digitata with L. longicrusis; (6) Laminaria longicruris; (7) L. longicruris with Agarum cribrosum; (8) Agarum cribrosum with Ptilota serrata. Zostera occurred at the same level as O. crispus but replaced it in sheltered water. Ascophyllum was more abundant in sheltered water. L. digitata was confined to the more exposed, steeper shore. The average horizontal extent of the seaweed zone was 369 m, and the greatest depth of significant amounts of seaweed 20 to 30 m. Laminaria longicruris contributed 36% of the total biomass, and Laminaria spp. and Agarum together constituted 83%, while intertidal seaweeds contributed less than 10% of the biomass. The estimated average total biomass per m of shore line was 1,481 kg fresh weight, 326 kg dry weight, 98 kg carbon, or 980x103 kcal. When averaged over the whole area of the bay, the corresponding figures were 1.38 kg/m2 fresh weight, 0.30 kg/m2 dry weight, 91 g/m2 carbon or 912 kcal/m2. Dry matter of Laminaria was 15 to 27% of fresh weight in blades, 10 to 12% in stipes. Nonionic surfactants are frequently incorporated into pesticide formulations, and are therefore a group of chemicals to which amphibians may be exposed in agricultural or urban landscapes. However, little is known about the effects of surfactant exposure in amphibians. Feeding stage tadpoles of Bufo marinus, Xenopus laevis and four species of Australian frogs (Crinia insignifera, Heleioporus eyrei, Limnodynastes dorsalis and Litoria moorei) were exposed to nonylphenol ethoxylate (NPE) and alcohol alkoxylate in static-renewal acute toxicity tests. All species exhibited nonspecific narcosis following exposure to both these surfactants. The 48-h EC50 values for NPE ranged between 1.1 mg/l (mild narcosis) and 12.1 mg/l (full narcosis). The 48-h EC50 values for alcohol alkoxylate ranged between 5.3 mg/l (mild narcosis) and 25.4 mg/l (full narcosis). Replicate acute toxicity tests with B. narinus exposed to NPE at 30 degrees C over 96 h indicated that the narcotic effects were not particularly time dependant. The mean 24, 48, 72, and 96-h EC50 (mild narcosis) values were 3.6, 3.7, 3.5 and 3.5 mg/l, respectively. The mean 24, 48, 72 and 96-h EC50 (full narcosis) were 4.0, 4.1, 4.2 and 4.0, respectively. Acute toxicity tests with B. marinus exposed to NPE at 30 degrees C under conditions of low dissolved oxygen (0.8-2.3 mg/l) produced a two to threefold increase in toxicity.  相似文献

Cadmium is a non-essential toxic metal that is able to bioaccumulate in both flora fauna and has the potential to biomagnify in some food chains. However, the form in which cadmium is presented to consumers can alter the bioavailability and possibly the internal distribution of assimilated Cd. Previous studies in our laboratory highlighted differences in Cd assimilation among isopods when they were provided with a plant-based food with either Cd biologically incorporated into plant tissue or superficially amended with ionic Cd(2+). Cd is known for its high affinity for sulphur ligands in cysteine residues which form the basis for metal-binding proteins such as metallothionein. This study compares Cd assimilation efficiency (AE) in Porcellio dilatatus fed with food amended with either cadmium cysteinate or cadmium nitrate in an examination of the influence of Cd speciation on metal bioavailability followed by an examination of the sub-cellular distribution using a centrifugal fractionation protocol. As hypothesized the AE of Cd among isopods fed with Cd(NO(3))(2) (64%, SE=5%) was higher than AE for isopods fed with Cd(Cys)(2) (20%, SE=3%). The sub-cellular distribution also depended on the Cd species provided. Those isopods fed Cd(Cys)(2) allocated significantly more Cd to the cell debris and organelles fractions at the expense of allocation to metal-rich granules (MRG). The significance of the difference in sub-cellular distribution with regard to toxicity is discussed. This paper demonstrates that the assimilation and internal detoxification of Cd is dependent on the chemical form of Cd presented to the isopod.  相似文献

Oxygen evolution and uptake by whole thalli of the large marine alga Laminaria longicruris de la Pylaie were measured for 24 h, once every 2 weeks for a year, using large chambers to incubate the plants on the sea bed. Diel rates of photosynthesis and respiration were calculated from these measurements and continuous light measurements were used to extrapolate the data between observation dates. The resulting estimates were combined with measurements of growth and carbon content to give an annual carbon budget for a typical mature plant. Annual net assimilation was 6.8 mgC per cm2 of frond surface (71 cal cm-2). Approximately 45% of this appeared in the production of new frond tissue, and a further 12% was accounted for by storage of carbon in mature frond tissue. About 8% was needed for stipe growth, and the remaining 35% was assumed to be lost as dissolved organic carbon. Diel net photosynthetic rates reached a maximum in June and July and were negative only in November, indicating an ability to produce a photosynthetic surplus throughout winter. In early winter the plants drew on stored reserves to supplement photosynthesis in providing carbon for growth, but from January onwards photosynthesis provided more than enough carbon for growth.  相似文献
