Qualitative GIS is a relatively new methodological approach for analyzing and visualizing qualitative data within a geographic context. Qualitative data can take many forms, including interviews, documents, photographs, and audio and video clips. Content analysis for example, is an effective qualitative method for analyzing text‐based data. We argue that basic concepts, (i.e. how to store data, data requirements, visualization techniques, and modes of analysis) within qualitative GIS have not been adequately defined, rendering difficult the replication of work performed and hindering the development of incremental knowledge in the field. Database management systems provide a means for storing, managing, and analyzing qualitative GIS data. A standardized and well‐designed open source database system provides a mechanism for qualitative GIS projects, ensuring consistency and project replication. Qualitative GIS data stored in a database allows for additional visualization options, such as geographic word clouds. To demonstrate the concepts we performed content analysis on Master Transportation Plans from Calgary and Montreal using SpatiaLite, an open source database system. We developed Structured Query Language (SQL) queries to generate and populate groups and theme tables within the SpatiaLite database. Samples used to estimate discrete choice models in geography and regional science are typically assumed to be simple random samples. This assumption is not always met with existing samples. Furthermore, data collection is usually less costly if a stratified sampling strategy is adopted. Existing sampling theory suggests that stratified sampling can affect the consistency of parameter estimates. In the present paper cluster analysis of 2-month air mass back-trajectories for three contrasting fire and non-fire events is conducted (high, low, and zero burnt area). The large fire event displays an air mass history dissimilar to other events whereby a 39-day period of warm and dry chiefly northerly anticyclonic conditions is evident, before a week of warmer predominantly southwesterly cyclonic activity, immediately prior to ignition. The pressure level of these anticyclonic air masses is above 800 hPa for more than 75 % of the trajectory length; this region is above the principal moisture transport regime of 800 hPa altitude. Analysis of variance on the mean rate of change of potential temperature identified weak statistically significant differences between two air mass pairs regarding the large fire: anticyclonic and cyclonic air masses in both cases (p?=?0.038 and p?=?0.020). Such regularity of type and occurrence, approach pressure levels and statistically significant differences are not evident for the small and non-fire event air masses. Such understanding is expected to permit appropriate steps to be undertaken including superior prediction and improved suppression strategy. 相似文献

Summary This paper examines the characteristics of the morning Urban Heat Island (UHI) in Athens basin, Greece. The study is performed
by using and analyzing mesoscale and synoptic data covering the period 1990–2001. The UHI was estimated using the 0600 Local
Time (LT) minimum temperature differences between rural and urban areas of the city. The analysis results in 7 UHI classes.
A strong UHI was found for the 1/3 of days. The specific meteorological characteristics (surface and upper air, cooling rate)
of each UHI class were revealed and examined. The spatial and temporal characteristics of the UHI were also identified.
The UHI is largest on nights with clear skies and low relative humidity. In all seasons the UHI switches on rapidly in afternoon.
During spring and summer, sea breeze commonly reduces and delays the UHI. Cases documenting the sensitivity and rapidity of
changes of the UHI to changes in classes (cloud cover, wind) are also presented. The cooling rate is higher in the urban area
under negative and lower under positive UHI conditions.
Mesoscale and macroscale phenomena were examined during the different UHI classes through a weather type scheme. It was emerged
that high UHI classes are associated with anticyclonic conditions or advection in the lower troposphere, while low UHI classes
are associated with strong northeasterly winds. Anticyclonic conditions which frequently occur in spring and early summer,
reduce or reverse the UHI to Urban Cooling Island. 相似文献

Numerical and experimental results of drying and wetting foam are presented. Foam can be wetted by wash water delivered on its top boundary, or drained by allowing the liquid to move downward in response to gravity. These processes are governed by nonlinear equations that in special cases accept exact solutions. Here we develop a numerical model that satisfies realistic boundary conditions. Numerical results are presented in conjunction with experiments conducted with coarsening foam. In addition, calculations were carried out modeling the wetting and draining of coarsened foam. From the simulations and experiments, coarsening bubbles were found responsible for accelerating drainage, or vice versa. 相似文献

An exact closed form solution is derived for the mechanical behaviour of a linear viscoelastic Burgers rock around an axisymmetric tunnel, supported by a linear elastic ring. Analytical formulae are provided for the displacement of the rock/lining interface and for the pressure exerted by the rock on the lining, taking into account the stiffness and its installation time. Results calculated from these formulae do validate the corresponding numerical results of a 2D finite differences code. Further, comparison to previous existing solutions for the same viscoelastic model indicates similarities and differences. A parametric study is performed to investigate the effect of the viscoelastic constants, the stiffness and installation time of the support. The derived closed form solution is used to construct the time-dependent Supported Ground Reaction Curves of the viscoelastic rock, i.e. the time contour plots on the convergence confinement diagram. The importance of the effect of the support on the restrained rock creep and the exerted pressure on the lining, during the design life of a structure, is examined. 相似文献

This study focusses on the estimation of seismic fragility curves for all common bridge types found in modern greek motorways.
At first a classification scheme is developed in order to classify the existing bridges into a sufficient number of classes.
A total of 11 representative bridge classes resulted, based on the type of piers, deck, and pier-to-deck connection. Then
an analytical methodology for deriving fragility curves is proposed and applied to the representative bridge models. This
procedure is based on pushover analysis of the entire bridge and definition of damage states in terms of parameters of the
bridge pushover curves. The procedure differentiates the way of defining damage according to the seismic energy dissipation
mechanism in each bridge, i.e. bridges with yielding piers of the column type and bridges with bearings (with or without seismic
links) and non-yielding piers of the wall type. The activation of the abutment-backfill system due to closure of the gap between
the deck and the abutments is also taken into account. The derived fragility curves are subjected to a first calibration against
empirical curves based on damage data from the US and Japan. 相似文献

This paper provides an empirical framework that applies spatial statistics methods to assess the relation between the change
in the geographical clustering of firms and the emergence of urban form. We contend that where firms locate and eventually
cluster give rise to the way commercial and industrial land uses are organized over space, which in turn defines the shape
of urban form. Accordingly, the objectives of our work are twofold: (1) to identify the extent and shape of firm clustering
and co-location at the intra-metropolitan level, and (2) examine how the change in the geographic clustering of different
industries contributes to decentralization and the evolution of urban form. Spatial statistics methods and tools were vital
and helped to fulfill these objectives.
