Private secondary schools in Indonesia: What is driving the demand?

Despite recent evidence that students in public schools significantly outperform their private school counterparts, private schooling continues to account for approximately 40% of secondary school enrolments in Indonesia. In an effort to explain this sustained demand, we combine analyses of PISA data with in-country interviews and school visits. Ultimately, we find that although government dependent private schools are underfunded with a high proportion of uncertified, underpaid teachers (with limited access to training and professional development), demand remains high due to their focus on religious training and education, as well as their ability to increase educational access for low-income families.

一类微分算子特征值的算法

采用Galerkin方法来构造适当的基函数,计算一类微分算子特征值的近似值,且可用第n次近似值来估计第n-1次近似值的精确度.随着n的增大,特征值λk的精确度逐步提高,只要适当选取n,就可以求得所需精确度的特征值的近似值,此算法具有一定的实用价值和理论价值.     

Pictures,patience, and practicalities: lessons learned from using photovoice in applied communication contexts

The unforeseen trials of arts-based research may suppress creative and innovative explorations. Photovoice, a visual method of investigation employing participatory photography, presents a host of apprehensions. Yet, photovoice is both a valid and rich methodology that can greatly expand the reach and scope of applied communication research. In this essay, we – three applied communication researchers – discuss the complexities of photovoice, highlighting areas of consideration that interested researchers should contemplate before utilizing this methodology. Briefly exploring three of our research studies and their varying topics (i.e. long-term cancer survivors, domestic violence organizational advocacy, male body culture), we discuss three broad areas of difficulty in photovoice research: analysis, control, and exposure. Despite the unique obstacles that photovoice presents, we argue that it, along with other forms of arts-based research, are profitable and definitely worth the challenge.     

Using LSA and text segmentation to improve automatic Chinese dialogue text summarization

Automatic Chinese text summarization for dialogue style is a relatively new research area. In this paper, Latent Semantic Analysis （LSA） is first used to extract semantic knowledge from a given document, all question paragraphs are identified, an automatic text segmentation approach analogous to Text＇filing is exploited to improve the precision of correlating question paragraphs and answer paragraphs, and finally some ＂important＂ sentences are extracted from the generic content and the question-answer pairs to generate a complete summary. Experimental results showed that our approach is highly efficient and improves significantly the coherence of the summary while not compromising informativeness.     

中国违宪审查制度的完善途径探讨

宪法是一个国家的根本大法,必须得到全体公民的普遍遵守,因而完善现有的违宪审查模式就显得十分紧迫.目前,世界上存在着四种违宪审查模式:司法机关审查模式、立法机关审查模式、专门机关审查模式和复合审查模式.我国的违宪审查制度目前还不够完善,存在着诸多缺陷,如何完善这一制度是值得每个公民关注的事情.     

基于内容分析的国内图书情报学研究方法创新研究——以共词分析方法为例

[目的/意义] 从微观层面对某种研究方法的期刊论文进行内容分析,从创新视角分析研究方法的研究成果,以期为研究图书情报学领域的论文研究方法的创新提供参考。[方法/过程] 对国内外相关研究成果梳理的基础上,提出一个研究方法创新的分类体系和分析流程。利用内容分析方法,选取国内181篇共词分析论文进行实证研究。[结果/结论] 研究发现：国内学者对共词方法改进性研究的成果相对较少,而在共词方法应用方面的研究较多。在共词分析改进性研究中,国内学者的创新性研究主要体现在共词分析某个过程的创新,原理性创新缺乏。在共词方法应用研究文献,国内学者在数据源、数据分析或数据可视化工具等方面有一定的创新。     

基于网络问答社区的话题识别与分析——以知乎“老年人”话题为例

[目的/意义]针对目前基于网络的话题识别与分析方法的局限性,提出针对网络问答社区的话题识别与分析方法,为此类网站的话题识别与分析提供参考。[方法/过程]以改进的中文分词技术为基础,构建网络问答社区的话题识别指标,通过线性加权方式计算权重,结合关键词提取方法确定话题关键词,对话题关注焦点进行提取,对分布情况进行测度。依据所提出的改进方法,以知乎网站为数据来源,从话题关键词、关键词分布以及热点子话题3个角度对"老年人"话题焦点进行识别与分析。[结果/结论]研究表明,该方法具有科学性和可行性,不仅拓展了社会问题的分析数据源,也为"积极开展应对人口老龄化行动"提供了决策依据。     

A learning-based method to detect and segment text from scene images

This paper proposes a learning-based method for text detection and text segmentation in natural scene images. First, the input image is decomposed into multiple connected-components (CCs) by Niblack clustering algorithm. Then all the CCs including text CCs and non-text CCs are verified on their text features by a 2-stage classification module, where most non-text CCs are discarded by an attentional cascade classifier and remaining CCs are further verified by an SVM. All the accepted CCs are output to result in text only binary image. Experiments with many images in different scenes showed satisfactory performance of our proposed method.
