Analysis of nitro-PAHs in diesel exhaust particulate extracts with multicolumn HPLC

Summary A method is described for the determination of nitrated polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs), in particular 1-nitropyrene, in diesel particulate extracts. The method employs a multidimensional HPLC (column switching) technique with final on-line peak identification by UV-VIS spectral comparison with standards. To achieve exceptional chromatographic selectivity for nitro-PAHs, a new pyrene butyric acid amide phase has been prepared which is capable of forming donor-acceptor complexes with them. With this technique it is possible to confirm the presence of 1-nitropyrene in the range 3–100 ng/mg on filter-collected diesel soot. The preparation of thick-film glass capillary columns

A detailed method for the routine preparation of glass capillary columns is presented. The method consists of coating a glass tube with quartz powder prior to pulling the tube into a capillary. The inner surface of the capillary consists of an even distribution of quartz particles fused to the walls. This surface has been found readily deactivated by standard procedures and ideal for the preparation of thick-film glass capillary columns. The method has been thoroughly tested in two independent laboratories to ensure that the procedures described are reproducible.     

On invexity-type nonlinear programming problems

In this paper, we propose a new class of nonlinear programing, called SFJ-invex programming. The optimality characterization shows that a problem is SFJ-invex if and only if a Fritz John point together with its multiplier, is a Fritz John saddle point of the problem. Under any constraint qualification assumption, a problem is SFJ-invex if and only if a Kuhn-Tucker point together with its multiplier is a Kuhn-Tucker saddle point of the problem. Furthermore, a generalization of the SFJ-invex, class is developed; the applications to (h, w731518n/xxlarge981.gif" alt="phiv" align="MIDDLE" BORDER="0">)-convex programming, particularly geometric programming, and to generalized fractional programming provide a relaxation in constraint qualification for differentiable problems to get saddle-point type optimality criteria.The author wishes to thank the referee for helpful comments.

Photoconductivity of erbium-doped germanium

We have applied the technique of Photo Thermal Ionization Spectroscopy (PTIS) to the study of an erbium-doped p-Ge epitaxial layer, grown by MBE on an undoped n-type germanium substrate. The Er-doped Ge layer shows continuum photoconductivity response in the far-infrared region extending from 70 cm^–1 to 900 cm^–1. This type of epitaxial Er-doped Ge layers is a potentially attractive system for photoconductivity detectors of far-infrared radiation. Below 900 cm^–1 three acceptor-like charged states can be distinguished with ionization energies of 9, 26.6 and w63457pq53223r2/xxlarge8805.gif" alt="ge" align="MIDDLE" BORDER="0">50 meV. Additionally, a study of the photoconductive response of the same sample for radiation from 1000 cm^–1 to 10000 cm^–1, i.e., for radiation energies well inside the forbidden gap to energies above it, shows a wealth of levels, some of which have previously been associated with erbium.On leave from: Instituto de Física, Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, Puebla, México     

Laser chemical processing of magnetic materials for recording-head application

A laser-induced thermochemical reaction has been used to etch single crystalline magnetic ferrite for industrial application to recording-head processing. Scanning focused Ar-ion laser irradiation to ferrite in flowing aqueous solutions of KOH or H₃PO₄ resulted in etch rates of 350–400 m/s with aspect ratios of up to 40. Metal-In-Gap (MIG) head structures with Sendust (FeAlSi) have been successfully fabricated using laser chemical processing. The MIG head fabricated by laser chemical processing showed better performance than that by conventional mechanical machining.Presented at LASERION '93, June 21–23, 1993 München (Germany)     

Possible candidates for discrete gamma rays linking superdeformed and yrast states in an odd nucleus:193Pb

The francium isotopes^200–202Fr were produced in the reaction³⁵Cl+¹⁷⁰Yb using bombarding energies of 4.9–5.3 MeV/nucleon. Fusion products were separated in-flight from the primary beam using a gas-filled recoil separator. An alpha line with the alpha particle energy and half-life of (7468±9) keV and (19 ₋₆ ⁺¹³ ) ms, respectively, was assigned to²⁰⁰Fr. Previously reported decay properties of^201,202Fr were confirmed. Constrained minima of nonlocal free energy functionals

We consider variational problems involving nonlocal free energy functionals that arise from Gibbs measures with Kac potentials and are related to the characterization of the optimal (i.e., typical) shape of an interface under given constraints on the magnetization profile.
